  • In the passive residual heat removal system of a molten salt reactor, one of the residual heat removal methods is to use the thimble-type heat transfer elements of the drain salt tank to remove the residual heat of fuel salts. An experimental loop is designed and built with a single heat transfer element to analyze the heat transfer and flow characteristics. In this research, the influence of the size of a three-layer thimble-type heat transfer element on the heat transfer rate is analyzed. Two methods are used to obtain the heat transfer rate, and a difference of results between methods is approximately 5%. The gas gap width between the thimble and the bayonet has a large effect on the heat transfer rate. As the gas gap width increases from 1.0 mm to 11.0 mm, the heat transfer rate decreases from 5.2 kW to 1.6 kW. In addition, a natural circulation startup process is described in this paper. Finally, flashing natural circulation instability has been observed in this thimble-type heat transfer element.

  • The natural circulation system has been widely studied for use in various applications because of its inherent advantage. However, it has a key weakness called flow instability that makes the system unstable. Through massive previous research, the mechanisms of flow instability were analyzed, but there was an ambiguous aspect related to the effect of experimental parameters on the phenomenon. Particularly, there has been no report on the heat transfer performance of the system when flow instability phenomena were present. In this study, thermal-hydraulic phenomena of a two-phase natural circulation system that functions as a passive containment cooling system (PCCS) was investigated according to experimental parameters, namely, the temperature boundary (120-158 ℃) and exit loss coefficient (0-34.5) under atmospheric pressure conditions. The experimental results showed five different flow types in the loop. The flow modes that occurred by the interaction between flashing and boiling were classified by referring to the mass flow rate, void fraction, and visualization data. The system was more unstable when the temperature boundary conditions increased, but it was more stable when the exit loss coefficient increased. These results have only been confirmed in our research. The reason for the results is that the flow conditions are located on the boundary between Density Wave Oscillation I and the stable flow region, and that boundary does not have clear criteria. In addition, comparing the heat transfer performance of a system by heat rate can confirm the effect of flow instability on the thermal performance of the passive cooling system. As a result, the high exit loss coefficient stabilizes the system better than the low case and has similar heat removal performance.

  • Experimental research on flow characteristics of open natural circulation system was performed, to figure out the mechanism of the open natural circulation behaviors. The influence factors, such as the heating power, the inlet subcooled and the level of cooling tank on the flow characteristics of the system were examined. It was shown that within the scope of the experimental conditions, there are five flow types: single-phase stable flow, flash and geyser coexisting unstable flow, flash stable flow, flash unstable flow, and flash and boiling coexisting unstable flow. The geyser flow in flash and geyser coexisting unstable flow is different from classic geysers flow. The flow oscillation period and amplitude of the former are more regular, is a newly discovered flow pattern. By drawing the flow instability boundary diagram and sorting out the flow types, it is found that the two-phase unstable flow is mainly characterized by boiling and flash, which determine the behavior of open natural circulation respectively or jointly. Moreover, compared with full liquid level system, non-full liquid level system is more prone to boiling phenomenon, and the range of heat flux density and undercooling degree corresponding to unstable flow is larger.

  • This paper presents results from system-level modeling of a water-based reactor cavity cooling system using RELAP5-3D. The computational model is benchmarked with experimental data from a half-scale RCCS test facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The model prediction is first compared with a two-phase oscillatory baseline experimental case where mixed accuracy is obtained. The model shows reasonable prediction of mass flow rate, pressure, and temperature but significant overprediction of void fraction. The model prediction is then compared with a fault case where the inlet of the risers is gradually reduced using a throttling valve. As the valve is closed, the model is able to predict some major flow phenomena observed in the experiment such as the dampening of oscillations, the reintroduction of oscillations, as well as boiling, flashing, and geysering in the risers. However, the timeline of these events are not well captured by the model. The model is also used to investigate the evolution of flow regime in the chimney. This work highlights that the semi-empirical constitutive relations used in RELAP-3D could have a strong influence on the accuracy of the model in two-phase oscillatory flows.

  • In generally, under the influence of over-pressure drop, serious problems such as cavitation, choked flow, flashing and vibration has been coming around the tilting disk check valve. A PIV experiment to examine the cause of energy loss has been performed and the improvement configuration of valve seat based on this visualization results is proposed. In the visualization results, flows in the piping system became instability under the influence of the shape of boss. This unstable flows induces sudden pressure drop in the piping system. So, we change the configuration of boss as a streamlined design to be stabilized the flows. A pressure measurement has been performed to know that the influence of the configuration change. In result, the rate of pressure loss reduction is about 22% at the position of No. 2 and 24.2% at the position of No. 6 in comparison with pre-improved shape.
