  • For the better understanding of the stability of turbulent combustion, more researches on extinction and re-ignition are needed. Flame interactions in non-premixed flame have also not been greatly researched. We made a hybrid twin jet flame, the combinations of diffusion flame and partially-premixed diffusion flame, in a twin jet counterflow configuration. The extinction limits of a crossed twin jet counterflow have been extended in comparison with those of a one-dimensional counterflow because of flame interactions through heat transfer and joint ownership of various radicals. Besides, we have obtain ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number by experimental method without external ignition source using the extinction characteristic in a crossed twin jet counterflow flame. From results, we can identify the hysteresis between extinction and ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number in S-curve.

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.

  • Lean-rich combustion system was composed both fuel-lean and fuel-rich flame at once. Each of fuel-lean and fuel-rich combustion types to reduce Thermal $NO_x$ and obtain flame stability. This study was confirmed a stability of flame through variation of flame shape that EGR was applied and compared the emission characteristics of EGR lean-rich combustion system to normal premixed combustion system at real condition to review a utility of the system. As a result, emission index of $NO_x$ and CO generated from EGR lean-rich combustion system at global equivalence ratio is 0.85 just half level($NO_x$ 0.31 g/kg, CO 0.08g/kg) compared to the amount generated from normal premixed combustion system at equivalence ratio is 0.78.

  • Basic flow fields of two dimensional V flames were examined as a preliminary work to study the instability of premixed flame with vorticity generation. Laminar premixed propane and methane flame were anchored by electrically heated wire to make two dimensional V flames. Flow fields were measured mainly by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetray) and the results were compared with those obtained by LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) to confirm their reliability. Because the curvatures of V flames are so small, V flames were locally assumed to be inclined planar flames in gravitational field. The measured flow fields were locally compared with those of analytical solutions, which showed the qualitatively similar results. In downstream region, the vorticity fields were nearly constant except region near the center line, which support the assumption of locally one dimensional flame. Besides it was tried to find experimentally the similarity of flow fields in downstream region. Finally, stability diagram of propane and methane flames were drawn for the equivalence ratio less than one and the wide range of mean velocity.

  • Flame characteristics and combustion stability of a swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. Characteristics of flame and combustion instability are analyzed with the parameter of MFR (momentum flux ratio) using hexane instead of kerosene. Flame patterns of blue and yellow are changed with variable MFR. Combustion instabilities are measured and analyzed by adopting a model chamber. Combustion instability mapping is made by evaluating damping factor at the 2 L (second longitudinal) mode with variable MFR in 63 cases for operating condition.

  • A study has been conducted to investigate the effect of swirl angle in low swirl combustor. In this study, the employed swirl angles were $28^{\circ}$, $32^{\circ}$ and $37^{\circ}$. Direct flame photos show that the width of the flame is expanded and the length of the flame is shortened when swirl angle is increased. Also, as the swirl angle was increased, the flame stability region could be widened due to the expansion of lower flammable limit. Between 3 and 7kW, CO emissions was below 10 ppm and NOx emissions was also below 27 ppm at $O_2$ 15% basis over the lean burning range of 0.6 < ${\Phi}$ < 0.9. From this investigation of stability expansion effect and emission performance, it was identified that the swirl angle $37^{\circ}$ is most suitable swirling condition in the low swirl model combustor.

  • The concentration gradient effects on triple flame have been studied experimentally using a slot burner in order to stabilize stationary triple flame in coflowing stream. By means of contraction we generate the coflowing stream with uniform velocity and linear concentration gradient at the outlet of the slot. In this paper we investigated the response of the triple flame. to the concentration gradient, like the stability, the liftoff height, and the structure of triple flame. Flow velocity is measured with Laser Doppler Velocimetry. As the concentration gradient increases. the flame propagation velocity in immediately upstream triple point increases until the liftoff height of triple flame becomes minimum, and then decreases.

  • Non-halogen flame retardant have been focus of extensive research because of environmental problem. Hexakisphenokycyclotriphosphazene was synthesized in order to use as the flame retardant of ABS resin. And using bisphenol A, bisphenol S, and resorcinol, the polymers which contained cyclophosphazene structure were synthesized in order to also use as the flame retardants of ABS resin. All of the synthesized polymers themselves got the excellent flame retardancy. And as the molecular weight of the compound were increased, the thermal stability was increased. But when the synthesized compounds were used as the flame retardants for ABS resin, the lower molecular weight compound in these compounds showed the better flame retardancy and the better physical properties of ABS resin. In case of using resorcinol, it showed the best flame retardancy.

  • Sawtooth mixing device used in a non-premixed burner is evaluated for flame stabilization and NO$_{x}$ reduction. Three mixers with different blade angles are tested. Methane is delivered through the fuel jet and air passes through the co-flow annulus. The flame mode changes (attached flame, lifted flame and extinction) against the fuel flow speed are measured, and the stability diagram is drawn. Moreover, by traversing thermocouple and sampling probe in the flame, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are measured. With the change in blade angle, flame shape, flame stabilization, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are changed considerably.rably.

  • The aim of this work is to identify application of ultra low NOx and CO combustor. To achieve this, we developed the premixed oxidizer-staging combustor using a cyclone flow. Various factors such as equivalence ratio for the combustion condition and swirl type for secondary air injection have been tested experimentally for flame stability and NOx, CO emission characteristics. Before to do this, we had been tested cyclone premixed combustor in advance. it is similar to first combustor of premixed oxidizer-staging combustor. As a result, cyclone premixed flame shows the very high flame stability and low NOx emission. however, it can be identified that there were some problems such as a little high CO emission and thermal resistance of combustor wall. Cyclone premixed oxidizer-staging combustor can resolve those of problems. In our combustor, we can found out optimal condition that the secondary air injection method is swirl type, swirl direction is co-swirl and equivalence ratio of first combustor is 1.3. Quantitatively, we can achieve 10.8 ppm for NOx and 30.2 ppm for CO emissions respectively. Form this result, we can identified that cyclone premixed oxidizer-staging combustor can apply to ultra low NOx and CO combustor.
