This research was conducted to investigate pollutant load unit factor from aquacultural farms. Pollutant load unit factors were investigated on the 13 kinds of fish type, i.e., Trout, Leather Carp, Eel, Carp, Cartfish, Freshwater Eel, Crucian Carp, Colored Carp, Sturgeon, Marsh Snail, Sweetfish, Pond Snail, Eriocheir Sinensis. Water qualities in aquacultural farms were investigated wide range of values by fish type and pollutant items. High BOD and COD values were observed at the Leather Carp (Ponded water system), Cartfish (Ponded water system) and Freshwater Eel (Recirculating System). TOC and DOC values were relatively high at the Freshwater Eel (Recirculating System) and Eriocheir Sinensis (Extensive). Eel (Ponded water system) and Freshwater Eel (Recirculating System) produced high concentrated nutrient pollutants, i.e., T-N, T-P. Pollutant load unit factors are dependent on fish type, aquacultural type, water quality items, etc. If some fishes have similar basic unit values, those could be applied for TMDLs as a group of fish having same pollutant load unit. The water quality concentrations of post treatment facilities' (mainly reservoir tank) effluent were higher than those of fish raising bath because of extracting pollutant from sediment in the reservoir tank. Therefore, it needs to the management and regulations about post treatment facilities.
Ergasilus sieboldi, a parasitic Copepoda, was detected from the gill of Silurus asotus fingerling(7~10 cm long) cultured at a fish farm in Chungnam Province (Fig. 1 and 2). The infected fish did not show any particular external symptoms except a feeble swimming around the boarder of the pond. The isolated parasite was of 1.07 mm in body length with two egg sacks of 1.05 mm and one pair of hook-shaped secondary tentacle. Bychowsky(1963) described that this parasite infected the gill of Salmonidae, Serranidae, Cyprinidae and Siluridae and that the fish in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea. Caspian Sea. Japanese sea zones, Siberian rivers and Lake Bikal were infectd. Bychowsky further pointed out that heavily infected fish with this parasite become emaciated and slow in growth. and often die. As this parasite infected on the peri-branchial area. the infected fish showed a severe disturbance of respiration. Urawa et ai.(1980) studied on the development of Neoergasilus japonicus. an Ergasilidae, which infects Japanese freshwater fish. In Korea, Chun(1985) reported the identification of Ergasilus sieboldi from imported carp. and Neoergasilus and Pseudogasilus japonicus from bluegills. respectively. Chun also identified Pseudoergasilus zacconis in cultured ayu(Plecoglossus altivelis). However. this report deals with the detection of Ergasilus sieboldi from cultured catfish(Silurus asotus) for the first time in Korea.
This study was designed to evaluate the economic analysis of channel catfish production in 1998 based on fish value and total feed cost. Catfish received higher protein feeds with lesser amount based on the dietary protein levels, but received the constant total protein input for all treatments. Weight gain per pond for treatment 1 $(28\%\;protein,\;100\%\;of\;satiation)$ was higher (P<0.10) than for treatment 3 $(36\%\;protein,\;77.8\%\;of\;satiation)$, but not significantly higher than for treatment 2 $(32\%\;protein,\;87.5\%\;of\;satiation)$ at constant DE. At constant DE/P (treatments 4, 2 and 5), weight gain per pond for treatment 5 $(36\%\;protein,\;77.8\%\;of\;satiation)$ was lower (P<0.10) than for treatment 2, but not significantly lower than for treatment 4 $(28\%\;protein,\;100\%\;of\;satiation)$. At constant DE, feed conversion slightly improved as dietary protein level increased from $28\%\;to\;32\%$ and feed allowance decreased by $12.5\%$, but did not improve further as dietary protein level increased from $28\%\;to\;36\%$ and feed allowance decreased by $22.2\%$. At constant DE/P, feed conversion improved as dietary protein level increased from $28\%\;to\;32\%$ increased and feed allowance decreased by $12.5\%$, but did not improve as dietary protein level increased from $28\%\;to\;36\%$ and feed allowance decreased by $22.2\%$ Total feed cost for treatment 1 was slightly, but not significantly higher than for treatments 2 and 3 at constant DE. At constant DE/P, total feed cost for treatment 5 was higher (P<0.05) than for treatment 2, but not significantly higher than for treatment 4. Total value of fish ($ /ha) produced for treatment 1 was highest and lowest was for treatment 5. Return above feed cost was highest for treatment 1 and nearly the same as treatment 2. Return over feed cost for treatments 3 and 4 were slightly lower than for treatments 1 and 2. Economic analysis showed that feeding fish the diet containing $28\%$ protein and 3.08 kcal/g DE to satiation and the diet containing $32\%$ protein and 3.08 kcal/g DE to $87.5\%$ of satiation produced the highest profit to farmer.
This study was conducted to understand the distribution characteristics of aquatic insects in ecologically different ponds in terms of the disruption. We investigated the fauna of aquatic insects in three artificial ponds (pond 1, 2 and 3) and two natural ponds (pond 4 and 5) located within 1 km each other around Gungdaeoreum in Jeju Island, from March 2018 to June 2020. A total of 50 species belonging to 15 families were found in the surveyed ponds: total 850 individuals with 14 species in 4 families of the order Odonata, total 4,391 individuals with 14 species in 6 families of the order Hemiptera, and total 2,014 individuals with 22 species in 4 families of the order Coleoptera. In overall, total abundance and species numbers were relatively higher than those of artificial pond in natural ponds in which animal and plant ecosystems were well established. In the case of artificial ponds, the number of individuals and species recovered rapidly when reconstituted by introducing aquatic plants, etc. (Pond 1). The nymphs of Odonata were observed largely in ponds without natural enemies such as large fish, and where adults could freely access without interception by artificial structure. Phytophagous Corixidae of the order Hemiptera were abundant, and Haliplidae populations of the order Coleoptera were affected by the distribution of the plants. Accordingly, the major factors affecting aquatic insect abundance were identified as the presence of refuges such as the topography and aquatic plants and presence of predators. Species of the order, Odonata were vulnerable based on these factors. Our results can be useful as basic information for the restoration of wetlands and construction of artificial wetlands or for conservation of species diversity in the future.
The high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater incorporated with the ability to use carbon dioxide as the carbon source make the microalgae become more attractive in wastewater treatment process. This study evaluates the optimal conditions for the digestion of settelable solids from the recirculating aquaculture system to produce the biomass of the green microalga Scenedesmus sp. After solids separation, aerobic digestion of settleable solids under disperse condition produced nitrate as the final product of consequently ammonification and nitrification processes. With the optimal digestion procedure, nitrate concentration during aerobic digestion in 2000 mL vessel increased from $9.63{\pm}0.65mg\;N/L$ to $58.66{\pm}0.06mg\;N/L$ in 10 days. Thereafter, cultivation of Scenedesmus sp. was performed in 1000 mL Duran bottle with air bubbling. The highest Scenedesmus sp. specific growth rate of $0.321{\pm}0.01/d$ was obtained in treatment using liquid fraction after aerobic digestion as the whole culture medium for Scenedesmus sp. cultivation. With this study, digestion of $8,800{\pm}128.12mg\;dry\;weight/L$ of settleable solids from fish pond finally produced $1,235{\pm}21mg\;dry\;weight/L$ of Scenedesmus sp. biomass.
Most of channel fish farming in Alabama are still earthen pond style, and filled by rainfall and runoff. The water levels of ponds are maintained with stand-pipe, and the effluent from ponds very little discharged at usual time except ant heavy rains and crop season. Overflow from ponds following rains occurs mostly in winter and early spring when stream flows high. In this study to know how much effluents fish ponds affected to streams which are nearby ponds, a survey carried out on the variation of water quality of seven streams and effluents at heavy rains. Water samples were collected at 14 sites on upstream (did not affected by effluents) and downstream(being affect by effluents), and sampled monthly from August 1997 to August 1998. There were no clear trends of difference in most water quality variables between upstream and downstream of catfish farms during a year. The effluents from ponds after heavy rains were not highly polluted, but sometimes have elevated concentrations of TSS. Nitrogen content of effluents was higher than that of routine streams , but phosphorus was not clear. From this result suggest than the effluents from catfish farm are not having adverse impacts on stream water quality still yet .
Catfish Silurus asotus sampled from a pond farm in Korea, was affected with an epithelial tumor resembling catfish Ameiurus nrbulosus lip and mouth epithelioma. The neoplasm appeared in the form of solitary, multiple, large and fleshy masses upon the skin, fin or barbel. The epithelial tumor proliferation causes papillary folds supported by connective tissue cords. These folds extended above the normal skin surface and into the underlying dermis. In some area, proliferation of mucous cells or club cells were observed. The epithelial cells of the tumor were dispersed with no orderly arrangement. This is the first report on epithelioma of catfish in Korea.
The pilot plant had been made so as to be an association system from the various items managed to have degrees of efficiency and It have been done to consider the experimental result with irradiance period and pH influence of all major things to treatment function of Waste Stabilization Pond. The results are as following. The attained results for continuous & cyclic irradiance 1. 24L.-reactor was prior to 12L.-12D.-reactor on oxygen generation & algal production ability. 2. 24L.-reactor was prior to 12L.-12D.-reactor on nutrients removal efficiency. 3. In 24L.-reactor it maintained 5mg/L∼6mg/L, DO concent enough to a fish's survival. The attained results for pH condition 1. Oxygen generation ^ algal production in pH 4-reactor were higher than those in pH 10-reactor. 2. The acidic condition at pH 4 and alkalic condition at pH 10 did not so much affect an algal growth and nutrients removal. The attained results for whole 1. In view of the results appeared as [(NH3-N)+(NO3-N)] removal efficiency, 89.1%∼93.9% and PO4-P removal efficiency, 34.3%∼83.7% & COD removal efficiency, 88.5%∼93.9%. It is possible to treat the wastewater with starch and pH which have been known as thedifficult problem. 2. At the point of non using methanol to nitrificate NO3-N, the nutrients removal method by using an algal growth is the most economical method in the whole nutrients removal methods. 3. The nutrients removal method by using an algal growth contributes to natural ecosystem. 4. The nutrients removal method by using an algal growth is excellant in the prevention against the eutrophication.

This study was conducted to gain preliminary data for restoration and management of constructed small-scale ponds in paddy fields through analysis of their physicochemical and biological properties. A field survey was performed at 13 small-scale ponds located in paddy fields from August 2009 to October 2010. Structural properties, water quality, soil characteristics and fish fauna were measured. Results showed that small-scale ponds without frames might lose their function over time because of crumbling walls. Therefore, it is necessary for these ponds to have frames for soil protection and sustainable maintenance. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentration were higher than the water quality standard for agricultural water in small-scale ponds. In particular, TN concentration was 8.03 mg $L^{-1}$ and over 8 times the water quality standard because of the presence of livestock such as cows and pigs in the study areas. Sand, organic matter and available phosphorus contents of soil in small-scale ponds was 53.4${\pm}$16.6%, 21.8${\pm}$9.74 g $kg^{-1}$ and 12.8${\pm}$7.59 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively indicating that sand and available phosphorus contents were suitable for plants in small-scale ponds, but organic matter contents was somewhat low in newly constructed small-scale ponds, and would take some time to stabilize for plant growing. Fish fauna was not diverse with only 4 species at all sites surveyed. Collected fishes share a common feature that they all inhabit paddy fields or canals with shallow water depth. In this study, all ponds were not linked to the streams and canals around them. It appears that connection to adjacent streams was the major factor controlling fish fauna in small-scale ponds. The results of statistical analysis were classified into three groups. Factor 1 was 26.3%, which shows a structural properties such as area and depth of small-scale pond. As for factor 2, it appears on 20.1%, showing water quality like a TP, suspended solids (SS) and COD. Small-scale ponds were classified into three groups by factor scores. Group I consisted of 6 small-scale ponds, which were larger than the others. Group III had higher water quality than the others. We conclude that the most important points to be considered for restoration and management of small-scale ponds is connection with adjacent streams or ditches and depth and size of the small-scale pond.
Aluminum coagulant was applied to two eutrophic lakes (Lake Sukchon, in Seoul, and a pond on the campus of Kangwon National University), to precipitate suspended particles and phosphate from the water column. Aluminum sulfate (alum) was used for seven treatments and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was used for one treatment. The effect of treatment varied depending on the dose of alumium coagulant. Particles and phosphate were completely precipitated from the water column with a dose of 10.0 mgAl/l. Partial removal was observed at doses of 3.3 and 1.8 mgAl/l, but not at 0.45 mgAl/l. Therefore, coagulant should be applied at a dose over the threshold in order to remove particles effectively, which seems to be between 1.8 and 10.0 mgAl/l. The length of treatment effect was determined by new inputs of nutrients and particles from external sources. Renewal of pond water by stream water caused recovery of algal growth in Lake Sukchon, and rainfall runoff and ground water pumping caused a return of turbid water in the campus pond. During treatment there was no sign of decreasing pH, or harmful effects on fish or mussels. Aluminum coagulant may be an economically feasible alternative for water quality improvement when the external control of pollutant sources is difficult. However, repeated application is required when there is a renewal of lake water or new input of nutrients.
