  • Experimental studies were carried out in an explosion chamber to investigate the influences of multiple cylinder obstacles on local flame propagation. The chamber dimension is 235 mm in height with a $1,000{\times}950\;mm^2$ rectangular cross section and a large vent area of $1,000{\times}320\;mm^2$. Multiple cylinder bars with obstruction ratio of 30% were used. In order to examine the interaction between the propagating flames and the obstacles, temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed video camera. The propagation behaviour of local flame fronts around the left obstacle was analyzed in terms of two different methods such as the incremental burnt area divided by the flame front length and the average of the local propagation velocity determined at each point along the flame front. It was found that two methods give good consistency.

  • This study is a preliminary research on characterization of methane - oxygen combustion used in bipropellant thruster. The limit of combustion stability and flame shape of methane - oxygen non-premixed flame injected by shear coaxial injector in the model combustion chamber Experimental studies have been carried out. A direct image of the flame was photographed using a DSLR camera, and combustion characteristics and flame length were quantified through image post-processing. As a result, it was confirmed that the stabilized flame was generated at the stoichiometric ratio as the oxidizer Reynolds number ($Re_o$) was increased, and the length of the turbulent flame was increased under the same injector diameter condition.

  • A visualization study on the effect of forcing amplitude in tone-excited jet diffusion flames has been conducted. Visualization techniques are employed using optical schemes. which are a light scattering photography. Flame stability curve is attained according to Reynolds number and forcing amplitude at a fuel tube resonant frequency. Flame behavior is globally grouped into two from attached flame to blown-out flame according to forcing amplitude: one sticks the tradition flame behavior which has been observed in general jet diffusion flames and the other shows a variety of flame modes such as the flame of a feeble forcing amplitude where traditionally well-organized vortex motion evolves, a fat flame. an elongated flame. and an in-burning flame. Particular attention is focused on an elongation flame. which is associated with a turnabout phenomenon of vortex motion and on a reversal of the direction of vortex roll-up. It is found that the flame length with forcing amplitude is the direct outcome of the evolution process of the formed inner flow structure. Especially the negative part of the acoustic cycle under the influence of a strong negative pressure gradient causes the shapes of the fuel stem and fuel branch part and even the direction of vortex roll-up to dramatically change.

  • Experiments in methane-air low strain rate counterflow diffusion flames diluted with nitrogen have been conducted to study the behavior of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiative heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. Critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined with velocity ratio and global strain rate. Onset conditions of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes are also provided with global strain rate and added nitrogen mole fraction to fuel stream (fuel Lewis number). It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this affects flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Edge flame oscillations in low strain rate flames are experimentally described well and are categorized into three: a growing oscillation mode, a decaying oscillation mode, and a harmonic oscillation mode. The regime of flame oscillation is also provided at low strain rate flames. Important contribution of lateral heat loss even to edge flame oscillation is clarified

  • An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of non-premixed flame and premixed flame. Air was used as the oxidant. Hydrogen($H_2$)/methane($CH_4$) was used as the fuel, and the mixing ratio of the fuel was 50/50%. Flame response characteristics for various velocity perturbations were experimented. The flame images was acquired using the OH fluorescence measurement and the images were digitized using MatLab code. The results of the premixed flame show that flame perturbation increases as the oscillation amplitude increases. As the amplitude increases, the gain value of the flame transfer function is observed to be a linear behavior. The flame length of a nonpremixed flame decreases as the oscillation amplitude increases. Also, it was confirmed that the gain value according to the amplitude behaves nonlinearly.

  • An numerical study was conducted on superdetonative mode ram accelerator with length extended combustor. The computation condition was based on ISL's RAMAC30 II S225 experiment. For 50% length increased combustor, flame is not sustained. For the case of 60% and 70% increase, flame is successfully sustaind. But detonation wave is oscillating and acceleration is fluctuating. Extention of combustor is helpful for sustaing detonation wave but it may cause unstart.

  • This study is to investigate the combustion instability of the variation of combustion chamber length in dual swirl gas turbine model combustor. When equivalence ratio was fixed at 1.1, as the length of the combustion chamber increases the value of the frequency decreased in 7kW while the value of the frequency was constant in 4kW. The analysis of flame behaviors by high speed camera was conducted to identify such trend.

  • To study the stabilization characteristics of diffusion flame formed in the wake of a cylindrical bluff body with fuel injection, the flame stability limits, length and temperature of recirculation zone of flame, turbulence intensity distribution near the recirculation zone of flame were measured and analyzed. The length of recirculation zone is independent on main fuel injection quantity, but it is dependent on fuel injection angles, air stream velocity, and auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone. For diffusion flame, in general, the flame stabilization is deteriorated with increase of he length of recirculation zone, but if the turbulence generator is installed, the flame stabilization is improved with increase of the length of recirculation zone. The temperature of recirculation zone is dependent on fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators, and it dependent on fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators, and it has a maximum value at the condition of each theoretical mixture. In general, the more temperature of recirculation zone is low, the more flame is stable. But when the turbulence generator is installed, the more temperature of recirculation zone is low, the more flame is unstable. The turbulence intensity in the wake of bluff body is increased with increase of diameter or blockage ratio of grid. The more turbulence intensity is increased by installation of turbulence generator, the more flame is unstable. Finally, It is clear that the stabilization characteristics of diffuser flame can be controlled by some parameters such as fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators.

  • In this study, the NOx formation characteristics of one-dimensional $CH_4$/Air premixed flame using detailed-kinetic chemistry are examined numerically. The combustor length and the amount of heat loss are varied to investigate the effect of residence time and heat loss on the NOx formation in a post-flame region. In the flame region, NO is mainly produced by the Prompt NO mechanism including $N_2$O-intermediate NO mechanism over all equivalence ratios. However, thermal NO mechanism is more important than Prompt NO mechanism in the post-flame region. In the case of adiabatic condition, the increase of combustor length causes the remarkable increase of NO emission at the exit due to the increase of residence time. On the other hand, NO reaches the equilibrium state in the vicinity of flame region, considering radiation and conduction heat losses. Furthermore the NO, in the case of $\phi$=1.2, is gradually reduced in the downstream region as the heat loss is increased. From these results, it can be concluded that the controls of residence time and heat loss in a combustor should be recognized as an important NOx reduction technology.
