  • Knowledge of dynamic characteristics of structural elements often can make difference between success and failure in the design of structure due to resonance effect. In this paper an analytical model of a cantilever beam having midpoint load is considered for structural optimization. This involves creating the geometry which allows parametric study of all design variables. For that purpose optimization of cantilever beam is elaborated in order to find the optimum geometry which minimizes its volume eventually for minimum weight using ANSYS. But such geometry could be obtained by different combinations of width and height, so that it may have the same cross sectional area yet different dynamic behavior. So for optimum safe design, besides minimum volume it should have minimum vibration as well. In order to predict vibration different dynamic analyses are performed simultaneously to solve the eigenvalues problem assuming no damping initially through MATLAB simulations using state space form for modal analysis, which identifies the resonant frequencies and mode shapes belonging to the lowest three modes of vibration. And next by introducing damping effects tip displacement, bending stress and the vertical reaction force at the fixed end is evaluated under some dynamic load of varying frequency, and finally it is discussed how resonance can be avoided for particular design. Investigation of results clearly shows that only structural analysis is not enough to predict the optimum values of dimension for safe design. Potentially this technique will meet maintenance and cost goals of many organizations particularly for the application where dynamic loading is invertible and helps a lot ensuring that the proposed design will be safe for both static and dynamic conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the network characteristics of ports and their performance that is represented by port competitiveness for the port operators. The study employs Social Network Analysis (SNA) to evaluate network characteristics comprising four centrality indices. For this research, data from Containerization International Yearbooks for 2006-2011 is used to analyze the service networks of 20 major liner shipping companies. In SNA, nodes (vertices) in the network are the ports and links (edges) in the network are connections realized by vessel movements, such that the liner shipping network determines the port network. In addition, panel regression analysis has been employed to investigate the relationship between port network characteristics and their performance. The results suggest that the four centrality indices identify the roles of the world's major ports from 2006 to 2011 and that port performance is determined not only by macroeconomic variables and service capabilities but also by the eigenvector centrality of ports in networks.

  • Background: The objective of this retrospective study was to show results from platform-switched narrow-diameter implants in the posterior edentulous region, which we followed up for more than 1 year after functional loading. Methods: Ninety-eight narrow implants were inserted into 66 patients. After healing, fixed implant-supported prostheses were delivered to the patients, and Periotest and radiographic examinations were performed. After the first year of loading, the implant outcome was again evaluated clinically and radiographically using the Periotest analysis. Crestal bone loss and Periotest values (PTVs) were used to evaluate the effect of surgery, prosthesis, implant, and a host-related factor. A general linear model was used to statistically detect variables statistically associated with crestal bone loss and Periotest value. Results: We followed up on the implants over 1 to 4 years after loading; their survival rate was 100 %, and pronounced differences from PTVs were noted among jaw location, bone quality, and loading period. No difference was detected in bone loss among the variables studied. Bone loss after functional loading was $0.14{\pm}0.39mm$. The stability value from the Periotest was $-3.29{\pm}0.50$. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, judicious use of platform-switched narrow implants with a conical connection must be considered an alternative for wide-diameter implants to restore a posterior edentulous region.

  • Surface modification of glutaraldehyde fixed bovine pericardium (GFBP) was successfully carried out with hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives. At first, HA was chemically modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) to introduce hydrazide functional group into the carboxyl group of HA backbone. Then, GFBP was surface modified by grafting HA-ADH to the free aldehyde groups on the tissue and the subsequent HA-ADH hydrogel coating. HA-ADH hydrogels could be prepared through selective crosslinking at low pH between hydrazide groups of HA-ADH and crosslinkers containing succinimmidyl moieties with minimized protein denaturation. When HAADH hydrogels were prepared at low pH of 4.8 in the presence of erythropoietin (EPO) as a model protein, EPO release was continued up to $85\%$ of total amount of loaded EPO for 4 days. To the contrary, only $30\%$ of EPO was released from HA-ADH hydrogels prepared at pH=7.4, which might be due to the denaturation of EPO during the crosslinking reaction. Because the carboxyl groups on the glucuronic acid residues are recognition sites for HA degradation by hyaluronidase, the HA-ADH hydrogels degraded more slowly than HA hydrogels prepared by the crosslinking reaction of divinyl sulfone with hydroxyl groups of HA. Following a two-week subcutaneous implantation in osteopontin-null mice, clinically significant levels of calcification were observed for the positive controls without any surface modification. However, the calcification of surface modified GFBP with HA-ADH and HA-ADH hydrogels was drastically reduced by more than $85\%$ of the positive controls. The anti-calcification effect of HA surface modification was also confirmed by microscopic analysis of explanted tissue after staining with Alizarin Red S for calcium, which followed the trend as observed with calcium quantification.

  • The object of this paper was to investigate the histopatological changes on dog's pulp under cavitation by irradiation of the $CO_2$ laser. The subjects were derived from four dogs, and irradiated 113.23 J/$mm^2$, 283.09 J/$mm^2$, 566.08 J/$mm^2$ in Group I, II, and III respectively. The dogs were sacrificed immediately, 24 hour, 72 hour and 1 week after $CO_2$ laser treatment. For light microscopic examination, routine H-E and PAS stains were employed. For electron microscopic observation, the teeth were fixed in 1% paraformaldehyde and 1% glutaraldehyde, decalcified teeth in 10% EDTA were stained by uranyl acetate and lead citrate. The observation was made with a Hitachi H-500 model electron microscope. The following results were obtained in this study: 1. At the early stage of the experimental sub-groups-immediately, 24 hour, 72 hour samples of Group I, II and III-coagulation necrosis and hyperemia were observed in odontoblastic and subodontoblastic pulpal layer. 2. At the 1 week sub-group of Group I, II, regenerative hyperplasia of the odontoblasts without coagulation necrosis were revealed, in addition to thickened predentin. On he other hand coagulation necrosis and atrophic change accompanying with hyperplasia were found at the 1 week sub-group of Group III. 3. Ultrastructurally, the odontoblasts appeared nuclear degeneration, vacuolar change of cytoplasmic organelles and rupture of plasma membrane at the early stage of the experimental period of all groups. 4. Under spectrohelioscopic examination, regenerative odontobalsts were seen at the 1 week specimens of Group I, II and III. 5. The pulpal response occured at 113-566 J/$mm^2$. The pathologic change of pulp tissue occured at the early experimental period but regeneration of odontoblasts could be seen after 1 week.

  • In this paper, we experimented to find out how the number of convolution layers, the size, and the number of kernels affect the CNN. In addition, the general CNN was also tested for analysis and compared with the CNN used in the experiment. The neural networks used for the analysis are based on CNN, and each experimental model is experimented with the number of layers, the size, and the number of kernels at a constant value. All experiments were conducted using two layers of fully connected layers as a fixed. All other variables were tested with the same value. As the result of the analysis, when the number of layers is small, the data variance value is small regardless of the size and number of kernels, showing a solid accuracy. As the number of layers increases, the accuracy increases, but from above a certain number, the accuracy decreases, and the variance value also increases, resulting in a large accuracy deviation. The number of kernels had a greater effect on learning speed than other variables.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to determine outcome of ischemic stroke patients in the anterior circulation treated with endovascular treatment (EVT) with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) versus EVT alone group. Methods : A systemic literature review was performed using online database from January 2004 to January 2017. Primary outcomes were successful recanalization seen on finial angiography and good outcome at three months. Secondary outcomes were mortality and the development of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (S-ICH) after the procedure. A fixed effect model was used when heterogeneity was less than 50%. Egger's regression test was used to assess publication bias. Results : Five studies were included for final analysis. Between EVT with IVT and EVT alone group, successful recanalization (odds ratio [OR] 1.467, p=0.216), good clinical outcome at three months (OR 1.199, p=0.385), mortality (OR 0.776, p=0.371), and S-ICH (OR 1.820, p=0.280) did not differ significantly. Egger's regression intercept with 95% confidence interval (CI) was 1.99 (95% CI -2.91 to 6.89) in successful recanalization and -0.27 (95% CI -6.35 to 5.80) in good clinical outcome, respectively. Conclusion : The two treatment modalities, EVT with IVT and EVT alone, could be comparable in treating acute anterior circulation stroke. Studies to find specific beneficiary group for EVT alone, without primary IVT, are needed further.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of genetic differences in the bovine leptin gene and milk yield, reproduction, body condition score (BCS), and plasma glucose level in Iranian Holstein cows. In total, two hundred and thirty eight cows were used and genotyped for a restricted fragment length polymorphism at the leptin gene locus. Two genotypes, AA and AB, have been distinguished which have the frequencies of 0.89 and 0.11, respectively. The genotypes were distributed according to the Hardy - Weinberg equilibrium ($x^2$ = 0.733). During the first 12 wk of lactation, milk yield and composition, live weight, BCS and plasma glucose were measured in 50 cows. Data were analyzed based on a repeated measures ANOVA. During this period, milk yield and composition, live weight, BCS and plasma glucose level were similar among the genotypes. The first cumulative 60-d milk yield, 305-d milk yield, days to first breeding, days open and days from first breeding to conception using previous lactation records were also analyzed using Standard Least Square within mixed models. Fixed effects were year, season, parity and age at calving, and sire. For the reproductive traits the cumulative first 60-d milk yield was also added to the model. Animal was fitted as a random effect. A significant association was detected between the RFLP-AB genotype and 305-d milk yield (p<0.05). The first 60-d cumulative milk yield was similar for the two genotypes (p = 0.21) and tended to be higher in the heterozygous cows. The heterozygous genotypes at the above mentioned locus had a trend to better reproductive performance than the homozygous. The results demonstrate that the RFLP B-allele can yield a higher 305-d milk production with a trend to better reproductive performance.

  • A solar photovoltaic system is composed of a module mounting structure, supporting trunk, and a control unit that supplies generated electrical power to an external power grid or a load. The efficiency of the system depends on the incident solar light, so the mounting structure is installed to face the sun. However, because the sun always moves, systems that track the sun have better efficiency than fixed systems. The structure experiences wind pressure, snow load, seismic load, and structure weight. The wind pressure has the most serious effect on the structure. The pressure was obtained using finite element method for various gaps between modules and angles between the panel and the ground. The wind pressure is lowest when the gap is zero, and it increases with the inclination angle. Based on the results, a mounting structure module was designed.
