  • This paper proposes a method for predicting flexural strength of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high strength concrete beams. It includes an experimental test framework and associated numerical analyses. The experimental program includes flexural test results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high strength concrete beams with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume. Tensile softening characteristics play an important role in the structural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete. Tension softening modeling is carried out by using crack equation based on fictitious crack and inverse analysis in which load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship is considered. The comparison of moment-curvature curves of the numerical analysis results with the test results shows a reasonable agreement. Therefore, the numerical results confirms that good prediction of flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams can be achieved by employing the proposed method.

  • The hollow slab has advantages that its self-weight does not greatly increase notwithstanding the increase of its thickness and its flexural performance does not significantly degrade in comparison with general reinforced concrete slab. However, the utilization of the hollow slab is currently being underestimated in spite of structural system that enables economic design of building and construction of eco-friendly structure. the significant reasons for this situation is that the method of structural analysis and design for hollow slab is not generalized. In this study, to consider practical compressive zone of hollow slab, the equation for its flexural strength is proposed by the volume of compressive stress block according to neutral axis location in hollow section assumed. Existing estimation method of flexural strength of hollow slab considering only compressive zone above hollow part is evaluated as the most conservative method and the method estimating flexural strength by two alternative cross-section of hollow slab is evaluated as more practical method.

  • Recently, the prestressed unbonded concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the increment of tendon stress was derived by whole member behavior. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to evaluate the flexural behavior and to propose the equation of ultimate tendon stress by performing static flexural test according to span/depth, concrete compression strength, reinforcement ratio and the effect of existing bonded tendon. From experimental results, for cracking, yielding and ultimate load, the effect of reinforcement ratio was more effective than concrete compression strength, and the beams having high strength concrete had a good performance than having low concrete, but there was no difference between high strength and low strength. And as L/dp was larger, test beams had a long region of ductility. This means that unbonded tendon has a large contribution after reinforcement yielding. Especially, the equation of ACI-318 was not match with test results and had no correlations. After analysis of test results, the equation of ultimate unbonded tendon stress without slip was proposed, and the proposed equation was well matched with test results. So the proposed equation in this paper will be a effective basis for the evaluation of unbonded tendons without slip, analysis and design.

  • Deflections of Reinforced concrete structures must satisfy the permissible values and it is hard to predict the due to uncertainty of deflection of the reinforced concrete structures. Thus, many researchers have suggested a number of experimental equation of deflection against the uncertainty. In a specification, a procedure to evaluate flexure deflection using effective moment of inertia and moment-curvature relation is suggested. ACI offers a method using effective moment of inertia, which has been developed by Branson. Eurocode 2(EC2) suggests a procedure to evaluate deflection of reinforced concrete structure using moment-curvature relation. In this paper, a series of experiments were conducted on the singly reinforced concrete beams which have the same reinforcement ratio and different concrete strength. Therefore, the effect of the concrete strength on the deflection of the beams was analysed. The deflections obtained from the experiment were compared with the deflections calculated with ACI code and EC2.

  • This work presents experimental and numerical investigations on the flexural performances of composite deep-deck plate slabs. Seven deep-deck plate slab specimens with topping concrete were fabricated; the height of the topping slab as well as presence and type of shear connector were set as the main variables to perform bending experiments. The flexural behaviors of the specimens and composite behaviors of the deck plate and concrete were analyzed in detail. The contributions of the deck plate to the flexural stiffness and strength of the slab were identified through finite element (FE) analysis. FE analysis was carried out using the validated FE model by considering the varying bond strengths of the deck plates and concrete, thickness of the deck plate, and types and spacings of the shear connectors. Based on the results, the degree of composite of the deep-deck plate was examined, and a flexural strength equation for the composite deck plate slabs was proposed.

  • This paper concerns the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with ultra-high performance cementitious composites(UHPCC). It was investigated if the existing equations to estimate the flexural capacity of reinforced fiberous concrete beams are applicable with the experiments including lightly reinforced concrete beams. The reinforcing effect when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used in beams was also estimated. The results showed that the equation to predict the flexural capacity of reinforced steel fiber concrete by ACI 544 committee didn't have a good agreement with the test results and underestimated the flexural capacity in especially lightly reinforced beams with under 1.5% reinforcement ratio. the enhancement of flexural capacity was quite considerable in lightly reinforced beams when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used. A equation to predict the reinforcing effect of steel fiber in reinforced steel fiber beams was developed. the equation was proposed as a function of both the characteristics of steel fiber and reinforcement ratio.

  • This paper describes an in-depth analysis on flexural strength of a girder-deck system experiencing a strand debonding damage with various strengthening systems, based on finite element software ABAQUS. A detailed finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed and verified against the relevant experimental data performed by other researchers. The proposed analytical model showed a good agreement with experimental data. Based on the verified FE model, over a hundred girder-deck systems were investigated with the consideration of following variables: 1) debonding level, 2) span-to-depth ratio (L/d), 3) strengthening type, 4) strengthening material thickness. Based on the data above, a new detailed analytical model was developed and proposed for estimating residual flexural strength of the strand-debonding damaged girder-deck system with strengthening systems. It was demonstrated that both finite element model and analysis model could be used to predict flexural behaviors for debonding damaged prestressed girder-deck systems. Since the strands are debonding from surrounding concrete over a certain zone over the length of the beam, the increase of strain in strands can be linked with a ratio ψ, which is Lp/c. The analytical model was proposed and developed regarding the ratio ψ. By conducting procedure of calculating ψ, the ψ value varies from 9.3 to 70.1. Multiple nonlinear regression analysis was performed in Software IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0.1 to derive equation of ψ. ψ equation was curved to be an exponential function, and the independent variable (X) is a linear function in terms of three variables of debonding level (λ), span length (L), and amount of strengthening material (As). The coefficient of determinate (R2) for curve fitting in nonlinear regression analysis is 0.8768. The developed analytical model was compared to the ultimate capacities computed by FEA model.

  • The target of this study is to compare and analyze the strengthening effect of damaged reinforced concrete beams under unloading and loading conditions through the simulation of strengthening condition in real structures. The conclusion of test results are as follows : For the concrete beam wrapped at the side in addition to be strengthened at the bottom, the strength and stiffness increase. although the flexural capacity depends on the strengthening method, it generally shows that the strength improve in the range of 22% to 39% in comparison with the specimen without strengthening. In case of applying th equation suggested by CangaRao & Vijay for the wraped concrete beam, it must be modified because it is likely to overestimate the flexural capacity considering the height of wrapping as the width of concrete. The strength an stiffness of reinforced concrete beams in proportion to the percentage of damage decrease. Damaged beams, which are strengthened by CFS, is structurally efficient and show reduction of strength comparing with the specimen without strengthening but stiffness is increasing.

  • Due to the low elastic modulus of FRP, concrete members reinforced with FRP rebars show greater deflections than members reinforced with steel rebars. Deflection is one of the important factors to consider the serviceability of horizontal members. In this study flexural test of AFRP reinforced concrete beams was performed considering reinforcement ratio and compressive strength as parameters. The test results indicated that flexural capacity and stiffness increase in proportion to the reinforcement ratio. The test results were compared with existing proposed equations for the effective moment of inertia including ACI 440. The most of the proposed equations were found to over-estimate the effective moment of inertia while the equation proposed by Bischoff and Scanlon (2007) most accurately predicted the values obtained through actual testing.

  • The extensive use of external prestressing system with PSC-I beam to strengthen reinforced and prestressed concrete members requires the full understanding of the behavior of the strengthened members. The main approach of this research was to experimentally investigate the flexural performance of the PSC-I beam considering external tendon and an equation was developed which indicated the produced incremental stress in the tendon due to applied load. Further, this equation was verified through performing static loading tests on two experimental specimens considering the presence or absence of external tendon. The test results revealed that, the flexural performance enhanced due to the use of external tendon. Moreover, the magnitude of the estimated flexural strength using proposed stress increasing equation almost coincides with the experimental test results. However, it was the evident of the improvement of the flexural performance of the system by reinforcing with the external tendon and also proved that the proposed equation was valid and effective.
