Tuna fisheries were applied to an integrated ecosystem-based fishery risk assessment method using indexes of target species status, inhabited species in a target ecosystem, habitat quality and socio-economic benefit of affected fisheries. This study suggested more effective and efficient management measures to break away from traditional management methods, such as limitation of catch and fishing effort. The results presented that the objective risk index (ORIS) on sustainability of bigeye and yellowfin tunas by purse seine fishery was estimated high due to the high catch ratio of small fishes. The ORIs of biodiversity (ORIB) and habitat quality (ORIH) of purse seine fishery were also estimated at a high level from using fish-aggregating devices (FAD). However, due to skipjack tuna's high catches, the ORI of socio-economic benefit (ORIE) was estimated at a very low level. Due to the high bycatch rate, ORIB was high, and ORIS and ORIH were evaluated at a low level in longline fishery. Due to strengthern of fishing restrictions and increase of fishing costs, the ORIE was assessed to be very high. The ecosystem risk index (ERI) for two tuna fisheries was assessed low, but the overall FAD management by purse seine fishery is necessary at the ecosystem level.

This study aims to analyze the household economic behavior of salt farmers participants in Salt Business Empowerment Program (Pugar) including of salt production, work flow, household revenue, the behavior of consumption of food and non-food items and the welfare level. This research followed a survey method by engaging 32 household farmers as participants. The findings revealed that the empowerment program was carried out through the technical assistance of salting production and the assistance of equipment and technology from Thread of Screw Filter and geoisolators to improve the quality of salt. The problems come when the marketing of salt is still limited to the collectors of salt which led to the price of salt level, manufacturers have not remained stable. Household revenue sources for some salt farmers also come from non-salt pond business activities. Farmer household revenue can be used to meet staple food consumption and non-food staple consumption. Based on the indicators of family welfare, households participating in the empowerment program were group into the category of prosperous families. In order to stabilize the price of salt at the producer level, government intervention in the people's salt trading system is needed.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss possibilities of applying growth curve models, such as Logistic, Log-Logistic, Log-Normal, Gompertz and Weibull, to three specific technology areas of Fishery Science and Technology in the process of measuring their technology level between Korea and countries with the state-of-the art level. Technology areas of hazard control of organism, environment restoration, and fish cluster detect were selected for this study. Expert panel survey was conducted to construct relevant panel data for years of 2013, 2016, and a future time of approaching the theoretical maximum technology level. The size of data was 70, 70 and 40 respectively. First finding is that estimation of shape and location parameters of each model was statistically significant, and lack-of-fit test using estimated parameters was statistically rejected for each model, meaning all models were good enough to apply for measuring technology levels. Second, three models other than Pearl and Gompertz seemed very appropriate to apply despite the fact that previous case studies have used only Gompertz and Pearl. This study suggests that Weibull model would be a very valid candidate for the purpose. Third, fish cluster detect technology level is relatively higher for both Korea and a country with the state-of-the-art among three areas as of 2013. However, all three areas seem to be approaching their limits(highest technology level point) until 2020 for countries with the state-of-the-art. This implies that Korea might have to speed up her research activities in order to catch up them prior to 2020. Final suggestion is that future study may better apply various and more appropriate models respectively considering each technology characteristics and other factors.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the extent of fisheries resource rebuilding and other economic effects on coastal gill-net fishery as a result of the Korean vessel buy-back program using with-without analysis based on methods estimating sustainable yields for all species caught by coastal gill-net fishery. Based on the results of with-without analysis, maximum sustainable yields (MSY) of all species caught by coastal gill-net fishery have been increased by the Korean vessel buy-back program. In addition, profits per vessel of maximum economic yield (MEY) of the species have been improved by the program. Further, yields and a producer surplus per vessel under an equilibrium of open access (OA) have increased because of the program. In detail, first of all, at the MSY level, the vessel buy-back program has led to about 21% fisheries resource recovery, and at the MEY level, it has led to about a 19% resource recovery. Secondly, at the MEY level and the OA level, the producer surplus per vessel has been increased by about 24% and 22% respectively by the vessel buy-back program.
The purpose of this study is to assess the sanitation level and purchase behavior of fishery products, and to identify management conditions of bad smell from cooking fish at home as perceived by housewives in a metropolitan area. Frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, and cross-tabulation analysis were employed as statistical techniques for current study. Total 270 were collected from housewives. The statistical variables included the kinds of cooking oil and the age of housewives, the types of hoods for fish roasting, the types of covers for fish grills, the number of family, the ventilation methods, and the maintenance of kitchen utensils based on family incomes, and they showed statistically significant differences(p<.05). Furthermore, the housewives whose sanitary cognition level for fishery products was high, the housewives whose level of purchase attitude was relatively high, and the housewives who utilized specialized kitchen utensils demonstrated statistically significant differences(p<.05). It resulted from the assessment of such actual conditions as difference of culinary environment according to the sanitation level of fishery products, the level of purchase attitude, and whether the housewives utilized special kitchen utensils or not. The more efforts were proved from those who had the intentions for improvement of an amenable culinary environment at homes, according to the higher income obtainers, the smaller nuclear family, the younger generation, whether the housewives utilized special kitchen utensils or not, and those who had the higher sanitary cognition level of fishery products. The above results were derived from an individual lifestyle or a dietary lifestyle, but eventually this seems to be related with the propensity and values hierarchy of individuals.
This study examines a business survey on the utilization of fishery by-products with the aim to assess the feasibility of incorporating these by-products into various industries. The research involved surveying 312 biocompanies across the country and conducting an empirical analysis based on the collected data. South Korea, a leading seafood-producing country with a developed seafood processing industry, provides conditions necessary to utilize seafood by-products as raw materials for the marine bioindustry. Among the surveyed biocompanies, 38.5% expressed their intention to engage in industrial activities involving the use of fishery by-products in the future, indicating a significant level of interest within the bioindustry in utilizing marine and fishery by-products. Companies showed interest in diverse materials, such as scales, fish bones, skin, and kelp holdfast beyond those currently defined under the Fisheries By-products Recycling Promotion Act (officially unnamed, 2021). This suggests a need for improvements in the regulatory framework to accommodate these diverse biomaterials. Furthermore, we propose enhancing the efficiency of fishery by-product utilization by focusing on regional specialization in marine bioindustry. This involves utilizing existing legal framework for upcycling fishery by-products and fostering a regionally specialized marine bioindustry.
The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue from the Paris Climate Change Accord in 2015. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 4.8% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries rarely carried out consistently. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is necessary as a first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major offshore fisheries such as offshore gillnet fishery, offshore longline fishery, offshore jigging fishery and anchovy drag net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emissions from the fisheries using the Life Cycle Assessment method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for the LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas as well. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.
The aim of this study is to investigate influence of moon light to the fishing of squid jigging fishery in the southwest Atlantic Ocean based on analyses of date taken from 127 vessels in Falkland fishing ground by squid jigging fishery from 2010 to 2015. Catch and CPUE were analyzed between the new moon and full moon phases. Catches of the new moon phase were higher than those of the full moon phase by 7.6% and CPUE expressed in mt/day-vessels and mt/line-day were also higher by 18.2%, 18.2% respectively. However, as a result of statistical analysis at a significance level of p > 0.05, no significant statistical differences in catch, mt/day-vessels and mt/line-day were found between the new moon and the full moon as a result of statistical analysis at a significance level of p > 0.05.
The fishing industry has a negative effect on the environment due to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the high use of fossil fuels, the destruction of underwater ecosystems by bottom trawls, reduction in resources by fishing, and altered ecosystem diversity. GHG emissions from fisheries were discussed at the Canc$\acute{u}$n meeting in Mexico in 1992 and are part of the Kyoto protocol in 2005. However, few studies have investigated the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries. To find a way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries, quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from the Korean fishery industry is needed. Therefore, this study investigated the GHG emissions from the Korean Danish seine fishery using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for the LCA analysis. The fuel-use coefficient of the fishery is also calculated. The GHG emissions from the representative fish caught by the Danish seine fishery are considered and the GHG emissions for the edible weight of fishes are calculated, considering consumption in different areas and different slaughtering processes. The results will help to understand the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.
Over time, the import of seafood has been increased causing a corresponding increase in recall and recall costs of the fishery on the threshold level. In order to reduce recall costs and to ensure the safety of imported seafood, a moveable lab and its supporting software specialized in seafood inspection were designed. A new fishery quarantine support system software, ‘M-LIMS’ is proposed to strengthen an inspection and quarantine process for the imported seafood at the local level. This new software reads data from an external inspection equipment when it is connected to a USB or RS232 cable inspection equipment on a regular basis to save a report sent to the server after its use. Reading was possible by reading records on a central server. Each time users can check own data through a mobile device.
