There are many factors which influence on the performance of a diesel engine. The piston bowl shape and swirl ratio are important factors to enhance the fuel-air mixing and flame propagation. In this study, calculations of the flow field in the cylinder of the diesel engine were carried out using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code for different bowl shapes and swirl ratios. In the case of constant swirl ratio, vortices which affect fuel-air mixing, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly and consistently in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat piston type. With this strong squish effect, injected fuel droplets are widely diffused and rapidly evaporated in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber. Especially a strong squish is developed and large and strong vortices are generated in the edge cutted bowl piston chamber. As the swirl ratio increases, it is found that a large and strong squish and vortices are generated in the combustion chamber and also fuel droplets are diffused into the entire combustion chamber.

This study was carried out to optimize burner of the condensing gas boiler which can save energy by utilizing the latent heat of combustion gas and reduce pollutants emission. Three reasonable distances between burner and heat exchanger were decided through the experiments of model flat burner. The optimum burner geometry was determined from flame stability, pollutant emission characteristics and applicability to practical boiler system. The boiler designed by this research reaches turn-down ratio 5:1 in the domain of equivalence ratio 0.68∼0.85 and thermal efficiency of 98%. Emission of NOx and CO concentration was under 35ppm and 104ppm.

The results of a series of experiments executed by using two pilot-scale oxy-fuel burners are presented. The oxy-fuel burners are designed for maximum capacity of 50,000kcal/hr, 200,000kcal/hr and installed in the test furnace. The effects of turn-down ratio, excess oxygen ratio, nozzle exit velocity, injection angle, and swirl vane angle on the combustion characteristic are investigated. Temperature distributions are measured using R-type and Molybdenum sheathed C-type thermocouple at various points of the flame. The results showed that maximum temperature and mean temperature increase with the increase of turn-down ratio and momentum. The maximum flame temperature was increased about 35% compared to the case of equivalent air operated condition. In addition, optimum burner type, excess oxygen ratio and nozzle characteristics are obtained for this oxy-fuel glass melting furnace.
The present study is described of the flame structure of one-dimensional, flat, premixed, laminar, coal-air flame with some addition of methane for the flame stability. A low pressure burner operating at a combustion pressure of 0.3 arm was employed in order to extend the reaction zone. Predicted results from the models considered in the present study are compared with experimental results. Comparisons are included gas temperatures, species concentrations, char analysis and measured burning velocity. Among the models, Model II $I^{*}$-d, which specified devolatilization rate constants and a char surface area factor S=4, resulted in good agreement within the present experimental ranges. The results of char analysis suggest that the extent of the reaction occurring on the panicle might be underestimated in the model so that the char surface area should be increased. A value of 4 for this factor was given by sensitivity analysis of change in char surface area. Again, model II $I^{*}$-d gave satisfactory predictions of burning velocities over most of the experimental range studied. It has been clearly shown that the particle diameter appreciably affects the rates of devolatilisation and char oxidation through the effects of thermal lag and volumetric reactive surface area, consequently laminar burning velocity.ity.
Fuel processing systems which convert HC fuel into $H_2$ rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, auto-thermal reforming) need high temperature environment($600-1000^{\circ}C$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1-5kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural & anode off gas as reformer fuel. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity.
The mechanism for laminar dust flame propagation can only be elucidated from a comprehensive mathematical model which incorporates conduction and radiation, as well as the chemical kinetics of particle devolatilization and gas phase and char reaction. The mathematical model for a flat, laminar, premixed coal-air flame is applied to the atmospheric coal-air mixtures studied by Smoot and co-workers, and comparisons are made with their measurements and predictions. Here the principal parameter for comparison is the laminar burning velocity. The studies of Smoot and co-workers are first reviewed and compared with those predicted by the present model. The effects of inlet temperature and devolatilization rate constants on the burning velocities are studied with the present model, and compared with their measurements and predictions. Their measured burning velocities are approximately predicted with the present model at relatively high coal concentrations, with a somewhat increased inlet temperature. From the comparisons, their model might over-estimate particle temperature and rates of devolatilization. This would enable coal-air mixtures to be burned without any form of preheat and would tend to increase their computed values of burning velocity.
This study presented the structure and characteristics of vinyl cords used for wiring electric equipment and appliances and analyzed the photographs of damaged flat-type vinyl cords (VFF, $1.25mm^2$) and the metallic cross-sectional structure of melted conductors. Normal VFFs were made by twisting several strands together and the surface of the conductor was red brown. In addition, from the analysis of the metallic structure of the conductor, it was found that its grains had been elongated. The surface of a VFF damaged by normal flame showed no sheen with carbonized insulation material fused on the conductor surface. In addition, from the analysis of the cross-sectional structure of the melted area, it was found that voids of a certain shape were formed on it but that the cord's own elongation structure could not be checked. The cross-sectional analysis of the melted conductor damaged by the external flame applied to a VFF to which electric current was being applied showed no elongation structure for each cord, and revealed that irregular voids and a columnar structure had grown. The surface of the VFF damaged by overcurrent was uniformly carbonized and the cross-sectional structure analysis of the melted conductor revealed that the dendritic structure had grown. The analysis of the characteristics of the VFF melted by short-circuit showed that even though some part of the surface was contaminated, it showed little sheen and that the area rebounded by melting was round in shape. In addition, the cross-sectional structure analysis using a metallurgical microscope showed the boundary surface and columnar structure and revealed an amorphous structure like normal copper at areas other than the melted conductor.

Impinging jets are observed when exhaust gases from missiles or V/STOL aircrafts impinge on the ground, flame deflector, ship deck, etc. The flow shows different patterns according to the nozzle geometry, nozzle-to-plate distance, and plate angle, for example. This paper describes experimental works on the phenomena (pressure distribution, occurrence of stagnation bubble, and so on.) when underexpanded supersonic jets impinge on a perpendicular flat plate using a supersonic cold-flow system, and compares the results with those obtained using a shock tunnel. The flow characteristics for the supersonic cold-flow system were also investigated. Surface pressure distribution of supersonic cold-flow system differed from that of shock tunnel because of water and temperature in the low-pressure chamber. Surface pressure distribution as to underexpanded ratio showed similar patterns together.

This study is focused on deposition process leading to inefficiency and hot corrosion in fossil fuel-fired furnaces and engines. An improved understanding of the coupled thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport processes governing the deposition rate of inorganic oxides and salts from hot gases containing these compounds can suggest more efficient test strategies and control measures. Accordingly, an optical re-evaporation method for accurately measuring the growth rate of deposits under laboratory burner conditions has been developed. To demonstrate the technique and provide data suitable for theoretical model development, a deliberately simple chemical system and target geometry are used. Potassium sulfate(K$_{2}$SO$_{4}$)is introduced into a premixed propane-air flat flame at atmospheric pressure. The growth rate of $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$ on an electrically heated Pt ribbon is measured by re-evaporation technique.

In this study, we calculated gas flow fields and distribution of fuel droplet and mass fraction using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code which modified to execute in IBM PC and changed three important factors, injection rate pattern (BASIC, I, II, III), different bowl shape and spray type. Especially vortices which be influenced by fuel-air mixing process, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat-piston type. As the spray type changes, it is found that conical type produced large and strong vortices and fuel droplets are effictively diffused into the entire combustion chamber. As the injection rate pattern changes I, II, III based on BASIC type, we confirmed that End-of-Injection Effect strongly influence on droplets life time.
