The principal actions of a flame retardant are to decrease or prevent the formation of volatile products and increase the formation of char layer. Use of flame retardant additives can decrease the overall fire hazard of the product containing them thus leading to an increase in overall fire safety. Although several flame retardants have been developed for use in polymers, many of these are known to increase the amount of smoke and toxic gases generated by them. This paper present a new flame retardant using metal addition flame retardant. For this study, the experiments of flame retardancy conducted are as follows : burning ratio, weight loss rate using TGA-DTA, the measurement of LOI and char yield. And smoke mass concentration and CO yield were measured. The metal addition flame retardant reduced burning ratio and weight loss rate, increased the LOI and yield of char formation with decreased smoke mass concentration and CO yield.

The aim of this study is to enhance the flame retardancy by the synergism effect of phosphorus and bromine groups. The flame-retardant polyurethane coatings containing phosphorus and bromine compounds were synthesized. After synthesizing the intermediate products of tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) (TBOP) and trimethylolpropane/2,3-dibromopropionic acid (2,3-DBP) [2,3-DBP-adduct], the condensation polymerization was performed with four different monomers of two intermediate products, 1,4-butanediol, and adipic acid to obtain four-components copolymer. In the condensation polymerization, the content of phosphorus was fixed to be 2wt%, and the content of 2,3-DBP that provides bromine component was varied to be 10, 20, and 30wt%, and we designated the prepared modified polyesters containing phosphorus and bromine as DTBA-10C, -20C, -30C. Average molecular weight and polydispersity index of the preparation of DTBAs were decreased with increasing 2,3-DBP content because of increase of hydroxyl group that retards reaction. We found that the thermal stability of the prepared DTBAs increased with bromine content at high temperature.
In this study, the flame retardant and physical properties of the expandable graphite/polyurethane foam composites were considered by the addition of expandable graphite. The tensile strength of expandable graphite/polyurethane foam composites decreased with the content of the expandable graphite and the analysis of cell shape by SEM has shown that as the expandable graphite content increases, the cell becomes uneven and collapses. As the results of the compressive strength, density and air permeability tests, it was found that density and as the content of the expandable graphite increased, the compressive strength of the composites increased but air permeability decreased. When the amount of expandable graphite was added at 10 phr or higher, the foam has excellent flame retardation performance. Analysis of the degree of diffraction by X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that as the content of the expandable graphite increased, the crystal peak of the graphite appeared near $2{\theta}=26^{\circ}$.
In this study, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/magnesium hydroxide (EVA/MDH) composites were prepared by electron beam crosslinking. EVA as a matrix resin and MDH as a flame retardant were melt-blended and compression molded to prepare EVA/MDH composites. The prepared EVA/MDH composites were electron beam-irradiated at various absorbed doses of 50~200kGy. The effects of electron beam irradiation on the gel content, tensile strength, elongation-at-break, thermal properties, and flame retardancy of the composites were investigated. The gel content and tensile strength increased, while the elongation-at-break decreased with an increase in the absorbed dose due to the formation of crosslinked network structures. In addition, the thermal stability and flame retardancy improved as the absorbed dose increased. Therefore, the EVA/MDH composites prepared in this study can be used as an insulation material for flame-retardant and heat-resistant wires and cables.

Used polyurethane was chemically degraded by treatments with flame retardants such as tris(3-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). The structure of degraded products (DEP) was analyzed by FT-IR and P-NMR and it turned out to be phosphorus containing oligourethanes. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced by using the degraded products (DEP) as flame retardants. The flammability of recycled rigid polyurethane was investigated. The recycled polyurethane shows a reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the recycled polyurethane foams with various amounts of DEP, the combustion parameters of the foam was measured by a cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of recycled PU shows the same uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.
Two-component polyurethane (PU) flame-retardant coatings were prepared by blending tribromo modified polyesters ($TBAO_s$) and isocyanate.$TBAO_s$ were synthesized by condensation polymerization of tribromoacetic acid, a flame-retardant component, with 1,4-butanediol, adipic acid, and trimethylolpropane. The content of tribromoacetic acid was varied by 10, 20, and 30 wt% for the reaction. Various physical properties of these new flame-retardant coatings were comparable to nonflame-retardant coatings. Coatings with 20 wt% tribromoacetic acid did not burn during the vertical burning test.

Synthesizing octylphosphate(OTP) from phosphorus pentoxide with n-octyl alcohol, octylphosphatethiourea(OTPU) was prepared from OTP with thiourea. After flame retardant finishing OTPU to acrylic fabrics, nylon taffeta and tetron taffeta, the physical properties, such as tear strength and flame retardancy were measured. As the results of the measurement, OTPU was found to be a good flame retardant having softness using to synthetic fibers.
Flame-retardant cotton fabrics were prepared by UV curing of photocurable aqueous formulations of phosphorous-containing methacrylate monomers and 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanone as flame retardants and a photoinitiator respectively, which is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving process. The characterization of the UV-coated cotton fabric was made by ATR, TGA and limited oxygen index measurement. UV cured coating onto cotton fabrics reduced the first thermal decomposition temperature and mass loss as well as increase in the amount of char residue compared with the untreated cotton fabric presumably due to modified thermal decomposition process. The LOI values up to 28.5 and 27.2 were obtained by the UV curing of MMEP and TMEP respectively. The treatment was durable to five laundering cycles, which was more prominent in the case of trifunctional TMEP treatment.

Plasma techniques permit modification of the surface layers of the substrate while maintaining its bulk properties. The use of plasma treatment on textile fibers and fabrics is very limited, however, the limitations, plasma treatments have been used to modify surface properties of textiles. In this study, multifunctional finish was performed by corona discharge technique for surface functionalization. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis(ESCA) was used to determine the ratios of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphor at a 20$\AA$ sampling depth. K/S value and limiting oxygen index(LOI) value were used to obtain information on the effect of the finished fabrics. The mechanism of the flame retardancy was analyzed by the thermogravimetry-and the residue number. In ESCA, relative N1s intensity increased in case of mixtrure. The flame retardancy of the polyester and polyester/cotton fabrics treated with JA-6034 and JA-6050 was found to be operative mainly in the condensed phase mechanism. The multifunctional finish was better effect for the post treated finish agent.
