  • Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the flame stability and the thermal/fuel NOx formation characteristics of the low calorific value (LCV) coal derived gas fuel. Synthetic LCV fuel gas is produced by mixing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia on the basis that the thermal input of the syngas fuel into a burner is identical to that of natural gas. The syngas mixture is fed to and burnt with air on flat flame burner. With the variation of the equivalence ratio for specific syngas fuel, flame behaviors are observed to identify the flame instability due to blow-off or flashback and to define stable combustion range. Measurements of NOx content in combustion gas are made for comparing thermal and fuel NOx from the LCV syngas combustion with those of the natural gas one. In addition, the nitrogen dilution of the LCV syngas is preliminarily attempted as a NOx reduction technique, and its effects on thermal and fuel NOx production are discussed.

  • This study is focused on deposition process leading to inefficiency and hot corrosion in fossil fuel-fired furnaces and engines. An improved understanding of the coupled thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport processes governing the deposition rate of inorganic oxides and salts from hot gases containing these compounds can suggest more efficient test strategies and control measures. Accordingly, an optical re-evaporation method for accurately measuring the growth rate of deposits under laboratory burner conditions has been developed. To demonstrate the technique and provide data suitable for theoretical model development, a deliberately simple chemical system and target geometry are used. Potassium sulfate(K$_{2}$SO$_{4}$)is introduced into a premixed propane-air flat flame at atmospheric pressure. The growth rate of $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$ on an electrically heated Pt ribbon is measured by re-evaporation technique.

  • Coal-Water slurry (CWS) is a new potential form of fuel for use in power plants and industrial furnaces. The evaporation and ignition characteristics of CWS have been studied in the post-flame region generated by a flat flame burner. Individual droplets with initial diameters of 1-3mm were supported around the thermocouples and raidly exposed to a hot gas stream. The gas temperature ranged between $950^{\circ}C$ and 1600.deg. C at atmospheric pressure. The effect of droplet size, gas temperature and radiative heat transfer by screen were studied experimentally. The ignition criterion was either a rapid temperature rise in time-temperatuire curves or onset of visible flame in experiment. Incresing the gas temperature or decreasing the droplet size reduced the time required for evaporation and ignition.

  • The formation of $n-TiO_2$ powder by oxidation of Ti-ethoxied vapor in a flat flame burner reactor maintained under 20 torr has been studied. The produced powder were characterized in terms of crystal structure, chemical composition by XRD and TEM. The results showed that the powder consisted of loose agglomerated anatase and rutile particles and their size were about 10 nm and 20 nm, respectively. In the course of synthesis, changes of the flame color were happened to each condition during heating up the bubbler. The flame color transition phenomena reveled that a critical precursor delivery rate was needed for the powder formation (obtainable powder yield). The critical precursor delivery rate was estimated by a simple function of the bubbler temperature and the carrier gas flow rate. The critical precursor delivery rate was reviewed as an important variable of the nanopowder synthesis.

  • We construct a mobile broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy system to measure the temperature of combustion gases. To improve the accuracy of CARS temperatures due to Stokes lasers, a modeless dye laser is constructed. A monochromator to disperse CARS spectra is also constructed in the spectrometer for easy portability. The accuracy of CARS temperature, measured in graphite tube furnace in reference to a radiation pyrometer, is better than 2 % from 1000 K to 2400 K. The CARS temperature error due to the variation of the spectral distribution of the modeless laser is measured to be less than 1.5 % during five hours operation. As a demonstration of combustion diagnosis, we applied the spectrometer to measure the temperature distribution of the propane air premixed flame.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of laminar syngas/air mixture with 10% hydrogen content impinging normally to a flat plate of cylinder. Effects of impinging distance, Reynolds number and equivalence ratio as major parameters on heat fluxes of stagnation point and radial direction were examined experimentally by the direct photos and data acquisitions from heat flux sensor. In this work, we could find the incurved flame behavior of line shaped inner top-flame in very closed distance between flat plate and burner exit, which has been not reported from general gas-fuels. There were 3 times of maximum and 2 times minimum heat flux of stagnation point with respect to the impinging distance for the investigation of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio effect. It was confirmed that the maximum heat flux of stagnation point in 1'st and 2'nd peaks increased with the increase of the Reynolds number due to the Nusselt number increment. There was a third maximum rise in the heat flux of stagnation point for larger separation distances and this phenomenon was different each for laminar and turbulent condition. The heat transfer characteristics between the stagnation and wall jet region in radial heat flux profiles was investigated by the averaged heat flux value. It has been observed that the values of averaged heat flux traced well with the characteristics of major parameters and the decreasing of averaged heat flux was coincided with the decreasing trend of adiabatic temperature in spite of the same flow condition, especially for impinging distance and equivalence ratio effects.

  • The ignition and combustion characteristics of CWS droplets were investigated in the postflame region generated by a flat burner. The effect of radiation by screen and heating eleements ws taken into account. Also the theoretical claculations considering the temporal temeprature variation have been performed and compared with experimental results. The ignition delays were reduced by the radiation of the screen or heating elements. Therfore the radiation was considered to play some role in predicting the ignition delay.

  • The microexplosive combustion of a slurry droplet was investigated experimentally. The microexplosion has been approximately considered to be caused by pressure build-up in the shell and to be promoted by heterogeneous nucleation of liquid carrier, which is due to the suppression of evaporation and subsequent superheating of liquid carrier. To closely investigate the pressure build-up and the heterogeneous nucleation, the experiments were conducted in an electric combustor, of which temperature was controllable (400 K-900 K). And the effects of two aligned droplets on the interactive combustion and microexplosion were found in a hot post region of a flat flame burner. Transient internal temperature distributions for slurry droplets were measured. And the shell formation and the microexplosion of suspended A1/JP-8 and Al/n-heptane slurry droplets were examined with various surfactant concentrations (0.5-5 wt%) and solid loadings (10-50 wt.%). The microexplosion time of binary array of droplets was found to be less than that of the isolated droplet due to radiative interaction between droplets.

  • The present study is described of the flame structure of one-dimensional, flat, premixed, laminar, coal-air flame with some addition of methane for the flame stability. A low pressure burner operating at a combustion pressure of 0.3 arm was employed in order to extend the reaction zone. Predicted results from the models considered in the present study are compared with experimental results. Comparisons are included gas temperatures, species concentrations, char analysis and measured burning velocity. Among the models, Model II $I^{*}$-d, which specified devolatilization rate constants and a char surface area factor S=4, resulted in good agreement within the present experimental ranges. The results of char analysis suggest that the extent of the reaction occurring on the panicle might be underestimated in the model so that the char surface area should be increased. A value of 4 for this factor was given by sensitivity analysis of change in char surface area. Again, model II $I^{*}$-d gave satisfactory predictions of burning velocities over most of the experimental range studied. It has been clearly shown that the particle diameter appreciably affects the rates of devolatilisation and char oxidation through the effects of thermal lag and volumetric reactive surface area, consequently laminar burning velocity.ity.
