  • In this research, the fit of basic dresses was examined, by analyzing and comparing the satisfaction of fitness of basic dresses made by the draping method on a custom-made replica body form and that of a basic dress made by the flat pattern method. Basis dresses were produced by the draping method for each 52 subjects using custom-made body forms, and another kind basic dresses for each subjects were produced by the flat pattern method using measurements of body sizes. Both basic dresses received high scores for the satisfaction of fit, but the basic dresses produced by draping method received higher scores. Thus it is expected to produce a more successful fit by draping a basic dress on a custom-made body form. Future research using more subjects might confirm these results. A more concrete analysis through using additional satisfaction tests could be conducted. For example, each subject might also serve as an evaluator to rate her satisfaction of fit wearing each of the two custom-made dresses. Finally, examining various body forms is suggested.

  • Purpose: This review article was written to determine the effects of parameters characterizing a hard contact lens (RGP included), such as BCs, diameters, edge angles, on the time interval for tight fitted lens to return to the equilibrium when it was decentered from blinking. Methods: A mathematical formulation was established to relate or calculate the restoring forces and thickness of lacrimal layer beneath the cornea with the various lens parameters when the tight fitted lens was decentered from blinking. Based on this formulation the differential equations and their numerical solution program were set up to describe the time dependence of the lens on the position and to estimate the time for the lens's return to the equilibrium after blink. Results: It is found that the time interval for the tight fitted lens to return to the equilibrium decreases as either the BC decreases or the diameter increases because both the reduction in BC and increase in diameter result in the increase in the lacrimal layer thickness between the lens and cornea increase which yielded the lowering of the viscous friction in the lens motion. As the edge angle of tight fitted lens increases the time for recentering decreases due to the increase in restoring force without change in lacrimal thickness beneath the lens. In the case of flat fitted hard lens (RGP included), the lacrimal layer thickness under the lens increases as either BC or diameter increases which results in reduction in viscous friction so that the time for the lens's return to the equilibrium were to decrease. The edge angle of flat fitted lens does not affect the lens motion. Conclusions: The effect of BCs on the lens motion (time to approach the equilibrium) was concluded to be significant with both tight and flat fitted lens where its results are contrary with each other. The edge angle of lens only affects the motion in tight fitted lenses.

  • This study investigated similarities and differences between 2D flat sketch, 3D virtual clothing and real clothing images. Flat sketch, 3D virtual clothing, and real clothing images of T-shirts and dresses were made. Questionnaires were prepared for fit evaluation, sensory evaluation, and location evaluation. A survey of 440 questionnaires was collected from Chinese women in their 20s and 30s. As results of the sensibility evaluation, 3D virtual clothing expressed real clothing images slightly more similar than a 2D flat sketch. As results of the fit evaluation of the dresses, 2D flat sketch and 3D virtual clothing were rated as slightly longer/wider, and real clothing images were rated as slightly shorter/narrower. The results suggested that presenting 3D images with avatars as 3D virtual clothing images will provide more accurate fit evaluation results. This study presented possibilities and methods for apparel companies to utilize 3D system as an effective apparel production tool.

  • Lens centration was the fitting variable that was most dependent on base curve radius. Flatter lenses tended to decenter more. A flatter contact lens will likely have to move into the periphery to reach this point of stability. In most cases, the decentration was in the superior and/or temporal direction. It was also found that comfort complains were more common with flatter lenses. The optimal fits was highest with the 8.4mm base curve lens for all three ranges fit eyes decreased as base curve radius was increased. These lenses with steeper radii lead to better centration and therefore to better fit and comfort for more patients than do thin lenses with flatter radii.

  • Purpose: This review article was written to theoretically compare the depressing force (pressure, adhesion) to the cornea between when the spherical lenses were being tightly and flat fitted. Methods: Mathematical equations and their numerical solution programs (model) were formulated to calculate the depressing (adhesion) force to the cornea by both the tightly and flat fitted contact lenses. Based on this proposed model the effects of parameters characterizing a contact lens such as BCs, diameters, edge shape and corneal shape (ratio of long and short corneal axis, p) on the depressing force to the cornea were predicted/analyzed in both tightly and flat fitting regimes. Results: Corneal adhesion increased as the corneal p-value increased. Adhesion increase caused by the increased p-value was much larger in flat fitted case than in tight fitted one. Corneal adhesion reduced abruptly as the BC increased in flat fitting regimes while the adhesion rise was insignificant in tight fitting ones. Reduction in corneal adhesion due to lens-size increase was predicted to be insignificant in both tight and flat fitting regimes. Both the lens edge shape (edge angle) and thickness were relevant only in tight fitting regime. Corneal adhesion increased as the increased with tight-fitted lenses. As the thickness of tight fitted lenses increased, corneal adhesion inversely decreased. Conclusions: The two most significantly affecting the depressing force to cornea were found to be the degree of corneal bending toward the periphery and the BCs of lenses.

  • This study aimed to suggest a simple and well-fitting flat pattern drafting method for a men's jacket. Four jackets in thick muslin were made from four different drafting methods utilizing a few measures as breast girth, center back length, and chest width, which were not much different from the drafting methods of woman's jacket. The appearance of the 4 jackets was evaluated by a pool of evaluators consisted of graduate students who had much clothing construction teaching experiences and their motion adaptability was evaluated by two wearers who belonged within the range of the average measures of the Korean male figure as reported from the 1997's Census for Standard Body Measure. A drafting method evaluated as the most well-fitting and well-functioning in general was chosen and modified to enhance the appearance and was reevaluated to confirm its fit improvement. As a result of this study, a new drafting method, simple and not much different from that of a woman's jacket pattern drafting method is proposed. Since this method is based on the minimal measures and ratios thereof, and is not as complicated as ordinary drafting methods for men's wear, the researcher expects that this drafting method allows more chances for the students to learn and understand men's wear more easily and comfortably.

  • Purpose: The review article was written to establish an excel program that could calculate minimal Dk of contact lens without $O^2$ deficiency and actual $O^2$ concentration on cornea when contact lens were being fitted by changing lens-related factors. Methods: An excel program was formulated to calculate the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer, Dk of contact lens and $O^2$ concentration on cornea. Results: With the excel program established, minimal $O^2$ concentration needed on cornea could be calculated when the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer was changed by varying lens-related factors. A different route in the excel program was needed to choose based on the shape of lacrimal layer. The thickness of lacrimal layer was determined by the shape of meniscus made of tear between lens edge and cornea with flat fit. Thus, the $O^2$ concentration showing negative number in calculation decreased on peripheral cornea with flatter fitting and actual $O^2$ concentration would be zero on cornea. With tight fitting, the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer is much thicker than lens itself thus negative number in calculation by the excel program is shown indicating zero oxygen on cornea. It can cause $O^2$ deficiency regardless of Dk of contact lens. Conclusions: The calculation of thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer and $O^2$ concentration on cornea by the established excel program is suggested to avoid $O^2$ deficiency when fitting state is varied by changing lens-related factors.

  • This study analyzed the lower body type of 30's Korean men to develop a slim-fit pants pattern. As the analysis data, direct measurement data of anthropometric measured value in the 6th Size Korea(KATS, 2010) was used as basic data with 481 men in 30's as analysis objects. The result are as follows. First, the result of analyzing factors for the lower body type classification indicated five factors. Second, the result of executing group analysis (with the independent variable of 5 clusters extracted from the factor analysis)classified the following three types. Type 1(36.8%) displayed a medium height of lower body type, small waist and hip, slim and fit body type with a slim shape between the knee and ankle. The shape between the waist and hip had characteristics of a slight curve and short length. Type 2(35.6%) displayed lowest height of a lower body type that was large and thick between the waist and the hip. The drop value of the waist and the hip was small; therefore, the body type was flat with a minimal curve. The underpart type (below the knee) was the thickest and the length was short. Type 3(27.7%) displayed the highest lower body type, a medium level waist size, flat and narrow waist and belly. This body type had a curve with big drop value of the waist and the hip, lower part from the hip to the ankle (including the knee) and a thick calf with along leg.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare torso pattern made by draping and flat pattern method in terms of the size of breast. The size of this study was classified as 75A and 75D according to the size of breast. Each torso pattern by the combination of the size and pattern method was compared and analyzed. In order to test the fit of the draping and flat pattern that was developed according to the size of breast, the outer appearance was evaluated. The results of the study were as follows: First, The most striking size difference was difference between the front and the back on bust line level, which decides on position of the side seam in comparison of size between draping and flat pattern of 75A and 75D. In the flat pattern, the difference between the front and the back in the size of breast was consistent regardless of a change in the size of breast. However, in the draping, the bigger breast led to the bigger difference between the front and the back on bustline level. Second, the flat pattern in 75D was evaluated to be the worst in 27 items among total 46 items for the evaluation of outer appearance in the draping and flat pattern of 75A and 75D. Third, regardless of size, the draping was evaluated to be more suitable in the areas related to neck, arm hole, and waist dart than the flat pattern. These results are suggesting that the draping is a method of reflecting characteristic of the body type more accurately than the flat pattern, and that the draping is a more suitable method than the flat pattern for the design of clothing pattern of the body type with big breast like 75D.

  • For examining friction-factor characteristics of round-hole pattern surfaces which are usually applied on damper seals, flat plate test apparatus is designed and fabricated. The measurement method of leakage and pressure distribution along round-hole pattern specimen with different hole area is described and a method for determining the Fanning friction factor is discussed. Results show that the round-hole pattern surfaces provide a much larger friction factor than smooth surface, and the friction factor vs. clearance behavior yields that the friction factor generally decreases as the clearance increases unlike the results of Nava's flat plate test. As the hole depth is decreased, the friction factor is increased, and maximum friction factor is obtained for 50% of hole area. Since the present experimental friction factor results show coincident characteristics with Moody's friction factor model, empirical friction factors for round-hole pattern surfaces are obtained by using the Moody's formula based on curve-fit of the experimental data. Results of Villasmil's 2D CFD simulation support the present experimental test result.
