Two-month feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the optimum dietary protein level and energy to protein ratio in fat cod (Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et STARKS). The fish averaging 29 g were fed with one of the isocaloric diets containing 30, 40, 50 or $60\%$ of protein, or with one of the isoproteic diets containing 9, 10, 11 or 12 of available energy/protein (E/P) ratio. Weight gain and feed efficiency increased significantly with dietary protein level up to $50\%$, then decreased with $60\%$ protein diet (P<0.05). Daily protein intake increased significantly with dietary protein level, whereas protein efficiency ratio decreased with dietary protein level (P<0.05). Second order polynomial regression analyses of percent weight gain and daily protein intake may indicate that the adequate dietary protein level is $45\%$ and daily protein requirement per 100g fish is 1.5g for maximal growth. Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency from fish led the diet containing 12 of E/P ratio were significantly higher than those from fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Daily feed or protein intake from fish fed the diet containing 12 of E/P ratio was significantly lower than those from fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Daily lipid intake increased significantly with dietary E/P ratio (P<0.05).
We evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of scoria on growth performances and apparent protein digestibility in juvenile parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus and olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In experiment, parrot fish at initial average weight of $7.6{\pm}0.01g(mean{\pm}SD)$ were divided into 9 groups(three groups per dietary treatment) and fed one of three isonitrogenous diets which contained 0%, 1% and 2% of scoria, respectively. Experiment was conducted with juvenile olive flounder to demonstrate the improved apparent digestibility of protein found in the experiment. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain different levels of scoria: Diet 1(control), 0% scoria; diet 2, 1% scoria; diet 3, 2% scoria; diet 4, 3% scoria; and diet 5, 4% scoria. After 9 weeks of feeding trial(Exp), no significant differences were observed on growth performances between Scoria 2% and the control group. However, the growth was significantly lower in scoria 1% compared to that of the control group. Hematological parameters were not affected by the supplementation of scoria. Interestingly, apparent protein digestibility was improved by dietary supplementation of scoria both in parrot fish and olive flounder. The findings suggest that dietary supplementation of 2-3% scoria is optimum levels in order to improve the protein digestibility in the diets for juvenile parrot fish and olive flounder.

In order to identify hard distinct 12 fish species(shiba shrimp Metapenaeus joyneri, fleshy shrimp Penaeus orientalis, ridgetail prawn Palaemon carinicauda, yellow croaker Pseudosciaena manchurica, croaker Niber albiflora, Colichthyes fragilis, brown sole Limanda herzensteini, frog flounder Pleuronichthys cornutrs, Areliscus rhomaleus, stone flounder Kareius bicoloratus, harvest fish Pampus argenteus, flag fish Goniistius zonatus) by seeing with naked eye in Kunsan coastal area, sarcoplasmic protein in the supernatant was used for isoelectric focusing. For getting supernatant, fish muscle tissue was blended with two times deionized water and centrifuged (at $4^{\circ}C$, 12,000rpm for 15min). Isoelectric focusing of sarcoploasmic protein carried out on a LKB Multiphor II using polyacrylamide gel plate (2mm thickness, pH $3.5~10^{\circ}C$, pH 5~8 gradient, at $10^{\circ}C$ for 1.5, 3 hours). In case of uncertain protein pattern, pH gradient was modified to narrow pH gradiet, and excuted 2-D electrophoresis using conventional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Most of fishes except yellow croaker and Collichthyes fragilis were distingushed by isoelectric focusing. The protein maps of 2-D electrophoresis for analyzing two protein bands at aimilar positions(pH 5, 6) between the two fish species showed the diffeences of the estimated molecular weights, 11,700(pH5.0) and 87,000(pH6.0)
Background: To minimize the use of antibiotics and to obtain a more sustainable fish culture and aquaculture industry, development of alternative natural source of immunostimulant to replace antibiotic in aquafeed is highly needed. Objective: Dietary inclusion effect of yacon (YC), ginger (GG), and blueberry (BB) on growth, body composition, and disease resistance of black rockfish against Vibrio anguillarum was compared to ethoxyquin (EQ). Methods: Four hundred eighty juvenile (an initial weight of 4.2 g) fish were randomly distributed into 12 of 50 L flowthrough tanks (forty fish per tank). Four experimental diets were prepared; the control (Con) diet with 0.01% EQ inclusion, and YC, GG, and BB diets at 1% each additive inclusion. Each additive was included into the experimental diets at the expense of wheat flour. Each diet was assigned to triplicate tanks of fish and hand-fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of 8-week feeding trial, 20 fish from each tank fish were artificially infected by intraperitoneal injection with 0.1 mL of culture suspension of pathogenic V. anguillarum containing 3.3 × 106 cfu/mL respectively. Fish were monitored for the following 8 days after V. anguillarum infection and dead fish were removed every 6 h for the first 4 days and 12 h for the rest of the study. Results: Weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish fed the YC diet was higher than those of fish fed all other diets. However, feed consumption, protein efficiency ratio, and protein retention was not affected by dietary additive. Moisture, crude protein, and crude lipid content of the whole body of fish were affected by dietary additive. Analysis of the Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that survival of fish fed the YC, BB, and GG diets was higher than the Con diet. Conclusion: Oral administration of YC can improve not only weight gain, SGR, and FER of black rockfish, but lower mortality of rockfish at occurrence of V. anguillarum.

To prepare the edible film based on fish protein, the optimal conditions for extracting soluble protein from Alaska pollack ( Theragra chalcogramma) and mackerel (Scomber japonious) muscle were defined. The effects of protein concentration, pH and temperature of protein solution on the physical properties of films were also investigated, Contents of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash in Alaska pollack muscle were 79.6, 18.2, 0.6 and $1.2\%$, respectively. Contents of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash in mackerel muscle were 69,1, 20.1, 9,5 and $1.3\%$, respectively. Both soluble protein contents extracted from Alaska pollack and mackerel were the highest at pH 12.0, and then un 2.0, 11.0. But they were extracted a little at neutral range. forward the recovery yield of protein by controlling isoelectric point was the highest at pH 4.8 ($79.8\%$) for Alaska pollack and at pH 5.0 ($64.1\%$) for mackerel, For the preparation of protein films from both Alaska pollack and mackerel, the most effective conditions of film forming solution were achieved, after supplied fish protein 4 g (glycerol 1,6 g) in 100 mL of distilled water, by adjusted to pH 10.0 and then heated at $90^{\circ}C$.

Data of 15 multiparous Holstein cows kept at Ibaraki Prefectural Animal Experiment Station were collected from 10 weeks prepartum to 20 weeks postpartum. Cows were assigned randomly to a soybean meal (S8M) diet or a fish meal (FM) diet from 4 weeks before expected calving date to 20 weeks postpartum. Each diet was formulated to contain similar amounts of CP, ADF, and NDF. In the FM diet, 2.5 and 5% of fish meal were supplemented as total mixed rations in prepartum and postpartum periods, respectively. Compared to the SBM diet, undegraded intake protein (UIP) and Met were higher in the FM diet, but Lys was low. Body weight and dry matter intake were not affected by supplemental FM, and dry matter intake increased by 6 weeks postpartum and maintained constant after 7 weeks postpartum. Cows in the FM diet remained high milk production during the experimental period, but milk yield in the SBM diet decreased gradually after 6 weeks postpartum. Supplemental FM increased milk yield and protein yield from 10 to 20 weeks postpartum when FM intake was 1.19 kg/d, although milk protein was not improved. There were no significance differences in fat content and fat yield between FM and SBM diets. Supplemental FM had no effect on plasma glucose and urea-N at parturition and 7 weeks postpartum. Thus, the increased milk and protein yield may be due to the combination of carryover effect of supplemental UIP or Met in FM from 4 weeks prepartum to 10 weeks postpartum and direct effect of supplemental FM.

The black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii is an important species for aquaculture in Korea. There are, however, no reports on the physiological responses to hypoxia in this species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute hypoxia on the physiological stress responses (plasma cortisol as the primary response, and plasma glucose, hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), sodium, chloride, osmolality, AST, ALT and total protein as the secondary responses) of the fish. The experimental fish were exposed to 0.5 ppm dissolved oxygen (DO) in the seawater via two methods (progressive stepwise decline (Exp. I), and direct decline (Exp. II)). A highly significant increase was detected in plasma cortisol levels due to the hypoxia treatments, and fish in Exp. I had hormone levels that were significantly higher than the fish in Exp. II. For plasma glucose, there was no significant difference between the Exp. I fish and the control fish, whereas Exp. II fish showed significantly higher plasma glucose levels than Exp. I fish and control fish. Ht values increased in both hypoxia treatments; however, Hb concentrations increased only in Exp. I. Although plasma chloride levels were unaffected by acute hypoxia, plasma sodium and osmolality levels increased in Exp. I. Progressive hypoxia (Exp. I fish) increased plasma AST, ALT and total protein. These results suggest that the value and direction of changes to the investigated parameters can be used to determine the resistance of black seabream to acute hypoxia.

This study was conducted to effect of extruded pellets (EPs) and moist pellet (MP) diet on growth and fish health parameters in farm cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Two replicate groups of 2,600 fish per each tank (initial weight of $30.1{\pm}0.2$ g) were fed one of the three EPs (EP1, EP2 and CEP) and one MP for 13 months. In field feeding experiment conducted in commercial flounder farm, survival, growth (30-600 g) and condition factor of fish fed experimental EP1 and EP2 were comparable to those of fish fed MP, but considerably higher feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were observed in fish fed experimental EPs. Viable cell counts from diet and water from MP diet were considerably higher than those from EP diet, and lysozyme activity from EP diet was higher than that from MP diet. GOT and GPT of fish fed the EP diet were considerably lower than those from MP group, but total protein and glucose concentration of fish fed the EP groups were not significantly different from that of fish fed the MP. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that EP diets could be developed to replace MP diet without adverse effects on growth performance and to enhance the immunity and protective ability of olive flounder against fish disease such as Vibro, Edwardsiella and Strptococcus.
The proximate composition and mineral contents of 18 subtropical fish species caught off the coast of Jeju Island, Korea were determined. The mean moisture content was highest (78.0%) in the eight species of lean fish, lowest (72.6%) in the four species of medium-fat fish, and intermediate (75.4%) in the six species of low-fat fish. The lipid content was in the order of medium-fat fish > low-fat fish > lean fish. The protein content ranged from 17.7% to 18.9%. The mean macro-mineral contents in the 18 species were 290.2 mg/100 g edible portion K, 146.6 mg P, 113.5 mg Na, 67.2 mg Ca and 38.3 mg Mg. The mean value of micro-mineral contents were 2.1 mg Fe, 1.7 mg Cu and 1.5 mg Zn. These results suggest that subtropical fish from Jeju Island are good sources of protein, lipid and minerals.

This study evaluated the utilization of a low fish meal (LFM) diet and black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens meal and oil as a fish meal (FM) substitute or functional additive for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus at the Jeju fish farm. Two experimental diets replaced FM using animal (tankage, poultry byproduct and tuna byproduct meal) and plant (wheat gluten and soy protein concentrate) protein sources, containing 45% (FM45) and 35% (FM35) of FM, respectively. One experimental diet replaced FM with animal, plant, and BSF meal, fish oil using insect meal and oil (FM35+). After the feeding trial ended, no differences in growth performance, feed utilization, survival and biological indices were observed among all experimental groups. Aspartate aminotransferase and cholesterol levels in the FM35 and FM35+ groups were significantly higher than that in the FM70 group. The linoleic acid level in the muscle was significantly higher in the fish fed with the FM70 diet than in those fed with the FM45, FM35, and FM35+ diets. Thus, the LFM diet is suitable for juvenile olive flounder farming during six months.
