  • The tube flange joint often used in the field is a kind of tensional joint method using the high strength bolts. Transferring stress is conducted by high axial pressure between each part of material that is produced by twisting the high strength bolts. And historical characteristics of the flange joint have not been studied sufficiently and it is difficult to say that the design method is established definitely. Therefore new method using ultimate strength is need to be suggested to solve there problems in using flange joint. The purposes in this study are to gain the data base for establishing design method of joint in the form like figure1 and survey whether the joint of tube flange with non-equal diameter can be designed or not in the form like rib or ring.

  • A flange joint is a pipe connection used to prevent the leakage of high-pressure fluids by inserting a gasket and tightening the bolts. Among several kinds of gaskets available, metal ring type joint gaskets are most widely used in conditions that require high-temperature and high-pressure fluid flow, such as oil pipelines, gas pipes, pumps, valve joints, etc. The purpose of this study is to investigate the contact pressure and stress characteristics closely related to the sealing performance of Class 900 flange joints used in high temperature and high pressure environments. The dimensions of flange joints with five different nominal pipe sizes were determined with reference to those specified in ASME 16.5. The metal ring gaskets inserted in the joints were octagonal and oval gaskets. The bolt tensile forces calculated from the tightening torques were input as the bolt pretension loads in order to determine the contact pressure and stress levels after fastening. Loading was composed of three steps, including the fastening step, and different amounts of applied pressures were used in each analysis to investigate the effect of fluid pressure on the contact force of the joints. A general-purpose software, ANSYS 17.2, was used for the analysis.

  • In this paper, three-dimensional finite element analysis of thread rolling process of a 12 point flange head bolt is conducted using a rigid-plastic finite element method based metal forming simulator AFDEX 3D. A whole sequence of cold forming processes of a long shaft bolt composed of four forging stages and final thread rolling process is simulated to reveal the mechanism of thread formation. A mesh density control function is applied near the major plastic deformation region to achieve computational efficiency. It has been shown both numerically and experimentally that longitudinal lengthening or shortening is negligible in thread rolling.

  • In this study, a novel vision-based bolt-loosening monitoring technique is proposed for bolted joints connecting tubular steel segments of the wind turbine tower (WTT) structure. Firstly, a bolt-loosening detection algorithm based on image processing techniques is developed. The algorithm consists of five steps: image acquisition, segmentation of each nut, line detection of each nut, nut angle estimation, and bolt-loosening detection. Secondly, experimental tests are conducted on a lab-scale bolted joint model under various bolt-loosening scenarios. The bolted joint model, which is consisted of a ring flange and 32 sets of bolt and nut, is used for simulating the real bolted joint connecting steel tower segments in the WTT. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed vision-based technique is evaluated by bolt-loosening monitoring in the lab-scale bolted joint model.

  • Gaskets are usually used for the sealing of flange joints. The joint is usually composed of two flanges, a ring gasket and clamping bolts. The metal ring gasket is suitable for pipe flanges, pumps and valve joints in high temperature and high pressure environments. A very high surface stress is developed between a ring type joint gasket and the flange groove when the ring type joint is bolted up in a flange. The dimensions of flanges and ring joint gaskets for the pipe sizes that are in common use are specified in the ANSI codes. However, sometimes it is necessary to make a new design for the flange joint which is not specified in the codes, as the equipment is getting larger and larger in size. This paper presents the contact behavior of Class 600 ring joint gaskets with oval and octagonal cross sections. Five different sizes of gaskets are employed in the analysis, and one of them is newly designed on the basis of analysis results obtained from existing models. Three load steps are used to find the stress, stain and contact pressure etc., and to compare the contact characteristics among the models due to the bolt clamping force and the working surface pressure. ANSYS Workbench version15 is used to conduct the finite element analysis.

  • To investigate the static properties of large high strength bolt shear connector in hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) and normal concrete (NC), eight push-out test specimens with single/double nut and HFRC/NC slabs were designed and push-out tests were conducted. A fine 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) model including HFRC constitutive model was established by using ANSYS 18.0, and the test results were used to verify FE models of the push-out test specimens. Then a total of 13 FE models were analyzed with various parameters including fiber volume fractions of HFRC, bolt diameter and thickness of steel flange. Finally, the empirical equations considering the contribution of polypropylene fiber (PF) and steel fiber (SF) obtained from the regression of the test results and FE analysis were recommended to evaluate the load-slip curve and ultimate capacity of the large high strength bolt shear connector embedded in HFRC/NC.

  • The authors have settled general modular design by analyzing related literatures, but general modular design are too massive to be applicable to all process devices. So, the common parts have to be selected, applied, and modified for the devices. We have chosen the dry pulverizing/mixing device for example. We have elected the target modules of this device such as flange, hinge, bolt, nut coupling. The remote assembling and disassembling possibilities of the selected modules have been analyzed from the viewpoints of visibility, interference, approach, weight and so on. We have presented final modular design proper to the target modules. The modular designs which have adopted the modular property been analyzed. The modular design points are comprised of common and unique points. Some points are common for several devices, such as bolt, flange and so on. Others are unique for each device, such as power transmission coupling. The experimental devices have been modified by these modular design points and the design drawings have been presented.

  • The objective of this study is to introduce the new possibility of sensing technology based on inductive displacement sensors to monitor the status of wheel position in the hot forging process. In order to validate effectiveness of proposed sensing technology, the indirect forging force measurement with displacement sensor was applied into a typical closed hot forging die-set used for the manufacturing of flange bolts. The locations to implement the displacement sensor were selected carefully by simulating forming process and static structural. From the measurement results of the forging force change during one hot forging cycle, it was found that the proposed monitoring system can provide useful information to understand the detailed behaviors of die-set in the closed hot forging process.

  • The H-shaped steel beam is popular due to its ease of manufacturing and connection to the column. This profile, which is used as a shallow beam, needs the high weak-axis bending stiffness and torsional stiffness to meet the overall stability. Achieving the local beam flange stability, bearing capacity, bending stiffness, and torsional requirements need a great thickness and width of the beam flange, which causes, which will cause more uneconomical structural design. So, the box-section beam is the ideal alternative. However, the current design specifications do not have design rules for the bolt-and-welded connection of the box-section beam and box-section column. The paper proposes a novel bolt-and-welded connection of the box-section beams and box-section columns based on a high-rise structural design scheme. Three connection models, BASE, WBF, and RBS, are analyzed under cyclic loading in ABAQUS software. The failure modes, hysteresis response, bearing capacity, ductility, plastic rotation angle, energy dissipation, and stiffness degradation of all models are determined and compared. Compared with the other two models, the model WBF exhibited excellent seismic performance, ductility, and plastic rotation ability. Finally, model WBF was chosen as the connection scheme used in the project design.

  • In the power ultrasound fields, the flange position for fixing the transducer is an important factor influencing on electro-mechanical efficiency of the transducer. We suggested a practical method that can determine the installation position of the flange for different resonance modes of the bolt-clamped type Langevin ultrasonic transducer. A semicircular wedge-shaped jig was manufactured and moved along the lateral surface of the transducer. The vibration characteristics were examined after a constant pressure was applied to the semicircular wedge-shaped jig. By observing the change of the input admittance of the transducer depending on the position of the pressure application, the optimum position for the flange installation could be determined. The resonant modes of the transducer were calculated by a Mason's equivalent circuit, and the particle velocity distribution for each resonance mode was calculated by a transmission line model. Since the optimum positions determined from an experimental result show a good correspondence with the node positions of the vibration modes calculated by the transmission line model, the validity of the suggested method was verified.
