  • The fluid propulsion mechanism of two oscillating flat plates is studied numerically using a discrete vortex method. Presently, the flat plates are assumed to be rigid. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the flat plates, a core addition scheme and a vortex core model are combined together. A calculated wake pattern for a flat plate in heaving oscillation motion is compared with the flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flat plate in pitching oscillation is investigated. The velocity profiles behind the flat plates in pitching oscillations are plotted to investigate the possible thrust generation mechanism.

  • The punching shear strength of concrete flat plates is one of the topics of intensive research in recent years by various concrete structures researchers. This paper reviews four current methods of analysing the punching shear strength at the corner-and edge-column positions of reinforced concrete flat plates. They include those recommended in the Australian Standard AS3600-1988, the American Concrete Institute ACI318-89 and the British Standard on Concrete Practices (BS8110) as well as the approach developed at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Based on half-scale model test results, a comparative study of these four analysis methods is made with regard to their limitation, accuracy and reliability. It is found that the Wollongong approach in general gives the best performance in predicting the punching shear strength of flat plates with torsion strips and those with spandrel beams. The Australian Standard procedure performs just as satisfactorily for flat plates with torsion strips but tends to be unsafe for those with spandrel beams. Both the ACI and the British methods are applicable only to flat plates with torsion strips; they also tend to give unsafe predictions for the punching shear strength.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in ACI 318-95. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate the strength variations with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.

  • Numerical studies are performed to investigate the behavior of flat plates under combined in-plane and out-of-plane loads. The numerical model is verified by comparison with experiments for plates simply supported on four edges. Through study on different load combination and loading sequence, the critical load condition that governs the strength of the flat plate is determined. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity so that the moment magnification method is applicable to the flat plates.

  • Recently, the applications of corrugated plates(or folded plates) are increasing due to economic and structural advantages in certain situations. And, because of the higher strength of corrugated plates than flat plates, the usage of the corrugated plates is increasing. So there are many necessities for specifications of corrugated plates. For flat plates, there are many design details in almost specifications. However, there are no detail design guides such as shear strength except the bending strength and the normal strength. So, it is difficult for engineers to design structures consist of corrugated plates. Therefore, a provision is necessary for engineers to refer for designing corrugated plates. The conclusion of this study shows a formula that helps to determine the shear strength of corrugated plates under various geometric conditions ; the size of corrugation ; the curvature of corrugation and ; the thickness of the corrugated plate. Also, it shows that corrugated plates have higher shear buckling strength than flat plates.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. For the numerical studies, a computer program of nonlinear finite element analysis was developed. It can address creep and shrinkage as weel as geometrical and material nonlinearity, and also it can address various load combinations and loading sequences of transverse load, in-plane compressive load and time. This numerical method was verified by comparison with the existing experiments. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the strength variations of flat plates with four parameters; 1) loading sequence of floor load, compressive load and time 2) uniaxial and biaxial compression 3) the ratio of dead to live load 4) span length. Through the numerical studies, the behavioral characteristics of the flat plates and the governing load combinations were examined. These results will be used to develop a design procedure for the long-term behavior of flat plates in the future.

  • Perforated plates are used for the steam generator tube-sheet and the Reactor Vessel Closure Head in the Nuclear Power Plant. The ASME code, Section III Appendix A-8000, addresses the analysis of perforated plates, however, this analysis is only limited to the flat plate with a triangular perforation pattern. Based on the concept of the effective elastic constants, simulation of flat and spherical perforated plates and their equivalent solid plates were carried out using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The isotropic material properties of the perforated plate were replaced with anisotropic material properties of the equivalent solid plate and subjected to the same loading conditions. The generated curves of effective elastic constants vs ligament efficiency for the flat perforated plate were in agreement with the design curve provided by ASME code. With this result, a plate with spherical curvature having perforations can be conveniently analyzed with equivalent elastic modulus and equivalent Poisson's ratio.

  • Applications of corrugated plates (or folded plates) have been recently increasing due to certain economic and structural advantages. Likewise, applications of corrugated plates has been increasing because they are stronger compared to flat plates. Therefore, specifications of corrugated plates should be determined. There are many design details in almost every specification for flat plates. However, except the bending strength and the normal strength, there are no detailed design guides such as shear strength. Thus, it is difficult for engineers to design structures consisting of corrugated plates. As such, engineers need a guide in designing corrugated plates. Extensive numerical study was conducted in order to identify the relationship between the shear strength and geometric conditions for corrugated plates. An eight-node thin shell element (QSL8) of the commercial program LUSAS (version 13.2) was used. The study was able to come up with a formula that helps determine the shear strength of corrugated plates under various geometric conditions, the size of corrugation, the curvature of corrugation, and the thickness of the corrugated plate. Likewise, corrugated plates were found to have a higher shear buckling strength than flat plates.

  • Porous metal plates (Metal fiber, muti-hole metal plate) using mainly in surface burner are known to have a corrosion and durability problem under high temperature condition. In this study, premixed flat flame with perforated ceramic tile of more durable cordierite material was examined with respect to combustion stability and emission. The flat premixed ceramic burner consists of perforated ceramic tile and various type of baffle plates to form stable surface flame. The results show that most stable flat flame is generated using baffle plate with open ratio of 0.193. In downward flat flame mode which is widely used in condensing boiler, CO is measured below 50ppm from equivalence ratio 0.755 to 0.765 and $NO_X$ is measured below 12ppm from equivalence ratio 0.75 to 0.79. It is also found that the range of blue flame in flame stability curve becomes wider with increasing heat capacity.
