A new depth filter media was designed and samples of flat sheet as well as cartridge assembly were prepared and tested to evaluate the filtration performance and compare with the commercial product. The arrangement of the depth filter media layers is important to reach the optimal filtration parameters like filter pressure drop, particle collection efficiency and dust holding capacity. Initially, both flat sheet samples of new media and commercial product have been tested using standard test units. Tests with new depth filter media cartridges of various pleat count were conducted in order to find the optimal pleat count which would represent the lowest pressure drop. These tests give an insight on how the pleat count and the assembly configuration affect the performance of the depth filter media cartridge. By comparing the samples with a commercial product we could confirm relatively high filtration performance of the sample cartridge with pleat count 150 made of new depth filter media. The cartridge with the same pleat count exhibits better performance without the outer mesh.

This paper describes an improved model that can be used for configuring a non-contact pneumatic head to handle a large sheet of glass. The cylindrical head model is of a large size (70 mm). It operates on vortex flow, which can simultaneously generate suction and repulsion over the flat object's surface. The head allows for the minimal non-contact lifting of objects weighing over 3N by using reference conditions (working pressure and head dimensions). Additionally, a functional flow-guide is applied for inducing a developing tangential vortex flow to increase suction and repulsion to the reference head. The cylindrical flow-guide is associated with relatively low tangential velocity. The improved model generates greater lifting force than the reference model, as verified experimentally.

This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design and machining of irregular shaped-sheet metal product for blanking or piercing operation. An approach to the CAD/CAM system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD/CAM system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD and in customer tool kit on the SmartCAM with a personal computer and is composed of nine modules, which are input and shape treatment, flat pattern-layout, production feasibility check, blank-layout, strip-layout, die-layout, data conversion, modelling, and post-processor module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, diameter and material of a wire, and availability of press. This system is capable of generating NC data automatically according to drawings of die-layout module. Results which are carried out in each module will provide efficiencies to the designer and the manufacturer of blanking or piercing die in this field.
Honeycomb structure has been fabricated by brazing method using 0.1 wt%C and 1.0wt%C carbon steel core and STS304 stainless steel face sheet. Core shear strength ratio in W and L directions was 1:1.03 in 7 mm cell size, whereas 1:1.45 in 4 mm cell size. Flexural strength on face sheet was 166.4 MPa (0.1 wt%C, W direction), 171.1 MPa (0.1 wt%C, L direction), and 120.2 MPa (1.0 wt%C, W direction) in 7 mm cell size. And in 4mm cell size specimen, it was 169.2 MPa (0.1 wt%C, W direction), 224.2 MPa (0.1 wt%C, L direction). This means that flexural strength of 0.1 wt%C core material was higher than that of 1.0wt%C core material, which was contrary to expectation. SEM and EDS analysis represented that grain boundary diffusion had occurred in0.1 wt%C core, but no grain boundary diffusion in 1.0 wt%C core. And corrugated surface of 0.1 wt%C core was flat, whereas that of 1.0 wt%C core was not flat. As a result, contact area between two 1.0 wt%C cores was much less than that of 0.1 wt% cores, It is thought to be main reason for lower flexural strength of 1.0 wt%C core.

In this work, the effect of nonwoven support during fabrication of flat sheet membranes via nonsolvent-induced phase separation, was investigated in detail. It was found that dope solutions with low viscosity tend to penetrate through the nonwoven support during phase inversion, resulting in nonhomogeneous membranes. A simple soaking treatment of nonwoven support prevented such unwanted dope penetration, and resulted in membranes with higher water and solvent permeance performance. The dope penetration through nonwoven was more prominent in solutions with low viscosity, and the nonwoven soaking treatment not effective in solutions with high viscosity.

We have studied the atomic and electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheet with intercalated atoms using first-principles calculations. The h-BN sheet is an insulator with the band gap about 6 eV and then it may a good candidate as a supporting dielectric substrate for graphene-based nanodevices. Especially, the h-BN sheet has the similar bond structure as graphene with a slightly longer lattice constant. For the computation, we use the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP). The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in the form of the PBE-type parameterization is employed. The ions are described via the projector augmented wave potentials, and the cutoff energy for the plane-wave basis is set to 400 eV. To include weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, we adopt the Grimme's DFT-D2 vdW correction based on a semi-empirical GGA-type theory. Our calculations reveal that the localized states appear at the zigzag edge of the GNR on the h-BN sheet due to the flat band of the zigzag edge at the Fermi level and the localized states rapidly decay into the bulk. The open-edged graphene with a large corrugation allows some space between graphene and h-BN sheet. Therefore, atoms or molecules can be intercalated between them. We have considered various types of atoms for intercalation. The atoms are initially placed at the edge of the GNR or inserted in between GNR and h-BN sheet to find the effect of intercalated atoms on the atomic and electronic structure of graphene. We find that the impurity atoms at the edge of GNR are more stable than in between GNR and h-BN sheet for all cases considered. The nickel atom has the lowest energy difference of ~0.2 eV, which means that it is relatively easy to intercalate the Ni atom in this structure. Finally, the magnetic properties of intercalated atoms between GNR and h-BN sheet are investigated.
This paper presents the results of measurements relating to the aerodynamic forces on flat square plates which were allowed to rotate at different speeds about their horizontal axis, by modifying the velocity of the incoming flow. A 1 m square test-sheet and a 0.3 m square test-sheet were fitted with a number of pressure sensors in order to obtain information relating to the instantaneous pressure distribution acting on the test-sheet; a compact gyroscope to record the angular velocity during the rotational motion was also implemented. Previous work on autorotation has illustrated that the angular velocity varies with respect to the torque induced by the wind, the thickness and aspect ratio of the test-sheet, any frictional effects present at the bearings, and the vorticity generated through the interaction between the plate and the wind flow. The current paper sets out a method based on the solution of the equation of motion of a rotating plate which enables the determination of angular velocities on autorotating elements to be predicted. This approach is then used in conjunction with the experimental data in order to evaluate the damping introduced by the frictional effects at the bearings during steady autorotation.
A scanning stereo-PIV system was developed to measure the three-dimensional distribution of three-component velocity in a turbulent round jet. A laser light beam produced by a high repetition rate YLF pulse laser was expanded vertically by a cylindrical lens to form a laser light sheet. The light sheet is scanned in a direction normal to the sheet by a flat mirror mounted on an optical scanner, which is controlled by a programmable scanner controller. Two high-speed mega-pixel resolution C-MOS cameras captured the particle images illuminated by the light sheet, and stereoscopic PIV method was adopted to acquire the 3D-3C-velocity distribution of turbulent round jet in an octagonal tank filled with water. The jet Reynolds number was set at Re=1000 and the streamwise location of the measurement was fixed at approximately x = 40D. Time evolution of three-dimensional vortical structure, which is identified by vorticity, is visualized. It revealed that the existence of a group of hairpin-like vortex structures was quite evident around the rim of the shear layer of the jet. Turbulence statistics shows good agreement with the previous data, and divergence of a filtered (unfiltered) velocity vector field was $7\%\;(22\%)$ of root-me an-squared vorticity value.

For the purpose of reproduction of traditional gold thread, the artifact investigation was organized for 70 cases (109 pieces) of relics from Korea, China and Japan. In most cases, the main backside material of gold thread from Korea was the bast fibers from paper mulberry. In this study, the optimum sheet-making of Hanji for gold thread reproduction was tried by controlling several process factors of Hanji such as the cooking and beating time of paper mulberry fibers, the number of sheet-making ply, and converting method (Dochim). Tensile index, folding endurance and compressive strength of Hanji showed differences according to the correlation between cooking and beating time, and application of converting method (Dochim), while bending stiffness fell with decrease of thickness. These results can be applied to consider manufacturing factors to make Hanji for the production of gold thread.

Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is a highly versatile and flexible process for rapid manufacturing of complex sheet metal parts. Compared to conventional sheet forming processes, ISF is of a clear advantage in manufacturing small batch or customized parts. ISF needs die-less machine alone, while conventional sheet forming requires highly expensive facilities like dies, molds, and presses. This equipment takes long time to get preparation for manufacturing. However, ISF does not need the full facilities nor much cost and time. Because of the facts, ISF is continuously being used for small batch or prototyping manufacturing in current industries. However, spring-back induced in the process of incremental forming becomes a critical drawback on precision manufacturing. Since sheet metal, being a raw material for ISF, has property to resilience, spring-back would come in the case. It is the research objective to investigate how geometrical shaping parameters make effect on shape dimensional errors. In order to analyze the spring-back occurred in the process, this study experimented on Al 1015 material in the ISF. The statistical tool employed experimental design with factors. The table of orthogonal arrays of $L_8(2^7)$ are used to design the experiments and ANOVA method are employed to statistically analyze the collected data. The results of the analysis from this study shows that the type of shape and the slope of bottom are the significant, whereas the shape size, the shape height, and the side angle are not significant factors on dimensional errors. More error incurred on the pyramid than on the circular type in the experiments. The sloped bottom showed higher errors than the flat one.
