An unsteady numerical simulation method for an autorotating rotor in forward flight was developed. The flapping and rotational equations of motion of autorotation are continuously integrated for given time steps, meanwhile the induced velocity field at disc plane is obtained by the dynamic inflow theory embodying the unteadiness. The transitions from arbitrary initial states to equilibrium states were simulated. Steady autorotations as numerical solutions of equations were predicted by using two sources of blade airfoil data. The simulations using airfoil data which were obtained by a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver in terms of angles of attack and Reynolds numbers have shown good agreements with wind tunnel experimental results.

This paper concerns the analytical modeling and dynamic analysis of advanced rotating blade structure implemented by a dual approach based on structural tailoring and viscoelastic material technology. Whereas structural tailoring uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive material technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material (VEM) embedded into the host structure. The main structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam Incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear. anisotropy of constituent materials, and rotary inertia etc. The VEM layer damping treatment is modeled by using the Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method, which is employed to account for the frequency-dependent characteristics of the VEM. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergistic implications of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on dynamic response of a thin-walled beam structure exposed to external time-dependent excitation.

This work investigates the subcritical free-shear prism wake at Re=22,000 by the Koopman analysis using the Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) algorithm. The Koopman model linearized nonlinearities in the stochastic, homogeneous anisotropic turbulent wake, generating temporally orthogonal eigen tuples that carry meaningful, coherent structures. Phenomenological analysis of dominant modes revealed their physical interpretations: Mode 1 renders the mean-field dynamics, Modes 2 describes the roll-up of the Strouhal vortex, Mode 3 describes the Bloor-Gerrard vortex resulting from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability inside shear layers, its superposition onto the Strouhal vortex, and the concurrent flow entrainment, Modes 6 and 10 describe the low-frequency shedding of turbulent separation bubbles (TSBs) and turbulence production, respectively, which contribute to the beating phenomenon in the lift time history and the flapping motion of shear layers, Modes 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are the relatively trivial harmonic excitations. This work demonstrates the Koopman analysis' ability to provide insights into free-shear flows. Its success in subcritical turbulence also serves as an excellent reference for applications in other nonlinear, stochastic systems.

In this study, steady/unsteady aerodynamic characteristic for three dimensional symmetric wing was investigated numerically using Vortex Panel Method. This program utilized linearly varying vortices in x and y directions distributed on the wing surface and was applied to the incompressible potential. flow around a three dimensional wing Separation and deformation of the wake are not considered. The comparison between NACA Airfoil Data and the computed results showed excellent agreement. πus method was applied to unsteady wings undergoing both sudden pitch-up and constant rate pitching motion. In the unsteady flow analysis, a formation and a time-dependent locations of Starting Vortices are considered and the effect of Starting Vortices on aerodynamic characteristic of the wing was calculated. The present method can be extended to apply for more complicated cases such as pitching, flapping and rotating wing analysis.

Fish generates large thrust through an oscillating motion with a compliant joint of caudal fin. The compliance of caudal fin affects the thrust generated by the fish. Due to the flexibility of the fish, the fish can generate a travelling wave motion which is known to increase the efficiency of the fish. However, a detailed research on the relationship between the flexible joint and the thrust generation is needed. In this paper, the compliant joint of a caudal fin is implemented in the driving mechanism of a robotic fish. By varying the driving frequency and stiffness of the compliant joint, the relationship between the thrust generation and the stiffness of the flexible joint is investigated. In general, as the frequency increases, the thrust increases. When higher driving frequency is applied, higher stiffness of the flexible joint is needed to maximize the thrust. The bending angles between the compliant joint and the caudal fin are compared with the changes of the thrust in one cycle. This result can be used to design the robotic fish which can be operated at the maximum thrust condition using the appropriate stiffness of the compliant joint.

A measurement system using stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method was configured to measure the rotor blade deformations and motions. An SPR-based measurement system was prepared using six stereo cameras. Through a series of experiments to evaluate the system measurement uncertainty, it was verified that the SPR system had less than 0.2mm standard uncertainty. The combined standard uncertainties for the lead-lag, flapping, and pitching motions were estimated as 0.296mm, 0.209mm, and $0.238^{\circ}$, respectively. The SPR system was installed at a general small-scaled rotor test system at Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The blade motions and elastic deformation were successfully measured under the conditions with rotating speeds of 360rpm or 589rpm, and collective pitch angles of $0^{\circ}$, $4^{\circ}$, or $6^{\circ}$. The advantages of the SPR system was analyzed in comparison with the measurement system used in Higher Harmonic Control Aeroacoustic Rotor Test -II.
In the present study, the effect of pitch amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of a NACA 0012 airfoil is numerically investigated. When the frequency ratio is equal to 1.0, airfoil pitching with 20 and 30 degrees of pitch amplitude shows almost small lift generation, but the lift is significantly increased in case of 10-degree pitch amplitude. When the frequency is 0.5, the lift coefficients have large values, and the lift increases with a decrease in pitch amplitude. When the frequency ratio is 1.0, the airfoil generates large thrust. The thrust decreases as the pitch amplitude decreases. When the frequency ratio is 0.5, drag is generated for the 30-degree pitch amplitude, but the thrust is generated for 10-degree pitch amplitude. In future, the effect of heave amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of the airfoil will be studied.
