This study was attempted to investigate antioxidant activities of water and ethanol extract from Rosa multiflora (RM) by in vitro assays measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azino-di-2-ethyl-benzthiazoline sulphonate (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, reducing power activity, nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging activity, total phenol and total flavonoid content. The water and ethanol extracts from RM scavenged the DPPH radical and ABTS radical in a dose-dependent manner at the concentration range from 10 to $500{\mu}g/ml$. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of water extract was higher than that of ethanol extract. $IC_{50}$ of DPPH radical scavenging activity of water and ethanol extract were $79.73{\mu}g/ml$ and $145.85{\mu}g/ml$. The reducing power activity of water extract was higher than that of ethanol extract. The nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging activity of the RM extract was similar to their DPPH radical scavenging activity. $IC_{50}$ of ABTs radical scavenging activity of water and ethanol extract was $79.82{\mu}g/ml$ and $159.03{\mu}g/ml$. The reducing power activity of water extract (0.775) was higher than that of ethanol extract (0.568). Total phenolic content of water extract (140.74 mg/g) was higher than that of the ethanol extracts (37.83 mg/g). Total flavonoid content of water extract (45.31 mg/g) was higher than that of the ethanol extracts (42.68 mg/g). This results suggest that water extract of RM may be useful as potential antioxidant sources.

Antioxidative, antimicrobial activities and Raw 264.7 cell viability as cytotoxicity of various solvent extracts from leaf of Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. dried by different methods were investigated for processing as functional ingredient. In DPPH radical scavenging activity, RLE (80% EtOH extract of raw leaf) and FLE (80% EtOH extract of freeze-dried leaf) exhibited strong scavenging effect on $300{\mu}M$ DPPH radical solution (1.71 mg/mL and 2.11 mg/mL for RLE $SC_{50}$ and FLE $SC_{50}$). Also in nitric oxide scavenging activity, RLE and FLE showed strong activities (83.9% and 82.2% in 5 mg/mL sample concentration). Total phenolic compound contents of each extracts were found to be $73.7{\sim}215.4$ mg/g and RLE was showed the highest phenolic compound content. Also, total flavonoid contents were found to be $24.85{\sim}110.3$ mg/g and RLE was showed the highest flavonoid content. In antimicrobial activity, RLE was showed higher growth inhibition effect against all microbial strains. RLE, RLW (hot water extract of raw leaf), and FLW (hot water extract of freeze-dried leaf) exhibited strong antimicrobial activities against MRSA and S. aureus. In measurement of cytotoxicity by MTT assay, Raw 264.7 cell viabilities of 80% EtOH extracts showed better effect than water extracts. Especially viability of RLE was found be over 100% in every tested sample concentration.

The purpose of this study was to assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and preservative effects of Water Chestnut from 70% ethanol extracts. The toxicity of extracts from Water Chestnut investigated using the RAW 264.7 cell showed higher than 90% of cell survival rate. The total content of polyphenol ethanol extract was $353.1{\pm}5.6mg/g$, while the total content of flavonoid was $26.2{\pm}1.4mg/g$. With a concentration level of $1{\sim}1000 ({\mu}g/m{\ell})$ ethanol extract of Water Chestnut the range of removal of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals was $17.0{\pm}2.8%{\sim}88.6{\pm}0.6%$ respectively and the range of removal of 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals was also $2.3{\pm}0.8%{\sim}93.9{\pm}0.2%$ respectively. There were decreases in reactive oxygen species(ROS) generations ethanol extracts of Water Chestnut 1, 10, $100({\mu}g/m{\ell})$ and significance decrease at $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ (p<.01). As a result of measuring the Nitric Oxide(NO) generation amount of Water Chestnut extract 1, 10, $100({\mu}g/m{\ell})$ concentration exhibited significant (p<.001, p<.01) decreases. For the anti-bacterial features using a paper disk and the preservative features using petri film, no significance was found and therefore water chestnut extracts had not anti-bacterial or preservative features.

We investigated the effect of harvesting time on the proximate compositions and biological activities of Lactuca indica L. Seonhyang and wild species. The highest moisture content (91%) was obtained from Seonhyang harvested in June. The wild species harvested in August showed the highest crude protein (4.8%) and crude fiber contents (2.7%). Potassium contents were 626~684 mg/100 g, and no significant difference in harvesting time was observed between Seonhyang and wild species. Calcium and phosphate contents of Seonhyang leaves harvested in August were highest (350 mg/100 g and 123 mg/100 g, respectively). The highest total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were observed for wild species harvested in June (60 mg/g and 126 mg/g, respectively). Ethanol extracts of Seonhyang and wild species leaves harvested in June showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (95%). ${\alpha}$-Amylase inhibitory activity was highest (94.8%) in water extract of Seonhyang leaves harvested in July. Nitric oxide production inhibitory activity was $14.3{\mu}M$ in ethanol extracts of Seonhyang and $16.8{\mu}M$ in ethanol extracts of wild species harvested in June. Calcium content and ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activity of Seonhyang leaves were greater than those of wild species leaves. These results suggest that Seonhyang leaf can be used to develop processed foods.

In this study, in order to evaluate the possibility of applying apple leaf extract as a cosmetic material, we conducted an experiment by extracting with 70% ethanol. Apple leaf extract is analyzed by GC/MS, and toxicity is evaluated through polyphenol, flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity, antioxidant, and cell viability (MTT assay) OK, and nitric oxide (NO). It was confirmed that the NO production amount decreased 4.6 times in the group treated with the apology leaf extract through the measurement of the production inhibition of), and the anti-inflammatory effect was investigated. The total polyphenol content was 78.80 ± 0.25 mg /g and the total flavonoids were 65.25 ± 6.62 mg /g. It was confirmed that the DPPH scavenging activity increased sogonun at 79.8 ± 0.99,% at an extract concentration of 0.25%, 88.13 ± 0.89% at 0.5%, and 96.83 ± 2.00% at 1%. The cell viability was evaluated at 91.19 ± 3.49% even at a high concentration of 1000 ppm, confirming a viability of 80% or more. As a result of component analysis of GC-MS, it can be used as an antioxidant cosmetic material such as catechol (5.65%), DL-Gluciol (12.05%), Ascorbic acid (2.41%), Phytol (13.88%), Hexanoic acid (5.47%). Conceivable. The result of this experiment will be used as an important basic material in the development of natural functional cosmetic materials using apple leaf extract.
This study was investigated to analyze the contents of flavonoid compounds and the effects of fermentation on the physiological activities of medical plants, also known as SanYa (SY). Antioxidative activity of the fermented SanYa (FSY) was measured by using DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activity. DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activity of FSY were 94.3% and 45.0%, respectively. Nitric oxide (NO) synthesis was increased 11 times through the addition of FSY. However, NO production of the macrophages RAW264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was reduced to 56% through the addition of FSY. FSY showed fibrinolytic activity and indicated about 69.8% and 73.7% of xanthine oxidase and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activities, respectively. These results suggested that FSY plays a significant role in fibrinolytic activity and have strong xanthine oxidase and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activities.

Citrus, yield of which is the highest among fruits produced in Korea, is extensively consumed for processed food items. The amount of by-products of citrus produced from the processing within a short period after the harvest is tremendous. These by-products are mostly dumped into land or neglected because of cost involved in processing them. The aim of the present study was to explore the usefulness of the by-products as a new material by examining the anti-inflammatory activity of fermented extracts of citrus peels. The peels of 'unshu' (Citrus unshiu) was fermented with Aspergillus niger and their extracts before or after fermentation were analyzed using HPLC. The analysis showed that neohesperidin level considerably increased and the two new compounds were synthesized after fermentation. The anti-inflammatory activity of the fermented extracts was examined on RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Fermented unshu extracts significantly enhanced the decrease of nitric oxide (NO) production, iNOS and COX-2 expression, comparing with those of unfermented extracts. Also TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 production, both of which are pro-inflammatory cytokine, were more inhibited in fermented extracts. These results showed that the fermentation and promotion of the function of the by-products of citrus peels will help find a new application.
Objective: The roots, leaves, flowers, stems and seeds of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense are often used in treatment of human diseases such as hemorrhage, blood congestion and inflammation. Focusing our attention on natural and bioavailable sources of antioxidants and anti-inflammation, we undertook to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense used as a folk medicine in Korea. Methods: The extracts of the leaves, stems, flowers, seeds and roots from C. japonicum var. ussuriense were prepared by extracting with water or 80% ethanol. Total flavonoids and polyphenols were measured by a colorimetric assay. The free radical scavenging activity of the extract was analyzed by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and Griess reagent assay. An oxidative product of nitric oxide (NO), was measured in the culture medium by the Griess reaction. The level of prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were measured by Western blot analysis. Results: Total flavonoid and polyphenol amounts of the leaves (CLE) and flowers (CFE) showed higher than those of the seed extract (CSE), stem extract (CSTE) and roots (CRE). CLE and CFE also showed the high antioxidant activities such as DPPH, NO-like and ABTS radical scavenging activity. An antioxidant activities of these water extracts showed higher than those of 80% ethanol extracts. We investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of CLE on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. CLE significantly suppressed the levels of the inflammatory mediators such as NO and prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) in dose dependant. Furthermore, the levels of iNOS and COX-2 protein expressions were markedly suppressed by the treatment with CLE extract in a dose dependent manner. Conclusions: These results suggest that CLE water extract has a higher anoxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, these properties may contribute to the oxidative and inflammatory related disease care.

Kojongsi persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) is the major cultivar of dried persimmon in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of water-soluble extracts from the calyx (PCE), peel (PPE) and leaf (PLE) of Kojongsi persimmon. PCE showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents. In addition, the antioxidant activities (diphenylpicrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), nitric oxide and reducing power) of PCE were higher than those of PPE and PLE. Moreover, PCE, PPE and PLE significantly suppressed the production of inflammatory mediators (nitric oxide and $prostaglandinE_2$) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ and interluekin-$1{\beta}$) by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. PCE showed the highest anti-inflammatory activity. Thus, these results suggest that the calyx of Kojongsi persimmon may be highly valuable as a natural product owing to its high-quality functional components as well as its-antioxidant, ant-iinflammatory activities.

It has been shown that the extracts including eupatilin and quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside had mucoprotective effects on the esophagus and stomach through their antioxidant activities. This study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of these flavonoid compounds in an animal model of inflammatory bowel disease induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. Experimental colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. Extracts including eupatilin or quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside were orally administered to animals 48, 24, and 1 h prior to the induction of colitis and then again 24 h later. The animals were sacrificed 48 h after by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid treatment and the macroscopic appearance of the colonic lesions was scored in a blinded manner on a scale of 1 to 10. The inflammatory response to colitis induction was assessed by measuring myeloperoxidase activity, nitric oxide production, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ expression, total glutathione levels, and malondialdehyde concentrations in the colon. The results indicated that extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside dose-dependently improved the morphology of the lesions induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and reduced the ulcer index accordingly. In addition, rats receiving extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside showed significantly decreased levels of mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, nitric oxide production, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ expression, and malondialdehyde levels, and increased total glutathione levels. Extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside ameliorated the inflammatory response and colonic injury in acute colitis by decreasing oxidative stress and neutrophil activation. Extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside may inhibit acute colitis.
