The Effect of Mixture Component in a Gasoline Engine on Output (The Effect of Ignition Delay and Combustion Period) (가솔린 기관(機關)의 혼합기(混合氣) 성분(成分)이 출력(出力)에 미치는 영향(影響) (점화지연(点火遲延) 및 연소(燃燒) 기간(期間)에 미치는 영향(影響)))

  • The effect of mixture component makes a nelay time and a long total combustion period $\tau_{p\;max}$. The flame propagation delay $\tau_{df}$ was determined by the record of current ion. The pressure release delay $\tau_{dp}$ and $\tau_{p\;max}$ were determined by the indicated pressure diagram in constant volume of the combustion chamber. The results are as follows: 1) The ignition delay $\tau_t$ time takes the minimum value around $\Phi=1.15$. 2) $\tau_{df}$ and $\tau_t$ time increased according to the increases of the concentrated dilution gases, because the adiabatic flame temperature decreased due to the increases of the heat capacity. But dilution gases have little effect on flame nucleus formation delay 3) The relation between $\tau_t$ time and reciprocal laminar burning velocity is almost linear. 4) The increase of the propagation length is accompanied with increased ratio of the $\tau_{df},\;\tau_{dp},\;\tau_{t},\;\tau_{p\;max}$.

A Study on the Effects of Ignition Systems on the Heat Release Rate and Mass Fraction Burnt at a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber (정적연소기에서 점화장치가 열발생률과 잘량연소율에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The initial flame kernel development and flame propagation in a constant volume combustion chamber is analyzed by the heat release rate and the mass fraction burnt. The combustion pressure is measured with a piezoelectric type pressure sensor. In order to evaluate the effects of ignition system and ignition energy on the flame propagation, four different ignition systems are designed and tested, and the ignition energy is varied by the dwell time. Several different spark plugs are also tested and examined to analysis the effects of electrodes on flame kernel development. The results show that the when the dwell time is increased, and when the spark plug gap is extended, heat release rate and the mass burnt fraction are increased. The materials and shapes of electrodes affect the flame development, because they change the energy transfer efficiency from electrical energy to chemical energy. The diameter of electrodes influences not only the heat release rate but also the mass burnt fraction as well.

  • The effects of tumble and swirl flows on the flame propagation were investigated experimentally in a 4-valve optical gasoline engine. The tumble flow patterns, generated by various intake ports of different entry angle; $25^{\circ}$ , $20^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ , were characterized under motored conditions with laser Doppler velocirnetry. Inclined tumble(swirl) flows were induced by three different swirl control valves. The initial flame propagation was visualized by an ICCD camera and its image were analyzed to compare the enflamed area and displacement of initial flames. It was found that there is a correlation between the stronger tumble during induction and turbulence levels at the time of ignition resulting in faster flame development. Inclined tumble was proved to be more beneficial than the pure tumble for faster and stable combustion under lean mixture conditions, which was confirmed by faster propagating flame images.

A study on the influence of turbulence characteristics on flame propagation in swirl flow field (스월유동장의 화염전파에 미치는 난류특성의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Flow velocity was measured using a hot wire anemometer. Turbulence intensity was in proportion to mean flow velocity regardless of swirl velocity. And integral length scale has proportional relation with swirl velocity regardless of measurement position. Flame speed calculated by radius of visualized flame was increased and then decreased according to lapse of time from spark. Maximum flame speed was increased according to increase of turbulence intensity. Burning speed and flame transport effect increased with increase of swirl velocity, but ratio of burning speed to flame speed decreased with increased of swirl velocity. Mass fraction burned versus volume fraction burned was increased in proportion to the increase of turbulence intensity, caused by increase of combustion promotion effect according to increase of turbulence intensity and scale.

Time and distance of tulip-inversion in various shaped tube (다양한 형상의 관내에서 화염전파시 튤립화염으로 전환되는 시간과 거리)

  • The tulip-inversion of flames in half-open tubes was investigated experimentally. Experiments was carried out in tubes with various shapes. The image of a flame propagation were pictured by HICCD(High speed intensified CCD) and the dynamic pressure of tubes was measured by a piezo pressure sensor. By analyzing the images of the flame propagation, we found the time and the distance for the occurrence of tulip-inversion. Regardless of the shapes of tubes, time of tulip-inversion are similar and inversely proportional to the burning velocity. But distances have different tendency. In a straight tube, the distance of tulip-inversion increases when the burning velocity increases. But in a converging tube, the distance of tulip-inversion decreases when a burning velocity increases. And the distance of tulip-inversion in a converging tube is much smaller than the distance of tulip-inversion in a straight tube. These results are caused by the deceleration of a flame when the diameter of a hole in open-side of a tube is small. The deceleration causes little effect on the time of tulip-inversion.

  • Flame stabilization characteristics were experimentally investigated in a fuel-air cross flowing mixing layer. A combustor consists of a narrow channel of air steam and a cross flowing fuel. Depending on the flow rates of methane and air, flame can be stabilized in two modes. First is an attached flame which is formulated at the backward step where the methane and air streams meet. Second is a lifted-flame which is formulated within the mixing layer far down steam from backward step. The heights and flame widths of the lifted flames were measured. Flame shapes of the lifted flames were similar to an ordinary edge flame or a tribrachial flame, and their behavior could be explained with the theories of an edge flame. With the increase of the mixing time between fuel and air, the fuel concentration gradient decreases and the flame propagation velocity increases. Thus the flame is stabilized where the flow velocity is matched to the flame propagation velocity in spite of a significant disturbance in the fuel mixing and heat loss within the channel. This study provides many experimental results for a higher fuel concentration gradient, and it can also be helpful for the development and application of a smaller combustor.

A Visualization Study on the Effects of Ignition Systems on the Flame Propagation in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber (가시화를 이용한 정적연소기에서 점화장치가 화염전파에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • A visualization study using the schlieren method is adopted in an optically-accessible, cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber to identify the mechanism of ignition energy and ignition system interaction in spark ignited, lean gasoline-air mixture. In order to research the effects of ignition system on flame propagation, two kinds of ignition system are designed, and several kinds of spark plugs are tested and evaluated. To control the discharge energy, the dwell time is varied. The initial flame development is quantified in terms of 2-D images which provides information about the projected flame area and development velocity as a function of ignition system and discharge energy. The results show that high ignition energy and extended spark plug gap can shorten the combustion duration in lean mixtures. The material, diameter and configuration of electrodes the flame development by changing the transfer efficiency from electrical energy to chemical energy and discharge energy. However these factors do not affect of flame development as much a ignition energy or extended gap does.

Assessment of Grid Sensitivity in the FDS Field Model to Simulate the Flame Propagation of an Electric Cable Fire (케이블 화재의 화염전파 해석을 위한 FDS 모델의 격자민감도 평가)

  • The present study has been conducted to examine the effect of grid resolution on the predicted results for electric cable fire using pyrolysis model in FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator, version 5). The grid independent test for different grid resolutions has been performed for a PE coating cable and the grid resolution is defined by the non-dimensional characteristic length of fire and mean grid size. The calculated maximum heat release rate and mean flame spread rate were almost constant for higher grid resolution of 20${\sim}$25 and the computing time for the grid resolution takes approximately 20hours to solve flame propagation with pyrolysis model. The geometrical simplification of a electric cable dose not greatly affect on the maximum heat release rate and flame spread rate and the rectangular approximation of cable shape gives acceptable result comparing with the round cable with stepwise grid.

Hazards of Explosion and Ignition of Foods Dust (식료품 분진의 발화 및 폭발 위험성)

  • Severe dust explosions occurred frequently in food processing industries and explosion damage increase by flame propagation in pipes or plants. However there are few fire explosion data available due to various powder characteristics. We investigated the characteristics of ignition and explosion on sugar, cornstarch and flour dust with high frequency accidents and high social demand. The measurements showed the median diameter of 27.56, 14.76, $138.5{\mu}m$ and ignition temperature has been investigated using by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The maximum explosion pressure ($P_m$) and dust explosion index ($K_{st}$) of sugar, cornstarch and flour are 7.6, 7.6, 6.1 bar and 153, 133, 61 [$m{\cdot}bar/s$], respectively. The flame propagation time in duct was calculated in order to evaluate the damage increase due to flame propagation during dust explosion. The explosion hazard increase due to flame propagation was higher in the order of sugar, flour and cornstarch dust.

A Study on the Flame Propagation Velocity of Methyl Alcohol (메틸알콜의 화염전파속도에 관한 연구)

  • The flame propagation velocity and the flame arrival time of methyl alcohol, which is widely used as a material of paint industry and organic synthesis, d mixing solvent, and an analytical reagent, were examined at different temperatures and concentrations. It was found that the smaller the vessel size, the easier and faster the combustion. The maximum combustion velocity was 200 cm/sec in the small vessel at $30^{\circ}C$. The flame arrival time was determined to be longer with larger vessels. and shorter with higher concentrations.
