  • The Paper presents some potential new uses for Head-Up Displays (HUDs) in vehicular applications, where the information conveyed to the driver goes well beyond the content of today's production HUDs. Such information potentially related to the use of cellular telephones, navigation systems, vehicle to roadside communications systems, and many others. Improvements in flat panel display technologies are enabling the presentation of larger, more reconfigurable, more daylight-viewable HUD images. In addition, A Formal test and evaluation is proposed to ensure that new information displays support the driver tasks. The above developments suggest increased future opportunities for HUDs to present useful information in an as-needed, eyes-on-the-road manner.

  • This paper presents the color displays using more than three primary colors, for the reproduction of wider color gamut, and high-fidelity color reproduction. First, Natural Vision system, which is currently under development for the natural color reproduction in visual telecommunication applications, is introduced, The natural vision is based on spectrum instead of trichromatic color space, and enables high-fidelity color reproduction using multispectral and multiprimary technologies. Then, sixprimary color projection displays using LCD and DLP, and a four-primary color flat panel display are shown. It is experimentally demonstrated that the color gamut becomes much larger than conventional RGB-based display. In addition, it is proved that the spectral color reproduction using multiprimary display suppresses the influence of observer metamerism, and as a result, the color matching between the display and the real object is well improved.

  • The concepts of flexible displays and plastic electronics have become some of the most talked about new product opportunities for direct view flat panel displays in recent years. The potential advantages are frequently cited, but the achievement of commercially viable products will require many significant technological innovations in new materials and manufacturing technology. This paper will provide a very broad overview of the rationale for developing flexible displays, the market drivers, the applicable display technologies, the major hurdles that must be overcome and the required evolution of new manufacturing technologies that are essential for successful commercialization. This is intended to provide the outline and context for the series of presentations on specific aspects in each of these topics that will be delivered and discussed at the Plastic Electronics Special Session of the 2005 IMID conference.

  • The FPDs(Flat Panel Displays) such as LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode), recently, have been substituted for CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) displays because they have a convex surface, small volume, light weight and lower electric power consumption. The productivity of FPDs is greatly dependent on the area of thin glass panel with 0.6 - 0.8mm thickness because FPDs are manufactured by cutting a large-scaled thin glass panel with patterns to the required product dimensions. So FPD's industries are trying to increase the area of thin glass panel. For example, the thin glass panel size of the 8th generation is 2,200mm in width, 2,600mm in length and 0.7mm in thickness. The air flows both in the thin glass panel and in the porous PE-plate surface were modeled and analyzed, from which a working condition was estimated. The thin glass panel on the porous PE-plate surface with self-lubricating characteristics was investigated and compared with that on the square duct floating bar surface with many holes of 1mm diameter when the thin glass panel contacts the floating bar surface due to malfunction of electric power supply.

  • In this study, calibration technology that increases the alignment accuracy in large flexible flat panels was studied. For precise of calibration, a systematization of the calibration algorithm was established, and a calibration correction technique was studied to revise calibration errors. A coordinate systems of camera and UVW stage was established to get the global position of the mark, and equations for translational and rotational calibration were systematically derived based on geometrical analysis. Correction process for the calibration data was carried, and alignment experiments were performed sequentially in cases of the presence or absence of calibration-correction. Alignment results of both calibration correction and non-calibration correction showed accuracy performance less than 1㎛. On the other hand, the standard deviation in calibration-correction is smaller than non-calibration correction. Therefore, calibration correction showed improvement of the alignment repeatability.

  • To detect defect of FPD(flat panel displays) is very difficult due to uneven illumination on FPD panel image. This paper presents a method to detect various types of defects using the approximated image of the uneven illumination by B-spline. To construct a approximated surface, corresponding to uneven illumination background intensity, while reducing random noises and small defect signal, only the lowest smooth subband is used by wavelet decomposition, resulting in reducing the computation time of taking B-spline approximation and enhancing detection accuracy. The approximated image in lowest LL subband is expanded as the same size as original one by wavelet reconstruction, and the difference between original image and reconstructed one becomes a flat image of compensating the uneven illumination background. A simple binary thresholding is then used to separate the defective regions from the subtracted image. Finally, blob analysis as post-processing is carried out to get rid of false defects. For applying in-line system, the wavelet transform by lifting based fast algorithm is implemented to deal with a huge size data such as film and the processing time is highly reduced.

  • Organic light-emitting device have attracted much interest due to their potential application in large area, full color, flat panel displays. Poly(p-phenylene)(PPP), as a blue light-emitting materials, have studied in our previous report. Thus, we selected poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) to fabricate the organic light-emitting filaments(OLEF) [1-2]. In this paper, we fabricated an organic light-emitting filaments(OLEF), which can be woven into fabric. The key concept was flexibility in one-dimensional structures. (omitted)

  • Electroluminescent(EL) devices based on organic thin films are considered to be one of the next generation of flat-panel displays. In this paper, we have investigated electro-luminescent(EL) characteristics of organic EL device using $Alq_3$, PBD as emitting material. Current and luminance can be seen that express a similar relativity in voltage and could know that luminance is expressing current relativity.
