Displacement Evaluation on the Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall (철근 콘크리트 전단벽의 변형성능 평가)

  • Recently, a concern to verify the displacement capacity of shear wall has been arised to produce suitable data for the performance based design. In this paper, a process is presented In evaluate the displacement capacity of shear wall. The displacement of shear wall is expressed as the superpositopn of shear and flexural deformation. Variable crack angle truss model with a modification and existing analysis program(XTRACT) are used in calculating shear and flexural displacement, respectively. The accuracy of proposed method is evaluated by the comparison calculation results with previous test results. From the comparison, it was shown that the displacement capacity of shear wall could be well predicted by using the process.

Flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with NSM CFRP prestressed prisms

  • The behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) CFRP prestressed prisms was experimentally investigated. Five RC beams were tested under four point bending. All beams were made with dimensions of 300 mm in width, 2000 mm in length and 150 in depth. The effects of presstress level of CFRP prestressed prisms and prism material type were studied. The failure mode, load capacity, deflection, CFRP strain, steel strain and ductility of the tested beams were all analyzed. The results showed that the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams strengthened with NSM CFRP prestressed prisms showed a significant increase in the load-carrying capacity and the deformation capacity. The NSM CFRP prestressed prisms strengthening technique could be considered as an effective method for repairing RC structures.

An Experimental Study on flexural behavior of One -Way Concrete Slabs using Structural Weled Wire - Fabric (구조용 용접철망을 사용한 일방향 슬래브의 휨거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This research is undertaken to the flexural strength, failure mode and ductile capacity of one way concrete slabs, with without splices, reinforcement with Wire-Fabric. Test results are as fallows : (1) Crack of the simple slabs is occured at a position of transerve wire and sntirely crack interval of the fixed slabs is taken place about 20cm, (2)Maximum load of slab with splices has showed almost similar to that of slab without splices, but ductile capacity increased according to rising of splices, (3) Ductile capacity of slab with Deformed Bar is higher 1.44 times than that of slab with Wire-Fabric, and it is higher 3.74 times than that of slab with Loop-wire fabric, but that of specimens of using Wire-Fabric is average 4.6.

Bending characteristics of corroded reinforced concrete beam under repeated loading

  • Bending behaviors of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams under repeated loading were investigated experimentally. A total of twenty test specimens, including four non-corrosion and sixteen corrosion reinforced concrete beams, were prepared and tested. A numerical model for flexural and cracking behaviors of the beam under repeated loading was also developed. Effects of steel corrosion on reinforced concrete beams regarding cracking, mid-span deflection, stiffness and bearing capacity of corroded beams were studied. The impact of corrosion on bond strength as the key factor was investigated to develop the computational model of flexural capacity. It was shown from the experimental results that the bond strength between reinforcement and concrete had increased for specimen of low corrosion levels, while this effect was changed when the corrosion level was higher. It was indicated that the bearing capacity of corrosion beam increased even at a corrosion level of about 5%.

  • Durability of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams with CFRP sheets under wetting and drying cycles of magnesium sulfate attack is investigated in this research. Accordingly, 18 RC beams were designed and made where 10 of them were strengthened by CFRP sheets at their tension side. Magnesium sulfate attack and wetting and drying cycles with water and magnesium sulfate solution were considered as exposure conditions. Finally, flexural performance of the beams was measured before and after 5 months of exposure. Results indicated that the bending capacity of the strengthened RC beams was reduced about 10% after 5 months of immersion in the magnesium sulfate solution. Wetting and drying cycles of magnesium sulfate solution reduced the bending capacity of the strengthened RC beams about 7%. Also, flexural capacity reduction of the strengthened RC beams in water and under wetting and drying cycles of water was negligible.

  • Any revision of seismic codes usually demands a higher capacity from structural members, making existing structures unsafe particularly from strength considerations. Retrofitting of capacity deficient members is very suitable for tackling such situations. This paper presents an experimental study on different retrofitting measures adopted for strengthening a series of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Four identical RC beam specimens were casted, out of which three specimens were strengthened by different schemes (viz., bolted hot rolled flat, bolted cold-formed steel channel, and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, respectively) on their tension face and tested under four-point monotonic loading. This study focuses on the investigation of the flexural behaviour of these retrofitted beams, observed in terms of strength and stiffness. It was concluded that all retrofitting measures improved the structural performance of these beams. However, the cost involved with each strengthening mode was proportional to the improvement in the performance achieved.

  • Prestressed composite girder bridges with PS tendon at positive flexural moment region offer elastic behavior to higher loads, increased ultimate capacity and reduced structural steel weight. Two beams were tested to examine ultimate behaviors of prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to positive flexural moment. The experimental observations of the Prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to positive flexural moment are investigated and compared to the numerical results obtained by sectional analysis method, and 1-D. and 3-D. finite element analysis methods.

Evaluation of Flexural Performance of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beams (강섬유보강 철근콘크리트 보의 휨성능 평가)

  • In this experimental program specimens. designed by the test variables, such as percentage of steel fiber incorporated, were constructed and tested to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced steel fiber concrete beams. Based on the test results reported in this study, the following conclusions are made. Comparing with the load-displacement relationship of standard specimen, specimen over 0.5% of steel fiber incorporated, could be improved significantly flexural performance, such as capacity, ductility, and crack pattern. As increasing in quantity of steel fiber incorporated(0.5%~2.0%), the flexural strength of each specimen was shown the enhancement of 13%~40% in comparision with the standard specimen BSS.

Artificial neural network modeling to predict the flexural behavior of RC beams retrofitted with CFRP modified with carbon nanotubes

  • In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) is employed to predict the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams retrofitted with carbon fiber/epoxy composites modified by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Multiple techniques are used to improve the accuracy of the ANN prediction, as the data represents a multivalued function. These techniques include static ANN modeling, ANN modeling with load history, and ANN modeling with double load history. The developed ANN models are used to predict the load-displacement profiles of beams retrofitted with either CFRP or CNTs modified CFRP, flexural capacity, and maximum displacement of the beams. The results demonstrate that the ANN is able to predict the flexural behavior of the retrofitted RC beams as well as the effect of each parameter including the type of the used epoxy and the presence of the CNTs.

  • Capacity design is to guarantee ductile failure of whole bridge system by preventing brittle failure of columns and any other structural elements until the columns develope fully enough plastic deformation capacity. This concept has been explicitly regulated in most bridge design specifications of foreign countries except the current Korea Bridge Design Specifications. In the capacity design, the transformed shear force from flexural overstrength of reinforced concrete column is used as the design lateral shear force for shear design of columns and design of footings and piles. Different calculating methods are adopted by the design specifications, since the variability of material strength and construction circumstances of the local regions should be considered. This paper proposed material overstrength factors by investigating 3,407 reinforcing bar data and 5,405 concrete compressive strength data collected in Korean construction sites. It also proposed calculating procedures for flexural overstrength of reinforced concrete columns using the material overstrength. Finally, overstrength factor was proposed as 1.5 by investigating 1,500 column section data from moment-curvature analysis using the material overstrength.
