A conventional packing ring was designed with a large clearance to prevent damage due to the vibration of the rotor, which can lead to an increase in steam leakage. In this study, a flexible packing ring using winding springs was developed to prevent damage to the rotor teeth by minimizing vibration, while maintaining a smaller clearance than that of conventional rotor designs. Theoretical analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to design the winding spring to satisfy the specified allowable stress limit and minimum load requirements. The shape of the winding spring was designed by applying curves to the center and end parts of a flat spring. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used to predict the leakage of the flexible packing ring. Flow rate measurement tests were performed to verify the leakage reduction efficiency and the reliability of the CFD analysis.
A linear compressor used in a refrigerator has higher energy efficiency than other compressors. On the other hand, its vibration level has still been much severe. Changing the characteristics of connecting parts may reduce the vibration level of linear compressor. The piston, body and shell are assumed to be rigid. These rigid bodies are connected by coil springs and flexible loop pipe. This paper derived the mathematical model by combining the equation of motion of rigid parts and flexible parts. The variation of vibration level according to the change of connecting parts was investigated.
The paper presents a study on the effects of soil-structure-interaction (SSI) on the performance of the compliant liquid column damper (CLCD) for the seismic vibration control of short period structures. The frequency-domain formulation for the input-output relation of a flexible-base structure with CLCD has been derived. The superstructure has been modeled as a linear, single degreeof-freedom (SDOF) system. The foundation has been considered to be attached to the underlying soil medium through linear springs and viscous dashpots, the properties of which have been represented by complex valued impedance functions. By using a standard equivalent linearization technique, the nonlinear orifice damping of the CLCD has been replaced by equivalent linear viscous damping. A numerical stochastic study has been carried out to study the functioning of the CLCD for varying degrees of SSI. Comparison of the damper performance when it is tuned to the fixed-base structural frequency and when tuned to the flexible-base structural frequency has been made. The effects of SSI on the optimal value of the orifice damping coefficient of the damper has also been studied. A more convenient approach for designing the damper while considering SSI, by using an established model of a replacement oscillator for the structure-soil system has also been presented. Finally, a simulation study, using a recorded accelerogram, has been carried out on the CLCD performance for the flexible-base structure.
This paper develops a computer model for estimating the handling of a cabover type large-sized truck. The truck is composed of front and rear suspension systems, a frame, a cab, and ten tires. The computer model is developed using ADAMS. A shock absorber, a rubber bush, and a leaf spring aunt a lot on the dynamic characteristic of the vehicle. Their stiffness and damping coefficient are measured and used as input data of the computer model. Leaf springs in the front and rear suspension systems are modeled by dividing them three links and joining them with joints. To improve the reliability of the developed computer model, the frame is considered as a flexible body. Thus, the frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/PATRAN. A mode analysis is performed with the frame model using MSC/NASTRAN in order to link the frame model to the computer model. To verify the reliability of the developed computer model, a double lane change test is performed with an actual vehicle. In the double lane change, lateral acceleration, yaw rate, and roll angle are measured. Those test results are compared with the simulation results.

This paper presents a mathematical model and simulation method for investigating the performance of set net systems and fish cage systems influenced by currents and waves. Both systems consist of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar and sinkers. The netting and ropes were considered flexible structures and the floating collar was considered an elastic structure. Both were modeled on a mass-spring model. The structures were divided into finite elements and mass points were placed at the mid-point of each element, and the mass points were connected by mass-less springs. Each mass point was subjected to external and internal forces and the total force was calculated at every integration step. An implicit integration scheme was used to solve the nonlinear dynamic system. The computation method was applied to dynamic simulation of actual systems simultaneously influenced by currents and waves in order to evaluate their practicality. The simulation results improved our understanding of the behavior of the structure and provided valuable information concerning the optimized design of set net and fish cage systems exposed to an open ocean environment.
This study proposes an integrated serial spring-damper mechanism as a dual pulse generation system. Compared to the traditional dual pulse generation system, which used multiple springs and a damper to generate a dual pulse critical for impact testing of naval equipments, currently used separated serial spring-damper mechanism is comprised of two components: an air spring, and a damper. The proposed mechanism combines the two components into one integrated system with a unique design that lets simply changing the volume and the pressure of the air tank, and the length of the annular pipe adjust the stiffness and damping constants for testing, eliminating the need to have multiple sets of air springs and dampers. Simulations using MatLab and Simulink were conducted to verify the feasibility of this design. The results show the potential of an integrated serial spring-damper mechanism as a more convenient and flexible mechanism for dual pulse generation system.
A torque converter, connected to a transmission/transaxle input shaft, connects, multiplies and interrupts the flow of engine torque into the transmission. Damper springs are usually equipped in a torque converter to convert stably the torque power supplied from engine. Damper Springs generally have the most flexible design variables among vehicle transmission parts, so that they could be effective design factors to improve the entire vehicle's performance. Damper spring, however, has geometric complexity after it equipped in a torque converter. For that reason, modeling a damper spring requires expert's knowledge to determine many design parameters and satisfy the functional requirements at the same time. In this paper, we introduce an optimum design method applied in detailed-design stage to reduce design process and financial loss caused by adequate design. Many design variables have to be classified and structuralized for Optimization. This also could make designer concentrate on functional requirements of damper spring, not on design possibility. In addition, modeling an assembled spring has technical restriction with primitives of the current major CAD solutions because of complexity of assembled spring shape. Thus, one of modeling solution presented in this paper since detailed and exact modeling is important for CAE or DMU.
This article summarises the traditional method of soil-structure interaction based on the modulus of subgrade reaction and shows its weakness. In order to avoid these weakness, a new soil-structure interaction model is proposed. This model considers the soil as a set of connected springs which enables interaction between springs. Its use is as simple as the traditional model but allows to define the soil properties independently from the structural properties and the loading conditions. Thus, the definition of the modulus of subgrade reaction is unnecessary as each component is defined by its own modulii (Young's modulus and shear modulus). The non-linear soil behaviour for the shear stress versus distortion is also incorporated in the model. This feature allows to pinpoint the arching effect in the ground and shows how the stresses concentrate on stiff materials. Based on these principles, three dimensional program has been developed in order to solve the difficult problem of soil improvement by inclusions (stiff or soft). Also the possibility to take into account a flexible mat and/or a subgrade layer has been implemented. Equations used in the model are developed and a parametric study of the necessary data used in the program is presented. In particular, the Westergaard modulus notion and the arching effect are analysed.
