  • In this paper we describe solutions to address critical challenges in direct fabrication of amorphous silicon thin film transistor (TFTs) arrays for active matrix flexible displays. For all flexible substrates a manufacturable handling protocol in automated display-scale equipment is required. For metal foil substrates the principal challenges are planarization and electrical isolation, and management of stress (CTE mismatch) during TFT fabrication. For plastic substrates the principal challenge is dimensional instability management.

  • Next-generation displays should be transparent and flexible as well as having high resolution and frame number. The main factor for active matrix organic light emitting diode and next-generation displays is the development of TFTs (thin-film transistors) with high mobility and large area uniformity. The TFTs used for transparent displays are mainly oxide TFT that has oxide semiconductor as channel layer. Zinc-oxide based substances such as indium-gallium-zinc-oxide has attracted attention in the display industry. In this paper, the mobility improvement of low cost oxide TFT is studied for fast operating next-generation displays by overcoming disadvantages of amorphous silicon TFT that has low mobility and poly silicon TFT that requires expensive equipment for complex process and doping process.

  • The need for low cost, flexible, thin film transistor (TFT) display backplanes has focused attention on new processing techniques and materials. We report the development of TFT backplane technology based entirely on jet-printing, using a combination of additive and subtractive processing, to print active materials or etch masks. The technique eliminates the use of photolithography and has the potential to reduce the array manufacturing cost. The printing technique is demonstrated with both amorphous silicon and polymer semiconductor TFT arrays, and we show results of small prototype displays.

  • Add-Vision has developed a low-cost print technology for P-OLED displays on flexible substrates that meets several essentials for a new technology including: (1) Functionality including low DC voltage and wide color gamut; (2) Utilization of inexpensive tools; (3) Performance matching entry applications and markets. AVI's process is based on large-area printing of a combination of doped emissive and air-stable cathode inks utilizing truly low-cost tools to create printed P-OLEDs.

Printed flexible OTFT backplane for electrophoretic displays

  • Printing technologies were applied to fabricate a flexible organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) backplane for electrophoretic displays (EPDs). Various printing processes were adopted to maximize the figures of each layer of OTFT: screen printing combined with reverse offset printing for the gate electrodes and scan bus lines with Ag ink, inkjet for the source/drain electrodes with glycerol-doped Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): Poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), inkjet for the semiconductor layer with Triisopropylsilylethynyl (TIPS)-pentacene, and screen printing for the pixel electrodes with Ag paste. A mobility of $0.44cm^2/V$ s was obtained, with an average standard deviation of 20%, from the 36 OTFTs taken from different backplane locations, which indicates high uniformity. An EPD laminated on an OTFT backplane with $190{\times}152$ pixels on an 8-in panel was successfully operated by displaying some patterns.

  • DuPont Teijin Films (DTF) have developed a family of films engineered specifically for the flexible electronics market. $Teonex^{(R)}Q65A$ is a biaxially oriented crystalline polyester with an engineered surface and it is emerging as a competitive material for the base substrate in OLED displays and active matrix backplanes. This contribution will describe the properties of this film, its uniquely different property set compared to amorphous high performance films and discuss examples of the film in use in flexible electronic applications.

  • 유기 박막 트랜지스터 (OTFT) 백플레인을 이용한 유연한 유기 발광 다이오드 (OLED) 디스플레이가 연구되고 있다. OLED 디스플레이의 구동을 위해서 게이트 드라이버가 필요하다. 저온, 저비용 및 대 면적 인쇄 프로세스를 사용하는 디스플레이 패널의 내장형 게이트 드라이버는 제조비용을 줄이고 모듈 구조를 단순화한다. 이 논문에서는 유연한 OLED 디스플레이 패널의 내장형 게이트 드라이버 제작을 위하여 OTFT를 사용한 의사 CMOS (pseudo complementary metal oxide semiconductor) 로직 게이트를 구현한다. 잉크젯 인쇄형 OTFT 및 디스플레이와 동일한 프로세스를 사용하여 유연한 플라스틱 기판 상에 의사 CMOS 로직 게이트가 설계 및 제작되며, 논리 게이트의 동작은 측정 실험에 의해 확인된다. 최대 1 kHz의 입력 신호 주파수에서 의사 CMOS 인버터의 동작 결과를 통하여 내장형 게이트 드라이버의 구현 가능성을 확인하였다.

펨토초 레이저를 이용한 플렉시블 ITO 패터닝 연구 (Femtosecond laser pattering of ITO film on flexible substrate)

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) provides high electrical conductivity and transparency in the visible and near IR (infrared) wavelengths. Thus, it is widely used as a transparent electrode for the fabrication of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light emitting diode displays (OLRDs), photovoltaic devices, and other optical applications. Lasers have been used for removing coating on polymer substrate for flexible display and electronic industry. In selective removal of ITO layer, laser wavelength, pulse energy, scan speed, and the repetition rate of pulses determine conditions, which are efficient for removal of ITO coating without affecting properties of the polymer substrate. ITO coating removal with a laser is more environmentally friendly than other conventional etching methods. In this paper, pattering of ITO film from polymer substrates is described. The Yb:KGW femtosecond laser processing system with a pulse duration of 250fs, a wavelength of 1030nm and a repetition rate of 100kHz was used for removing ITO coating in air. We can remove the ITO coating using a scanner system with various pulse energies and scan speeds. We observed that the amount of debris is minimal through an optical and a confocal microscope, and femtosecond laser pulses with 1030nm wavelength are effective to remove ITO coating without the polymer substrate ablation.

비용 효율적인 유연 디스플레이용 무색 투명 폴리이미드 필름 제작 (Cost-efficient Fabrication of Colorless and Optically Transparent Polyimide Film for Flexible Displays )

  • As the demand for large flexible displays such as tablet computers continues to rise, there is an increasing need for cost-efficient colorless and optically transparent polyimide film that can meet the desired performance, particularly optical transmittance. In this study, we investigated a detailed procedure for achieving optimal optical transmittance using two different combinations of monomers: 6FDA+BAPB and 6FDA+BPA+TFDB. We employed a design of experiment method to systematically synthesize polymers, allowing for the optimization of optical transmittance. In addition, we were able to achieve uniform thickness in the films by using a doctor blade. By comparing the price and optical transmittance of four different monomer combinations, we obtained fundamental data on the production of polyimide films that can be customized to meet the specific price and performance requirements of manufacturers. This approach enables users to select the most suitable polyimide film based on their desired price and performance parameters while achieving optimal optical transmittance.
