The characteristics of anaerobic biodegradability by food waste (음식물쓰레기의 혐기성 생분해도 특성)

  • This study was aimed to evaluate biodegradability for various food waste using anaerobic batch digestion. In the anaerobic biodegradability study of each food waste according to occurrence source, the cumulative methane productions of water melon and melon were 375, and 354ml and that of cucumber, fresh cabbage, radish, sprouted bean were 366, 364, 374, 384, 355ml and that of noodle, boiled rice and fish were 432, 409 and 477ml $CH_{4/g}$ VS add, respectively. And methane yield rate was about 84.1~97.2%. The reaction rate coefficiency(k) was $0.00495~0.2022day^{-1}$.

  • An advanced mobile technology is described for saturating water with oxygen. The MTR(Mass Transfer Reactor) is 2~10 times more effective in dissolving oxygen in water compared to most other systems used in aquaculture, because it can generate extremely small(0.005~0.05mm) bubbles. New fish farming facilities could make use of this technology to build deeper ponds for raising multiple species with optimized conditions for DO(dissolved oxygen), food, light, etc. The proposed technology offers higher DO levels with minimal operating costs. It is easy to use and maintain, with a high reproducibility. Accordingly, the MTR can be industrially applied in the treatment of fish waste and reduction of water consumption during fish farming.

A Study on Reduction of Food Waste (음식물 쓰레기 소멸화에 관한 연구)

  • The physical and chemical transformation and reduction degree of food waste were investigated in a food waste reduction machine using thermophilic bacteria. The first operation of the reduction machine for grain, vegetables, fishes and flesh wastes proceeded during three weeks. The first and second reduction percentages of the wastes were 98.3% and 93.2%, respectively. The residue of food waste was composed of fruits, fish, and vegetables. The temperature distribution of the reduction machine ranged between 30 and 6$0^{\circ}C$ appropriate for growth of thermophilic bacteria. At initial stage the pH in the reduction machine decreased with organic acids produced, but increased as the organic acids decomposed by different thermophilic bacteria. In the reduction machine, the moisture content of the food waste was reduced from 80-90% to 10-20% after 24 hours, and the salinity of residue was 0.29% after the second operation. The degree of odor was most high between 2 and 4 hours.

  • This study was focused on the treatment of thickened sewage sludge. General bacteria and E. coli were disinfected over 99% and organic compounds were decomposed after irradiation. It was suggested that this process can be an alternative for digestion Process. The moisture content in sludge was decreased over 10% (w/w) and the coagulation of sludge particles was enhanced by irradiation at the dose of 15 kGy and addition of sea waste resource (star-fish) as a dewatering aid.

Degradation Characteristics of A Novel Multi-Enzyme-Possessing Bacillus licheniformis TK3-Y Strain for the Treatment of High-Salinity Fish Wastes and Green Seaweeds

  • To reutilize fisheries waste, we isolated a bacterial strain from a coastal area located in Busan. It was identified as Bacillus licheniformis TK3-Y. Using plate assay and 500-mL flask experiments, we found that the isolate simultaneously possessed cellulolytic, proteolytic, and lipolytic activities with salt tolerance. 10% (v/v) inoculums, were used to examine the biodegradation characteristics of the TK3-Y strain on carboxymethylcellulose, skim milk, and olive oil media. The optimum conditions for pH, temperature, agitation speed, and NaCl concentration on each 1% substrate were 6, $50^{\circ}C$, 180 rpm, and 17.5%, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the TK3-Y strain showed 1.07 U/mL cellulolytic, 1,426 U/mL proteolytic, and 6.45 U/mL lipolytic activities. Each enzyme was stable within a range of 17.5-35% NaCl. Therefore, the salt tolerance ability of strain TK3-Y was superior to other related strains. In degradation of a mixed medium containing all three substrates, both the cellulolytic and proteolytic activities were somewhat lower than those on each single substrate, while the lipolytic activity was somewhat higher. From the above results, the TK3-Y strain appears to be a good candidate for use in the efficient treatment of fisheries waste in which components are not collected separately.

Influence of Culture Media Formulated with Agroindustrial Wastes on the Antimicrobial Activity of Lactic Acid Bacteria

  • The discarding of wastes into the environment is a significant problem for many communities. Still, food waste can be used for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) growth. Here, we evaluated three growth media equivalent to de Mann Rogosa Sharpe (MRS), using apple bagasse, yeast waste, fish flour, forage oats, and cheese whey. Cell-free supernatants of eight LAB strains were tested for antimicrobial activity against nine indicator microorganisms. The supernatants were also evaluated for protein content, reducing sugars, pH, and lactic acid concentration. Cell-free supernatants from fish flour broth (FFB) LAB growth were the most effective. The strain Leuconostoc mesenteroides PIM5 presented the best activity in all media. L. mesenteroides CAL14 completely inhibited L. monocytogenes and strongly inhibited Bacillus cereus (91.1%). The strain L. mesenteroides PIM5 consumed more proteins (77.42%) and reducing sugars (56.08%) in FFB than in MRS broth (51.78% and 30.58%, respectively). Culture media formulated with agroindustrial wastes positively improved the antimicrobial activity of selected LAB, probably due to the production of antimicrobial peptides or bacteriocins.

Factors related to School Food Waste in High School Students in Gyeongnam (경남 사천지역 고등학생들의 학교급식 잔반에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to identify factors affecting school food waste generation using a questionnaire. The subjects were 254 high school students (male; 156, female; 98) in Sacheon, Gyeongnam divided into three groups of low (${\leq}1/week$), moderate (2~3/week), and high (${\geq}4/week$) according to the frequencies of food waste. The questionnaires consisted of general characteristics, anthropometric values, dietary habits, health-related behaviors, self-perceptions of food waste, snacking patterns, and nutrition knowledge. The main reasons behind food waste were 'too much food' in the low (20.9%) and moderate (32.2%) groups, and 'no appetite' in the high group (p<0.01). The main types of food waste were rice (44.2%) > fish (18.6%) > vegetables (14.0%) in the low group, rice (54.2%) > Kimchi/vegetables (15.3%) in the moderate group, rice (56.0%) > vegetables (20.0%) > Kimchi (16.0%) in the high group (p<0.01). School food waste was significantly affected by age, gender, monthly allowance, school grade, weight, BMI, regularity of meals, time of meals, type of breakfast, starting age of smoking, and cost for snacking.

  • The characterization of mixed microorganisms that have activities of protein- and lipid-degradation were studied to reduce marine pollution by fish wastes and to utilize them again as feeds or fertilizers. There was no mutual inhibition among the microorganisms. The pH and temperature for the mixed culture were found to be 7 and $32^{\circ}C$, respectively. The fish waste were started to degrade after one day, and were almost degraded after 4 days without any odor.

  • Ammonia in aquaculture system may lead to suppression of fish growth, sublethal histopathological changes, and even death thus ammonia is considered toxic to fish. Application of Side Scan Sonar to Disposed Material Analysis at the Bottom of Coastal Water and River

  • Due to the growth of population and industrial development at the coastal cities, there has been much increase in necessity to effective control of the wastes into the coastal water and river. The amount of disposal at those waters has been increased rapidly ana it is necessary for us to track of it in order to keep the waterway safe and the water clean. The investigation and research in terms of water quality in these regions have been conducted frequently but the systematic survey of the disposed wastes at the bottom was neglected and/or minor. In this study we surveyed the status of disposed waste distribution at the bottom of coastal water and river from the scanned images. The intensity of sound received by the side scan sonar tow fish from the sea floor provides information as to the general distribution and characteristics of the superficial wastes. The port and starboard side scanned images produced from two arrays of transducers borne on a tow fish connected by tow cable to a tug boat have the area with width of 22m~112m and band of 44m~224m. All data are displayed in real-time on a high-resolution color display ($1280{\times}1024$ pixels) together with position information by DGPS. From the field measurement and analysis of the recorded images, we could draw the location and distribution of bottom disposals. Furthermore, we could make a database system which might be useful for navigation and fundamental for planning the waste reception and process control system.
