  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the CPR within ambulance. The Subjects were 890 emergency medical technicians in fire department in Gyeonggido. After continuing education program, the emergency medical technicians completed the questionnaires from January to February, 2012. Questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics, method of chest compression (one handed or two handed), chest compression - ventilation ratio, and hands only CPR. Data were analyzed by frequency analysis and Chi-square test, t-test. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was followed by Scheffe post-hoc test to analyze changes in all parameters between all groups. One handed chest compression accounted for 14.0% and two handed chest compression accounted for 86.0%. Hands only CPR accounted for 71.7% and standard CPR (30:2) accounted for 28.3%. In order to perform the high quality CPR, as least three persons must be dispatched in the ambulance. The flexible management of manpower may improve the survival from the cardiac arrest. A systemic approach for educating and training EMT's in CPR is needed.

  • We are generally interested in the analysis, detection and prediction of structural motifs in proteins, in order to infer compatibility of amino acid sequence to structure in proteins of known three-dimensional structure available in the Protein Data Bank. In this context, we are analyzing some of the well-characterized structural motifs in proteins. We have analyzed simple structural motifs, such as, ${\beta}$-turns and ${\gamma}$-turns by evaluating the statistically significant type-dependent amino acid positional preferences in enlarged representative protein datasets and revised the amino acid preferences. In doing so, we identified a number of ‘unexpected’ isolated ${\beta}$-turns with a proline amino acid residue at the (i+2) position. We extended our study to the identification of multiple turns, continuous turns and to peptides that correspond to the combinations of individual ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$-turns in proteins and examined the hydrogen-bond interactions likely to stabilize these peptides. This led us to develop a database of structural motifs in proteins (DSMP) that would primarily allow us to make queries based on the various fields in the database for some well-characterized structural motifs, such as, helices, ${\beta}$-strands, turns, ${\beta}$-hairpins, ${\beta}$-${\alpha}$-${\beta}$, ${\psi}$-loops, ${\beta}$-sheets, disulphide bridges. We have recently implemented this information for all entries in the current PDB in a relational database called ODSMP using Oracle9i that is easy to update and maintain and added few additional structural motifs. We have also developed another relational database corresponding to amino acid sequences and their associated secondary structure for representative proteins in the PDB called PSSARD. This database allows flexible queries to be made on the compatibility of amino acid sequences in the PDB to ‘user-defined’ super-secondary structure conformation and vice-versa. Currently, we have extended this database to include nearly 23,000 protein crystal structures available in the PDB. Further, we have analyzed the ‘structural plasticity’ associated with the ${\beta}$-propeller structural motif We have developed a method to automatically detect ${\beta}$-propellers from the PDB codes. We evaluated the accuracy and consistency of predicting ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$-turns in proteins using the residue-coupled model. I will discuss results of our work and describe databases and software applications that have been developed.

  • We fabricated transparent conductive electrodes with silver (Ag) nanofibers by electrospinning process. Ag nanofibers have high aspect ratio and fused junctions which result in low sheet resistance. Electrospinning is a fast and efficient process to fabricate continuous one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers. Ag/polymer ink were prepared in polymer matrix solution by a sol-gel method. Then, Ag/polymer nanofibers precursors are heated at $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ in air for 2 h to eliminate partially the polymers. The topographical features of the Ag nanofibers were characterized by FE-SEM, and the electrical property was analyzed through I-V measurement system. Finally, optical property was measured using UV/VIS spectroscopy. The transparent conductive electrodes with Ag nanofibers exhibited a sheet resistance (Rs) of $250{\Omega}/sq$ at a transparency (T) of 83%. Transparent conductive films, contain the Ag nanofibers as conductive materials, have good electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Therefore, it is expected to be useful for the application of flexible display in the future.

  • Home service robot are not working in the fixed task such as industrial robot, because they are together with human in the same indoor space, but have to do in much more flexible and various environments. Most of them are developed on the base of the wheel-base mobile robot in the same method as a vehicle robot for factory automation. In these days, for holonomic system characteristics, omni-directional wheels are used in the mobile robot. A holonomicrobot, using omni-directional wheels, is capable of driving in any direction. But trajectory control for omni-directional mobile robot is not easy. Especially, azimuth control which sensor uncertainty problem is included is much more difficult. This paper develops trajectory controller of 3-wheels omni-directional mobile robot using fuzzy azimuth estimator. A trajectory controller for an omni-directional mobile robot, which each motor is controlled by an individual PID law to follow the speed command from inverse kinematics, needs a precise sensing data of its azimuth and exact estimation of reference azimuth value. It has imprecision and uncertainty inherent to perception sensors for azimuth. In this paper, they are solved by using fuzzy logic inference which can be used straightforward to perform the control of the mobile robot by means of the fuzzy behavior-based scheme already existent in literature. Finally, the good performance of the developed mobile robot is confirmed through live tests of path control task.

  • In this paper, we suggest a method to simulate high-quality iguana animation by using low-quality motion capture data. Iguana motion data captured using a small number of markers cannot express its movement precisely, and even with a realistic skin mesh, it shows unnatural movement because of limited degrees of freedom. In order to solve this problem, we propose to simulate a natural and flexible movement by applying a soft-body simulation technique which models the movement of an iguana according to muscle forces and body's elastic forces. We construct a motion graph from the motion capture data to describe the iguana's various movements, and utilize it to select appropriate movements when the iguana moves. A target point on a terrain is set from the user's input, and a graph path is planned based on it. As a result, the input movement of iguana walking on a flat ground transforms to a movement that is adapted in an online manner to the irregular heights of the terrain. Such a movement is used to calculate the ideal muscle lengths that are needed for soft-body simulation. Lastly, a tetrahedral mesh of the iguana is physically simulated to adapt to various situations by applying a soft-body simulation technique.

  • Objectives : The goal of surgical management of cerebral arteriovenous malformation(AVM) is elimination of the lesion without development of new neurological deficits. To improve the management results of cerebral AVMs in the future, this article discusses about surgical complications of the AVM and their management. Material and Methods : During the past 18 years, 116 patients with cerebral AVMs were managed by surgery. Among these cases, 7 cases died, 7 cases developed new neurological deficits, 11 cases residual AVM and 5 cases intracerebral hematoma(ICH) after surgery. The author analyzes the causes of those complications and investigates the methods to minimized those complications based on the review of the literatures. Results : One stage removal of AVM and ICH in the poor neurological state were performed in 5 of 7 death cases. Subtotal removal of ICH followed by delayed AVM surgery after recovery is regard as one method to improve the outcome of patient with large ICH. Postoperative new neurological deficits developed owing to normal perfusion pressure breakthrough(NPPB) in 3, judgement error in 2, preoperative embolization in 1 and cortical injury in 1 case(s). Proper management of NPPB, accurate anatomical knowledge and physiological monitoring during operation, and well trained skill for embolization are regard as methods to minimize those complications. Residual AVMs after surgery were noticed in 11 cases, in which unintended 6 cases due to inaccurate dissection of peripheral margin of AVM, and intended 3 cases due to massive brain swelling during operation, 1 cases due to diffuse type and 1 case due to multiple type of AVM. Accurate dissection of peripheral margin of AVM and mild hypotension during operation may help to avoid this complication. Postoperative hemorrhage occurred in 3 cases due to rupture of the residual AVM and in 2 cases due to oozing from the AVM bed. Complete resection of AVM, complete control of bleeding points at AVM bed and mild hypotension during early postoperative period are the methods to avoid this complication. Conclusion : A precise but flexible therapeutic strategy and refined skill for endovascular, radiosurgical and microsurgical techniques are required to successful treatment of cerebral AVM. Adequate timing of AVM resection, accurate anatomical knowledge, proper management of NPPB and accurate dissection of peripheral margin of AVM are the key points for avoiding complications of the AVM surgery.

  • Recent researches which purport to Integrate distributed information have been concentrated on developing efficient mediator systems that not only provide a high degree of autonomy for local users but also support the flexible integration of required functions for global users. However, there has been little attention on how to evaluate a global query in a mediator. A global query is transformed into a set of its sub-queries and each sub-query is the unit of evaluation in a remote server. Therefore, it is possible to speed up the execution of a global query if the previous results of frequently evaluated sub-queries are materialized in a mediator. Since the Integration schema of a mediator can be incrementally modified and the evaluation frequency of a global query can also be continuously varied, query usage should be carefully monitored to determine the optimized set of materialized sub-queries. Furthermore, as the number of sub-queries increases, the optimization process itself may take too long, so that the optimized set Identified by a long optimization process nay become obsolete due to the recent change of query usage. This paper proposes the adaptive selection of materialized sub-queries such that available storage in a mediator can be highly utilized at any time. In order to differentiate the recent usage of a query from the past, the accumulated usage frequency of a query decays as time goes by.

  • This study offers a novel method for improving the physical contact between the anode and fuel in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC): a direct generation of carbon in a porous Ni anode through the thermal decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons. Three kinds of alkane hydrocarbons with different carbon numbers (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8) are tested. From electron microscope observations of the carbon particles generated from each hydrocarbon, we confirm that more carbon spheres (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and carbon nanofibers (CNF) were identified with increasing carbon number. Raman scattering results revealed that the carbon samples became less crystalline and more flexible with increasing carbon number. DCFC performance was measured at $700^{\circ}C$ with the anode fueled by the same mass of each carbon sample. One-dimensional carbon fuels of CNT and CNF more actively produced and had power densities 148 and 210 times higher than that of the CS, respectively. This difference is partly attributed to the findings that the less-crystalline CNT and CNF have much lower charge transfer resistances than the CS.

  • Background: Pleural drainage following video-assisted thoracic surgery has traditionally been achieved with largebore, semi-rigid chest tubes. Recent trends in thoracic surgery have been toward less invasive approaches for a variety of diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of drainage by means of small, soft, and flexible 14Fr Blake drains. Material and Method: Between December 2007 and March 2008, 14Fr silastic Blake drains were used for drainage of the pleural cavity in 37 patients who underwent a variety of video-assisted thoracic surgical procedures at our institution. Result: The average postoperative length of hospital stay was 3.26 days (range, 2~12 days), Blake drains were left in the pleural space for an average of 3.15 days (range, 1~7 days), and the average amount of drainage was 43.8 ml/day. The maximal amount of blood removed daily by a Brake drain was as much as 290 mL. There were no drain-related complications. Blake drains seemed to cause less pain while in place, and particularly at the time of removal. Conclusion: The use of a Blake drain following minor thoracic surgery appeared to be safe and effective in drainage of fluid or air in the pleural space, and were associated with minimal discomfort.
