This study analyzes the effects of caring for grandchildren on Korean grandparents' health, using the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from 2006 to 2012. We investigate how caregiving is provided and analyze the effects of caregiving on grandparents' physical health, mental health, and health-related behaviors. As elderly people's health is generally frail, it is unclear whether the provision of childcare affects their health negatively. We control for the endogeneity of caregiving by an individual fixed effect (FE) model and instrumental variable-fixed effect (FE-IV) models. Using these models, we determine the endogeneity of caregiving and show that the significant effects of caregiving on health disappear as we control for endogeneity in the FE and FE-IV models. Even after controlling for endogeneity, we find that caregiving increases the probability of feeling pain as well as the number of different types of pain. Furthermore, caregiving increases the probability of restrictions on daily activities because of pain. On the other hand, caregiving reduces the symptoms of depression. In relation to health-related behaviors, caregiving reduces the probability of physical exercise and regular meals. Our results imply that although caregiving has a positive effect on mental health, the increase in physical pain and in non-healthy behaviors may lead to a deterioration of the caregiver's long-term health, which in turn may increase the medical costs of the elderly. Potential policy alternatives are discussed in the paper.
The foundation of offshore wind energy system is generally assumed to be fixed-ended in system analysis for the convenience of calculation and, correspondingly, it might lead a conservative design. If soil-foundation interaction get involved with the analysis, the system characteristics such as natural frequency, shear force, moment and displacement are expected to differ from those of fixed-ended case. In this study, the analysis have been conducted to identify how the response of offshore wind turbine varies upon considering the foundation flexibility with soil-foundation interaction. The model taking account of the flexibility of foundation was compared with fixed-ended model at the seabed. The flexibilities of foundation were obtained by coupled spring model at the seabed and Winkler Spring Model with soil depth. As a result, the first mode of the whole system with the Winkler Spring Model was decreased relative to that with the fixed-ended model. The results showed that the effect of foundation flexibility should be considered when designing the offshore wind energy system.

The Educational Restitution Rate is an important parameter that determines the quality of university education. This paper analyzed data from 148 private universities over the 10 years from 2009 to 2018 using data mining techniques in Korea. A significant causal relationship is detected in the fixed effect model as a result of the panel estimation. And the scale of faculty expansion and fund management, which are the university evaluation indicators, and the size of basic funds, respectively, have a positive effect on the ERR, which is within the confidence interval. In the analysis, the more private universities improve the tuition dependence rate, the more decisively positive affecting ERR. As a result of nonparametric regression estimation, when the faculty expansion ratio is reinforced, the effect of economies of scale is detected in some sections, the improvement of the tuition dependence rate, and the result value is generated through the improvement that results are derived at a certain point in time. We hope that the university based on this study can be a basic Indicators for the diagnosis of basic competencies and policy of student-centered education.
Recently, the use of antibiotics to improve animal productivity in livestock industry was strictly restricted. For these reason, probiotics have been regarded as one of promising materials for an antibiotic alternative. In this study, we investigated how the probiotics influences on the performance of broiler chicken via meta-analysis. Eighteen researches from 1997 to 2010 were used for meta-analysis. The standard summary effects were calculated via fixed effect model and random effect model (Borenstein et al., 2009). Heterogeneity was calculated by using the Cochran's Q statistics (Kook et al., 2009) and publication bias was calculated via Egger's regression (Lee et al., 2011). In fixed model average daily gain, body weight serum protein content and cecal LAB showed positive effect significantly. Feed intake, feed/gain and serum cholesterol showed significant negative effect. In serum triglyceride, negative effect was found but significance was not shown. In random model, average daily gain body weight and cecal LAB showed positive effects with significance and feed/gain and serum cholesterol represented significant negative effects. Publication bias was found only in feed/gain.
The purpose of this study was to develop age-biomass model in Chungnam region containing random effect. To develop the biomass model by species and tree component, data for Pinus densiflora in central region is collected to 30 plots (150 trees). The mixed model were used to fixed effect in the age-biomass relation for Pinus densiflora, with random effect representing correlation of survey area were obtained. To verify the evaluation of the model for random effect, the akaike information criterion (abbreviated as, AIC) was used to calculate the variance-covariance matrix, and residual of repeated data. The estimated variance-covariance matrix, and residual were -1.0022, 0.6240, respectively. The model with random effect (AIC=377.2) has low AIC value, comparison with other study relating to random effects. It is for this reason that random effect associated with categorical data were used in the data fitting process, the model can be calibrated to fit the Chungnam region by obtaining measurements. Therefore, the results of this study could be useful method for developing biomass model using random effects by region.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate mixed model of dbh-height relation containing random effect. Data were obtained from a survey site for Quercus variabilis in Gangwon region and remeasured the same site after three years. The mixed model were used to fixed effect in the dbh-height relation for Quercus variabilis, with random effect representing correlation of survey period were obtained. To verify the evaluation of the model for random effect, the akaike information criterion (abbreviated as, AIC) was used to calculate the variance-covariance matrix, and residual of repeated data. The estimated variance-covariance matrix, and residual were -0.0291, 0.1007, respectively. The model with random effect (AIC = -215.5) has low AIC value, comparison with model with fixed effect (AIC = -154.4). It is for this reason that random effect associated with categorical data is used in the data fitting process, the model can be calibrated to fit repeated site by obtaining measurements. Therefore, the results of this study could be useful method for developing model using repeated measurement.

Studies on very large offshore structures are increasing owing to the development of deep sea, large-scale energy generation using ocean resources, and so on. The enlargement of offshore structures makes the hydroelastic effect and low natural frequency related responses important. Numerical analyses and model tests for hydroelastic and higher-order springing responses of fixed cylindrical structures are conducted in this study. The panel methods with and without the hydroelastic effect with shell elements, and the Morison analysis method with beam elements are applied. To observe the hydroelastic effect for structural strength, two structures are considered: bottom-fixed cylindrical structures with high and low bending stiffnesses, respectively. The surge motions at the top of the structure and bending stresses on the structure are observed under regular and irregular wave conditions. The regular wave conditions are generated considering the ratios of the cylindrical outer diameter to the wave lengths, and keeping the wave steepness constant. The model tests are performed in the three-dimensional ocean engineering basin in the KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering). From the numerical and experimental results, in which the hydroelastic responses are only observed in the case of the structure with a low bending stiffness, it is confirmed that the hydroelastic responses are highly dependent on the structural stiffness. Additionally, the higher-order phenomenon on the specified wave condition is analyzed by observing the higher-order springing responses when the incident wave frequency or its multiples with the high wave height coincides with the natural frequency of the structure.
The amount of solar irradiation obtained by a photovoltaic (PV) solar panel is the major factor determining the power generated by a PV system, and the array tilt angle is critical for maximizing panel radiation acquisition. There are three types of PV systems based on the manner of setting the array tilt angle: fixed, semi-fixed, and tracking systems. A fixed system cannot respond to seasonal solar altitude angle changes, and therefore cannot absorb the maximum available solar radiation. The tracking system continually adjusts the tilt angle to absorb the maximum available radiation, but requires additional cost for equipment, installation, operation, and maintenance. The semi-fixed system is only adjusted periodically (usually seasonally) to obtain more energy than a fixed system at an overall cost that is less than a tracking system. To maximize semi-fixed system efficiency, determining the optimal tilt angle adjustment schedule are required. In this research, we conducted a simulation to derive an optimal operation schedule for a semi-fixed system in Seoul, Korea (latitude $37.5^{\circ}$). We implemented a solar radiation acquisition model and PV genereation model on MATLAB. The optimal operation schedule was derived by changing the number of tilt angle adjustments throughout a year using a Dynamic Algorithm. The results show that adjusting the tilt angle 4 times a year was the most appropriate. and then, generation amount of PV system increased 2.80% compared with the fixed system. This corresponds to 99% compared to daily adjustment model. This increase would be quite valid as the PV system installation area increased.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze factors affecting the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives in South Korea using panel data. This paper utilizes linear or GLS regression models such as pooled OLS model, fixed effects model, and random effects model to estimate affecting factors of the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives. After reviewing various tests, we eventually select random effects model. The results, based on panel data between 2013 and 2018 year and 64 fisheries cooperatives, indicate that capital and area dummy variables have positive effects and employment has negative effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives as predicted. However, debt are opposite with our predictions. Specifically, it turns out that debt has positive effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives although it has been increased. Additionally, this paper shows that the member of confreres does not show any significant effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives in South Korea. This study is significant in that it analyzes the major factors influencing changes in the net income that have not been conducted recently for the fisheries cooperatives by region and industry.
Purpose: Because the energy consumption, economic growth and logistics development are still the heated topics which have attracted many scholars' interests. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze the effect of logistics development on the economic growth, explore the effect of the economic growth on energy consumption and to discuss the effect of the logistics development on energy intensity. Research design, data and methodology: Using the panel data over the period 2000-2017 of 156 countries and employing the country & year fixed effect model, system generalized method moments and random effect model, the empirical analyses of this propositions are performed. Results: The empirical findings present that the logistics development is positively related to the economic growth. The energy consumption in the t-1 period and economic growth are positively related to the current energy consumption. The logistics development is negatively related to the energy intensity. Meanwhile, the empirical findings also indicate that there is a great difference about these effects among the four sub-samples (low income 18 countries, low middle income 49 countries, upper middle income 44 countries, high income 49 countries). Conclusions: Based on the evidences in this paper provided, we can find that these variables can affect each other.
