  • The effect on pretreatments with sugar and blanching on the quality of dried carrot flake were investigated. The color of carrot flakes soaking in sugar solution for 2 mins $(60^{\circ}C,\;30 Brix)$ after water blanching $(100^{\circ}C,\;10 min)$ was similar to fresh carrots and the carrot flakes contained relatively high carotene and $Cu^{++}$ values. The osmotic dehydration with sugar solution $(80^{\circ}C,\;40\;Brix)$ prior to air drying reduced browning reaction and shrinkage. According to sensory test, no significant difference occured, after osmotic dehydration, among air drying. But there was a significant difference occured air drying after water blanching.

  • Supercritical carbondioxide is very effective in removing oils from a variety of seed matrices, devoid of any appreciable amount of phospholipid content. However, the limited solubility of phosphalipids in supercritical carbondioxide leaves behind a potentially valuable by-product in spent seed matrix. Any phospholipid extraction process from the spent matrix must maintain the structure and the quality of phospholipids and must be compatible with the end use of the seed protein meal an animal feed or for human consumption. An initial supercritical carbondioxide extraction of soybean flakes was performed at 32 MPa and $80^{\circ}C$ to extract the oils, leaving the phospholipids in the deflatted soybean flakes, A second step was performed on the defatted soybean flake using $X_{eth}$=0.10, Varying the pressure from 175 MPa to 70.6 MPa and temperature from $60^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. For all supercritical carbon dioxide/ethanol mixture extractions, a fraction rich in phospholipids was obtained. The fractions extracted from defatted soybean flakes were dried and them redissolved in chloroform before HPLC-ELSD analysis. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of phospholipids on soybean seeds, defatted soybean flake, and different extracted phospholipid fractions was carried out, to ascertain the effect of extraction pressure and temperature.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of temperature and retention time of the pressurized steam chamber on the ruminal fermentation characteristics and nutrient degradability of corn flakes in three Korean native Hanwoo cows and three Holstein cows implanted with a ruminal fistula. Corn kernels were categorized into 13 groups based on the chamber temperature (range, $100^{\circ}C-116^{\circ}C$) and retention time (range, 700-950 s). The pH value was lowest in T1 regardless of breed. Propionate concentration was the highest in T2 (p < 0.05). Total-volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration was slightly but not significantly greater in T2 than in other conditions. Dry matter (p < 0.05), starch, and crude protein (p < 0.05) degradability were the highest in T1. At different incubation times and with different breeds, dry matter, starch, and crude protein degradability of corn flakes were the highest in T1. Thus, the present results indicate that the optimal temperature and retention time of the pressurized steam chamber should be $100^{\circ}C-105^{\circ}C$ and 700-720 s.

  • High purity silicon can be obtained from Al-Si alloys by a combination of solvent refining and centrifugation. Silicon purification by crystallization of silicon from an Al-Si alloy melt was carried out using 2N and 4N purity aluminum and 2N purity silicon as raw materials. The effect of the purity of raw materials on the final silicon ingot purity by centrifugation was investigated for an Al-50 wt% Si alloy. Alloys were melted using an electrical resistance furnace, and then poured into a centrifuging apparatus. A silicon lump like foam was obtained after centrifugation and was leached by an acid in order to get pure silicon flakes. Then silicon flakes were melted to make a silicon ingot using an induction furnace. The purities of the silicon flakes and silicon ingot were enhanced significantly compared to those of the raw materials of silicon and aluminum. The silicon ingot made of 4N aluminum and 2N silicon showed the lowest impurities.

  • Proximate composition of whole hemp seed, paste viscosity of whole hemp seed pellets, bulk density, color, compression force, water solubility and absorption index and bowl life of whole hemp seed flakes manufactured by extrusion process were determined to evaluate whole hemp seed as flake additive. Extrusion process conditions were 35% of moisture content and 90, 100 and 110$^{\circ}C$ of barrel temperature. Content of moisture content, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash from whole hemp seed were 5.67${\pm}$0.02%, 25.93${\pm}$0.16%, 28.21${\pm}$0.56% and 7.70${\pm}$0.08%, respectively. The pellets hemp seed at 100 or 110$^{\circ}C$ had higher paste viscosity as compared to those pellet at 90$^{\circ}C$. The bulk density values of all hemp seed flakes were between 0.24 to 0.43 g/mL, depending on the barrel temperatures. The hardness of flake increased with decreasing percentage of hemp seed in flakes. An increase in barrel temperature from 90$^{\circ}C$ to 110$^{\circ}C$ resulted in increase of WSI and decrease of WAI. The bowl life of hemp seed flakes was increased from 5.8 to 15.5 min with the decrease in percentage of hemp seed. The highest overall quality was showed in flake added with 20% of hemp seed.

  • Granitic complex in the Woosanbong area is composed of schistose granite, two-mica granite, biotite granite, porphyritic granite and pink feldspar granite in order of intrusion. In their boundary aspects, the gradational change between porphyritic granite and pink feldspar granite is observed in field relations. All the granites of the complex are classified to quartz monzonite by the modal compositions following Bateman's classification (1961) with the exception of pink feldspar granite which belongs to granite according to the petrographical classification. The first three granites are characterized by highly development of vein and/or lens-like pegmatites in their bodies, and two others contain green hornblende uniquely. These leucocratic two-mica granite shows an unusual character in ratio of muscovite to biotite 1: 0.7 to 1:13, and contains dominantly microcline. The content of muscovite varies in places in the field. Under the polarizing microscope it is revealed that the muscovite flakes occur as the products altered from biotite partly or completely, and it usually associates with chlorite flakes nearby. These features, therefore, suggests that biotite probably has been altered to muscovite and chlorite by hydration during deuteric processes. At the same stage, sericitization of plagioclase by the hydrolytic decomposition, and transformation of orthoclase to microcline may be taken place. Accordingly, it is obviously permissible to consider the two-mica granite as a kind of 'apo-granite' by deuteric alterations during the consolidation of magma.

  • Post-consumer dairy HIPS bottles were gathered and recycled by the following processes; crushing into flakes, chemical treatment for the purpose of elimination aluminium caps, washing, and separation from other plastics, such as PP, PE, plasticized PVC These HIPS flakes were extruded into the chips using a single screw extruder. Recyclate HIPS chips were mixed with fly ash as an additive in the range of 5-50 wt%, which were formed from coal power plant. Recyclate HIPS chips mixed with fly ash were molded to investigate thermal and mechanical properties. Their samples, thermal and mechanical properties were measured via DSC, TGA, UTM, and impact strength analysis. The probable mechanical properties exhibited the range of 5∼30% fly ash contents for their applications.
