  • In this paper, the basic characteristics of flat fluorescent lamp using ultraviolet generate from gas discharge and powder type electrolyminescent display(P-ELD) using a phenomenon of the light emission eaused by the electrical field applied to phosphor are studied.   • 차세대 LCD back light 시스템으로 Xe plasma plat lamp를 주목하고 있으나 자외선 여기 효율이 떨어져 램프의 휘도 및 광 효율이 낮은 단점을 가지고 있어 이에 따른 개선이 요구되고 있다. MgO는 AC-PDP에서 방전전압의 저하, 방전의 안정성, 동작마진과 같은 특성에 영향을 미치고 있기에 이번 연구 에서는 졸겔법으로 제작한 MgO를 프린팅 방법으로 flat fluorescent lamp에 적용하였다. 실험시 사용한 flat fluorescent lamp의 경우 ITO 전극과 MgO layer 그리고 형광체층을 가진 두 장의 유리판 사이에 Ne-Xe기체를 채운 단순한 구조로 제작하였다. 실험은 압력과 방전거리에 따른 특성을 살펴보았으며, 그 결과 MgO layer 채용한 경우 방전 전압의 감소 및 static margin의 증가를 알 수 있었다.

  • Xe content is one of important factors related to characteristics of the mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp. The electro-optical properties of lamp were investigated for wide range of Xe content in Xe-Ne mixing gas. The maximum luminance of $9,289\;cd/m^2$ and efficacy of 3 lm/W was obtained with Xe 90 %.

  • In this paper, scanning backlight unit which can reduce motion blur was designed and fabricated using flat fluorescent lamp. The FFL(flat fluorescent lamp) is in the limelight as a new illuminant of next generation BLU(backlight unit), because of simple assembly and reduction of driving components. In order to control lamp brightness, lamp on-time was controlled. In this experiment, it was confirmed that lamp brightness can be dimmed linealy and in a wide range.

  • In this work, a coplanar-type plasma flat fluorescent lamp having cross type of electrode was fabricated by screen printing and sealing technique. Cross type of electrode with a dielectric layer were screen-printed on a rear glass plate, and then fired at $550^{\circ}C$. Phosphor was printed on and fired at $450^{\circ}C$. Finally, the lamp was sealed by frit glass at $450^{\circ}C$. The lamp of cross electrode type was studied depending on the electrode gap and the thickness of dielectric layer.

  • Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

Study on the Luminance Properties of Optical Films for Flat-lamp Backlight Applications

  • The luminance properties of FFL(Flat Fluorescent Lamp) backlights have been investigated in detail for the first time. The on-axis luminance gain as well as viewing-angle characteristics on various combinations of optical films were obtained from FFL backlight and compared to the results of conventional CCFL(cold-cathode fluorescent lamps) backlights. It was found that the on-axis luminance gains achieved by using optical films in the FFL backlight were lower than those in the CCFL backlight indicating that the recycling processes occurring between optical films and light sources/reflection sheet are not so effective in the FFL backlight due to the much larger area of, and thus higher absorption probability of the FFL. This result suggests that new optical films should be developed for FFL backlight and other flat-lamp backlight technologies.

  • In this study, plasma flat fluorescent lamps (FFLs) having two electrode type structures of surface discharge was fabricated by screen printing and were characterized using spectra-radiometer and square pulse power supply. Two types of FFLs (cross-type and line-type electrode structure) were compared with variation of discharge shape and electrode distance.
