  • In this study, the fish-migration ratios of rivers were analyzed, with the aim of proposing objective materials to help South Koreans to establish fish migration systems efficiently in the future. A total of 34,012 weirs have been built in the five major basins, with 5,081 fish-ways observed. Consequently, the fish migration ratio was considered low (14.9 %). According to the findings of the study analyzing the 5,081 fish-ways, standard-type fish-ways took up 68 % of the total while the non-standard types accounted for 32 %. The five major basins were observed to have a total fish-migration ratio of 21.4 %. Regarding tributaries, Tributary 1 accounted for 27.5 % of the fish-migration ratio, while Tributary 2 and 3 accounted for 19.8 % and 16.3 %, respectively. In conclusion, the study argues that any relevant field in the fishing industry of South Korea needs to improve their understanding of the fish-migration ratio. This would be expected, eventually, to help them maximize the efficiency of a minimum number of fish-ways. In addition, the study supports the need for those in relevant fields to study carefully the ecological needs of each fish species, before establishing priority standards for the building of fish-ways.

  • Background: The flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus has the widest distribution among mugilid species. Recent studies based on mitochondrial DNA sequences showed that the species comprises at least 14 different groups, three of which occur in the northwest Pacific. We analyzed the otolith microchemistry of M. cephalus at several locations in Korea to improve understanding of migration pattern and population origin. Results: We collected 123 sagittal otoliths from seven locations and determined their concentrations of eight elements (7Li, 24Mg, 55Mn, 57Fe, 60Ni, 63Cu, 88Sr, and 138Ba) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Mean otolith elemental ratios differed significantly among the locations. The Sr:Ca, Fe:Ca, and Ba:Ca ratios were significantly higher than others, and useful chemical signatures for investigating the habitat use of M. cephalus populations. We identified five diverse and complicated migration patterns using the otolith data that we collected: estuarine resident (type I), freshwater migrant (type II), estuarine migrant (type III), seawater resident (type IV), and seawater migrant (type V). A canonical discriminant analysis plot revealed separation of two groups (type II in the Yellow Sea vs. other types in remaining locations). Two locations on Jeju Island, despite their close proximity, had fish with quite different migration patterns, corroborating previous molecular studies that distinguished two groups of fishes. Conclusion: We successfully showed that the migration patterns of the Korean mullet varied by location. Only fish from the western sector of Jeju had a unique migration pattern, which is likely confined population in this area. Among the eight otolith elements measured, the Sr:Ca ratio was found to be the best indicator of migration pattern and population origin.

  • The coastal regions of Yeosu, the South Sea of Korea, has occurred annually the red tide which is caused by potentially ichthyotoxic dinoflagellate C. polykrikoides, with a wide avenue for exchange with oceanic waters and freshwater runoff from Sumjin river. We attempted to examine the variability in response to vertical migration and concentration of extracted DNA/RNA of C. polykrikoides exposed to salinity-stratified waters. The experimental aquarium of the 60 liter was employed to culture C. polykrikoides. One aquarium was supplied with only sea water, the other was consisted of sea water and freshwater. Experiment was conducted for 5 days. In experimental column (mixture of freshwater and sea water), salinity was maintained to 20 at upper and approximately 30 at bottom during the period of this study. The fluctuation with related to dissolved oxygen and pH was similar pattern to both columns. Chlorophyll a was significantly higher value at upper than bottom. During 24h, chlorphyll a on experimental column was extremely high on the top as soon as lighting, compared with control. With elapsed time, the gap between experimental and control columns was a little. In darkness, chlorophyll a was not significantly different between upper and bottom, most cells appeared to randomly distribute on column regardless of water layer. Fluctuation with related to concentration of extracted DNA and RNA based on ratio of absorbance of 260 and 280 nm in experimental column was higher at final day or diel migration than control. These results implied that a large volume of freshwater could be associated with influence of concentration of DNA and RNA, in particular, rapid upward movement caused massive fish kills as soon as sunset.

  • In order to investigate the position of various fatty acids attached to glycerol and the specificity of Lipolase-100T, hydrolysis of fish oil was carried out with Lipolase-100T derived from Aspergillus oryzae. The amounts of free fatty acids produced from triglyceride, 1,2(2,3)-diglyceride, 1,3-diglyceride, and 2-monoglyceride and conversion rates of 1,2(2,3)-diglyceride to 1,3-diglyceride and 2-monoglyceride to 1(3)-monoglyceride were also calculated. The ratio of 1,2-diglyceride content to 1,3-diglyceride was higher than 70 in the early period of hydrolysis. The fatty acid content of the glyceride mixture after 72 h of hydrolysis was compared with that of fish oil, and it was found that polyunsaturated fatty acids such as C16:4, C20:4 n-3, C20:5 n-3, C21:5 n-3, C22:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 were located in the 2-position of glycerol. Material balance of each component in the hydrolysis system was written to obtain a set of simultaneous linear equations. The theoretical quantity of free fatty acids produced from triglyceride, 1,2-diglyceride, 1,3-diglyceride, and monoglyceride, respectively, were calculated by solving the linear equation system. The conversion rate of 1,2(2,3)-diglyceride to 1,3-diglyceride and that of 2-monoglyceride to 1(3)-monoglyceride were also obtained. The results showed that the migration rate of 1,2(2,3)-diglyceride to 1,3-diglyceride was higher than the hydrolysis rate of 1,2(2,3)-diglyceride to 2-monoglyceride and the conversion rate of 2-monoglyceride to 1(3)-monoglyceride was extremely low.

  • The use of fishway has been investigated up to 2~9 years, continuously each month and over the long term that installed in 6 domestic rivers. The fish's use of fishway has been investigated as direct collection by trap in exit section of the fishway. The population structure of fish using 6 fishway and the fish that live in the river showed difference. About 2 to 7 species of fish took possession of more than 80% of total use of fish in fishways. This seems to be not the results of attraction flow in fishway but specialized result of physiology characteristic followed by species of fish. In addition, the distribution of fish species using fishway was different with the fishways installed in river. This difference seems to be consequence of the place that of the river and fishway types. Generally, the fish species were less and had high ratio of home migratory fish in vertical slot type fishway, which shows relatively fast velocity of water flow. This analysis result of major fish species using fishway can be used in planning fishway and to choose major targeted species for the planning.

  • We examined shrimp and bycatch species composition in the shrimp beam trawl fishery off Wan-do, Korea(in the major or fishing ground)from December 2004 to November 2005. We observed a total of 103, 072 individuals in 96 taxa. By densities of individuals, 96.97% were shrimps, 1.20% decapods, 1.10% fish, 0.30% cephalopods and 0.43% other species. By catch weight, 57.29% were shrimps, 26.33% fish, 6.82% decapods, 4.64% cephalopods and 4.92% other species. In spring, the dominant bycatch species by biomass were Okamejei kenojei, Lophiomus setigerus, and Charybdis bimaculata. In summer, the dominant species were Charybdis bimaculata, Muraenesox cinereus, and Paralichlhys olivaceus. In autumn, dominants were Okamejei kenojei, Conger myriasler, and Sefipinna tenuifilis, and in winter they were Okamjei kenojei, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, and Sillago japonica. Bycatch species composition and individual species abundances differed significantly among seasons, probably indicating that variations were related to the life history characteristics of bycatch species. The diversity index was highest in October (2.797) and lowest in July (1.012). The July dominance index (0.569) was much higher than in other months; evenness was highest in September (0.856) and lowest in July (0.374). During the study period, the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of this fishery varied from 0.063 in February 2005 to 11.031 in May 2005, with a mean of 3.363 These temporal variations may be linked 10 variations in reproductive behaviors and migration patterns of the marine animals sampled.

  • This paper deals with the numbers of vertebrae, gill rakers and relative growth of the Pacific saury, Cololabis saira along the eastern coast of Korea in May, July and December 1970. About 90 percent of the total fish population possessed 64-66 vertebrae with the mean of 64.80 and the mode of 65. The number of gill rakers varied from 33 to 44 in December with the mean of 37.08. With regard to the number of vertebrae and gill rakers of the medium (26.0-28.0 cm in fork length) and large (30.0-31.0 cm in fork length) sized groups, there are similarities between the northbound modium sized group and the southbound large sized one, and also between the southbound medium and southbound large sized groups. Although no correlation was found between the numbers of vertebrae and gill rakers, in December the number of vertebrae of the large sized group exceeded that of the medium sized group, and on the other hand the number of gill rakers of the large sized group was fewer than that of the meduim sized one. There was a tendency of decreasing in ratio of the head length to the fork length as the latter increased, The relationships between the fork length and the head length varied depending on the northbound and southbound migration of the fish. The same tendency was also seen in the relationship between the fork length and the body weight. The body weight increased from July to December (from medium to largo sized group) showed more than twice than that from December to the following July (from medium to large sized group). The coefficient of fatness remained constant in December, but a distinct variation was found between the medium and large sized groups in July, corresponding to the spawning sea-son of the fish. Relatively higher coefficient was found in December as compared to that found in July.

  • In order to effectively utilize marine processing by-product such as fish scale, chemical compositions for the scale were analyzed. The selected fishes were gray mullet, Mugil cephalus, living in the sea and carp, Cyprinus carpio in the fresh water, having a lot of scales among the fishes living in seawater and fresh water. And we also investigated the difference in the chemical compositions between gray mullet and carp, depending on both living circumstances. The major components of the scales were found to be crude ash and crude protein which were each about 49% for gray mullet and which were about 20% and 79% for carp, respectively, on the basis of dried scales. The proteins extracted from both scales proved to be collagen through amino acid compositions and SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterm. Also this scale collagen was assumed to by Type I collagen because the migration rate of $\alpha$1 and $\alpha$2 subunit of the collagen were almost the same those as calf skin Type I collagen. Most of proteins from gray mullet was collagen, however, the collagen content in proteins from carp was estimated to be only about 53%, on the basis of the ratio of hydroxyproline to protein. The crude ashes of both scales identified to be hydroxyapatite through element compositions and X-ray diffraction analysis. In conclusion, both fishes in different living circumstances were almost similar to in the chemical compositions but chemical contents for crude ash and crude protein.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the fish community structures and distribution characteristics of fisheries resources in the Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream, fishery resources protection areas. For the study, we conducted fish samplings four times in the two streams from April to October 2019. In Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream, we sampled 31 species and 29 species and the dominant species were Zacco platypus (28.6%) and Squalidus multimaculatus(41.7%), respectively. According to the life type of fish species, primary freshwater species were collected 18 species(58.1%) and 21 species(72.4%), and migration fishes were sampled 4 species (12.9%) and 6 species (20.7%) in Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream, respectively. Fisheries resources species showed high relative abundance in June, and the fish biomass was highest in October. As a results of comparing the previous studies with this study, both rivers showed high biodiversity and were found to maintain stable populations of fishes. According to analysis of tolerance guilds, the proportion of tolerant species, based on the number of individuals, was composed of 14.4% and 1.1% in Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream, respectively. This very low ratio of tolerant species confirmed that both streams have very good physiochemical environment conditions. From the above results, it was judged that the fishery resource protection areas of Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream have high ecological function and preservation value. For sustainable use and management of fishery resource protection areas of Osip Stream and Wangpi Stream, it is suggested that biological disturbance management, fish discharge projects considering environmental capacity, efforts to improve the habitat environment, and establishing a fishery resource protection areas management system were necessary as considerations.

  • Specimens of eels, collected in the lagoons of Arcachon Bay from April 1977 to October 1978, were analysed for age and growty. The structure of the otolith was described based on examination of the decalccified surface using an scanning electron microscope, and was compared with obcervations made under an optical microscope. The otolith of Arcachon eels show a narrow summer growth stop in addition to a growth stop formed in winter. The narrow summer growtu in length of sedentsry eels was well represented removal of the large memgers by the migration to the sea decreases the growth ratio of sedentary eels as the fish grows older. This size selective migrationin part contributes to satisfy Von Bertalanffy's assumption. Length distribution of the exceptionally large eels in relation to age was analysed ty comparing them with "normal" sedentary eesl and with silver migsating, and it is suggested that thew exceptionally large eesl consist of the anmals which probably the [apacity for growth wen alredy young.
