  • Numerical simulation is performed to evaluate the conditional moment closure (CMC) models for spray development, ignition, and turbulent combustion for the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) test cases. The CMC model is implemented in the open source code, OpenFOAM, to provide conditional flame structures through the solution of Eulerian as well as Lagrangian conditional transport equations. In spite of more accurate treatment of the convective term, Eulerian CMC provides similar ignition delays and lift-off lengths with Lagrangian CMC.

화염전달함수의 위상차를 이용한 시간지연 분석 (Time Lag Analysis Using Phase of Flame Transfer Function)

  • Main purpose of the current paper is to show results of time lag analysis using phase information of flame transfer function in order to predict combustion instabilities in a gas turbine combustor. The flame transfer function (FTF) is modeled using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code (Fluent). Comparisons of the modeled flame shapes with the measured ones were made using the optimized heat transfer conditions and combustion models. The FTF modeling results show a quite good agreement with the measurement data in predicting the phase delay (i.e. time lag). Time lag analysis results using the phase of FTF shows better combustion instability prediction accuracy than using time lag calculated from the steady state flame length.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the basic flame behavior characteristics using the single fuel droplet combustion of diesel, palm-based biodiesel, and canola-based biodiesel. The results were compared and analyzed through the post processed image, which was applied the threshold level for removing noise in the raw image. The raw image was taken by a high-speed camera during the entire combustion process. At the same time, the maximum flame length, which was measured by the application code of the MATLAB program, the ignition delay, and the combustion period were compared and analyzed.

  • In the present study, in order to understand the overall spray combustion characteristics of DME fuel as well as to identify the distinctive differences of DME combustion processes against the conventional hydrocarbon liquid fuels, the sequence of the comparative analysis have been systematically made for DME and n-heptane liquid fuels. To realistically represent the physical processes involved in the spray combustion, this studyemploys the hybrid breakup model, the stochastic droplet tracking model, collision model, high-pressure evaporation model, and transient flamelet model with detailed chemistry. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made in terms of the autoignition, spray combustion processes, flame structure, and turbulence-chemistry interaction in the n-heptane and DME fueled spray combustion processes.

레이저 유도 형광법(LIF)을 이용한 버너 화염의 NO 농도측정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Measurement of NO Concentrations in Burner Flames by LIF)

  • In this study, quantitative measurement of nitric oxide concentration distributions were investigated in the laminar CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The NO A-X (0,0) vibrational band around 226nm was excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. Selecting an appropriate NO transition minimizes interference from Rayleigh scattering and O2 fluorescence. The measurements were taken in CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame with equivalence ratios varying from $1.0{\sim}1.6$, and a fixed flowrate of 5slpm. NO was found to produce primarily between an inner premixed and an outer nonpremixed flame front, and total NO concentration is raised when equivalence ratios increase. These results suggest that prompt NO is likely to contribute to NO formation in CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame. Furthermore, this trend was well matched with previous works.

  • This study has investigated the relationship between heat release fluctuations and the flow perturbations in a partially premixed gas turbine combustor using a commercial CFD code. Special focus of the current work is placed on the effect of equivalence ratio on the flame dynamics in a partially-premixed system. As the first step for this combustion dynamics study in the non-perfectly premixed combustor, flame behaviors are modeled and then compared with measured results under both steady and unsteady conditions. The calculated results of the flame transfer function with equivalence ratio fluctuation are found to well capture the main qualitative characteristics of the combustion dynamics for the partially-premixed flames.

  • This paper describes process optimization for thermal-sprayed Co-based self-flux alloy coating by Taguchi method. Co-based self-flux alloy coatings were fabricated according to $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array using flame spray process. Hardness test and wear test were performed, the results were analyzed by analysis of variance(ANOVA) considering a multi response signal to noise ratio(MRSN). From the results of ANOVA, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters on Co-based self-flux alloy coating could be predicted. The calculated hardness and wear rate of the coatings by ANOVA were found to be close to that of confirmation experimental result.

스월형 GDI 엔진의 연소실내 현상에 관한 연구 (A Study on In-cylinder Phenomena in a Swirl Type GDI Engine)

  • For the purpose of development of a GDI engine, the in-cylinder phenomena, such as the spray behaviors, fuel distributions, unburned fuel, and flame characteristics were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The GDI engine was equipped with a swirl type electronic injector and SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used far the measurements of fuel distributions. The effects of the injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset angle on the in-cylinder phenomena were investigated. As a result, it was found that the injected fuel collided with the bottom of the bowl and moved upward along the exhaust side wall of piston bowl. This fuel vapor played an important role in the instance of spark ignition. The unburned fuel and flame characteristics were greatly influenced by the injector specifications.

  • It is well known that the combustion phenomenon of diesel engine is an unsteady turbulent diffusion combustion. Therefore, the combustion performance of diesel engine is related to a complex phenomenon which involves the various factors of combustion, such as a injection pressure, injection timing, injection rate, and operation conditions of engine. In this study, the spray and the flame development processes in a single cylinder D.I. diesel visualization engine which uses the electronically controlled injection system were visualized to interpret the complicated combustion phenomenon by using high speed CCD camera. In addition, the cylinder pressure and heat release rate were also obtained in order to analyze the diesel combustion characteristics under several engine conditions.

  • The initiation and propagation of detonation waves in the air/fuel spray mixture has been numerically analyzed. An improved pressure-based method has been applied to predict the transient heterogeneous reacting flows at all speeds. Numerical results indicate that variations in the temperature gradient, the droplet size, and the fuel vapor concentration have the significant effects on the development of detonation wave in the multi-phase reactive media. The interaction mechanism between the flame-generated pressure wave and the combustion wave is discussed in detail.
