길이 스케일이 관여된 층류 화염의 연소 속도 이해 (Understanding of Laminar Burning Velocity within a Length Scale Domain)

  • Laminar burning velocities have been predicted by constant volume combustion chamber, counter flow burner and others. In this study, the measured flame propagation velocities in an assembled annular stepwise diverging tube were plotted with respect to equivalence ratio, length scale, and velocity scale. Three dimensional approach to understand the flame propagation velocity including laminar burning velocity is investigated, and the surface provides the correlation among quenching distance, propagation velocity, and equivalence ratio.

층류제트 화염의 노즐직경에 따른 안정화 메커니즘과 화염형상에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Flame Configuration and Flame Stability Mechanism with a Nozzle Diameter of Laminar Lifted Jet Flame)

  • 화염 안정성은 층류부상화염의 중요한 메커니즘 중 하나이며 화염전파속도는 화염안정화를 평가하기 위한 척도가 된다. Bilger는 삼지점을 기준으로 혼합분율과 화염의 형상에 관계된 삼지화염의 화염 전파속도 및 안정화 메키니즘을 제시하였다. 그러나 동축류 작은 노즐을 이용한 실험과 수치해석에서는 화염이 형성되고 소화되는 전 과정을 상세히 관찰 할 수는 없었다. 본 논문에서는 노즐 직경에 따른 화염거동과 화염 형상 및 안정화 메커니즘에 대하여 세분화하였다. 본 논문의 결과로 노즐에 따른 삼지화염의 거동과 삼지화염전파, 화염면 전파 및 평면화염의 존재 등을 구분하였다. 그리고 삼지화염전파 거동에 있어서 열린삼지화염전파 및 닫힌 삼지화염전파 거동에 대해 구분하였다.

연료/산화제의 2차원 혼합층에서 삼지화염의 전파 특성에 관한 수치해석 (Numerical Study on Tribrachial Flame Propagation in a 2-D Mixing Layer)

  • Propagation characteristics of tribrachial flames have been studied numerically in a two-dimensional fuel/oxidizer mixing layer. A flame is initiated by imposing a high temperature ignition source. Subsequent propagation of a tribrachial flame is traced. The flow redirection effect at the leading edge of a tribrachial flame increases the propagation speed beyond the corresponding stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. The effect of mixture fraction gradient on the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame is analyzed in a mixing layer considering that mixture fraction gradient increases as a tribrachial flame propagates toward upstream. As the flame curvature at the leading edge increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient, the flow redirection effect becomes more pronounced on the flame propagation speed. As a result, the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient.

농도구배와 평균속도가 삼지화염의 부상 특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Effects of Concentration Gradient and Mean Velocity on the Liftoff Characteristics of the Triple Flame)

  • A triple flame in a mixing layer was studied experimentally with concentration gradient and mean velocity by using a multi-slot burner, which can stabilize the lift-off flame. Flame stabilization condition, lift-off heights, and some other characteristics were examined for methane and propane flame within a range of very low concentration gradient. Pitot-tube and LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) were used for velocity. Mass spectroscopy and Rayleigh scattering signal were used for concentration gradients. Thermo-couples and SiC TFP(Thin Filament Pyrometer) were used for temperature. It was found that minimum values of the lift-off heights exist at a certain concentration gradient for constant mean velocity and this means that the propagation velocity has a maximum value. The scales of flame to the burner nozzle and intensity variation of the diffusion flame were suspected as the cause.

Experimental Study on Comparison of Flame Propagation Velocity for the Performance Improvement of Natural Gas Engine

  • Natural gas possesses several characteristics that make it desirable as an engine fuel; 1)lower production cost, 2)abundant commodity and 3)cleaner energy source than gasoline. Due to the physics characteristics of natural gas, the volumetric efficiency and flame speed of a natural gas engine are lower than those of a gasoline engine, which results in a power loss of $10-20{\%}$ when compared to a normal gasoline engine. This paper describes the results of a research to improve the performance of a natural gas engine through the modification and controls of compression ratio, air/fuel ratio, spark advance and supercharging and method of measuring flame propagation velocity. It emphasizes how to improve the power characteristics of a natural gas engine. Combustion characteristics are also studied using an ion probe. The ion probe is applied to measure flame speed of gasoline and methane fuels to confirm the performance improvement of natural gas engine combustion characteristics.

극세선 열전대에 의한 수소화염의 전파특성 측정 (Measurements on the Propagation Characteristics of the Hydrogen Flame by Ultra Fine Thermocouple)

  • 최근 석유에너지의 대체에너지로 수소에 대해 사회적인 관심이 높아짐에 따라, 수소의 연소특성에 관한 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다. 하지만, 수소화염의 온도는 고온이며, 전파속도가 빠르며, 수소화염은 가시광을 거의 방출하지 않기 때문에 화염의 특성을 파악하는 것이 쉽지 않다. 본 연구에서는 직경12.7, 25.4, 50.8 ${\mu}m$인 3종류의 극세선 열전대를 이용하여 화염의 도달시간 및 온도를 동시에 측정하였다. 이론혼합농도에서의 화염도달시간을 검출한 결과, 빠른 수소화염의 전파속도를 정밀히 측정할 수 있음이 확인되었다. 또한, 열전대의 시정수를 고려함으로써, 화염온도를 추측하는 것이 가능함을 확인했다.

Swirl Effect on the Flame Propagation at Idle in a Spark Ignition Engine

  • The objectives of the study are to investigate the effect of swirl on the flame propagation and to propose a flame propagation model that predicts the behavior of the flame front in the presence of significant swirl flow field by analyzing flame images pictured with a high speed digital video at idle. The velocity distribution of the charge in the cylinder was measured using an LDV measurement system. From the experimental results and analyses, a new flame propagation model is proposed in which flame frontal locations can be traced by superposing the convective flow field and the uniform expansion speed of the burned gas, and the proposed model reveals that the increase of the flame propagation speed on the presence of swirl motion within 1 ms after ignition is mainly due to the flame stretch, and mainly due to increased turbulence intensity later than 1 ms after ignition.

정적 연소실내 난류 예혼합화염 전파의 시뮬레이션 (Simulation of Turbulent Premixed Flame Propagation in a Closed Vessel)

  • A theoretical method is described to simulate the propagation of turbulent premixed flames in a closed vessel. The objective is to develop and test an efficient technique to predict the propagation speed of flame as well as the geometric structure of the flame surfaces. Flame is advected by the statistically generated turbulent flow field and propagates as a wave by solving twodimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the simulation of the unburned gas flow field, following turbulence properties were satisfied: mean velocity field, turbulence intensities, spatial and temporal correlations of velocity fluctuations. It is assumed that these properties are not affected by the expansion of the burned gas region. Predictions were compared with existing experimental data for flames propagating in a closed vessel charged with hydrogen/air mixture with various turbulence intensities and Reynolds numbers. Comparisons were made in flame radius growth rate, rms flame radius fluctuations, and average perimeter and fractal dimensions of the flame boundaries. Two dimensional time dependent simulation resulted in correct trends of the measured flame data. The reasonable behavior and high efficiency proves the usefulness of this method in difficult problems of flame propagation such as in internal combustion engines.

프로판/공기 예혼합화염의 전파거동 및 구조안정화에 대한 정상초음파의 간섭효과 (Interacting Effects of an Ultrasonic Standing-wave on the Propagation Behavior and Structural Stabilization of Propane/Air Premixed Flame)

  • 본 연구에서는 정상초음파의 간섭에 의해 야기되는 프로판/공기 예혼합화염의 사각관내 전파거동 및 구조안정화를 규명하기 위한 실험결과를 제시한다. 전파화염의 이미지는 고속카메라를 이용하여 획득하였으며, 이미지 후처리를 통해 정상초음파 유무에 따른 화염선단의 구조변이와 전파속도를 상세히 관찰하였다. 전파속도는 정상초음파가 교반하는 경우 증가하였으며, 이론당량비에서 벗어남에 따라 초음파의 영향은 보다 크게 발현하였다. 정상초음파에 의한 화학반응과 혼합의 촉진은 화염선단의 형상에 대한 부력의 영향을 압도하여 화염의 구조적 안정화에 기여한다.

  • Leading front of a lifted diffusion flame in turbulent mixing layer was investigated in order to find a appropriate definition of the turbulent edge propagation speed. The turbulent lifted diffusion flame was simulated by employing the flame hole dynamics combined with level-set method which yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process. By tracing the leading front locations of the temporal flame edges, temporal variations of the liftoff height, local flow velocity, and edge propagation speed at the leading front were investigated and they demonstrated the flame-stabilization condition of the turbulent lifted flame. Finally, a turbulent edge propagation speed was defined and its temporal variation from the simulation was discussed.
