  • Nowadays, various forms of electro-optical rifle scope have been developed and used in order to enhance the accuracy of small arms. However, firing shock acceleration has characteristics of pyroshock having a big acceleration value with very short duration time, which the electro-optical scopes should be designed to sustain. In this paper, the firing shock acceleration, which is transmitted to the electro-optical scope, was measured and SRS (Shock Response Spectrum) analysis was performed by using the measured firing shock acceleration. Furthermore, a shock test condition using a drop-table shock tester, which can simulate the actual firing shock acceleration, was devised. The devised shock test condition will be utilized to test the electro-optical scope itself before attaching it to the small arms.

  • Several pyrotechnic devices are employed over the course of satellite's missions, generally for the separation of structural subsystems and deployment of appendages. Firing of pyrotechnic devices results in impulsive loads characterized by high peak acceleration and high frequency content which can cause failures of various flight hardware elements and small components. Thus, accurate prediction of acceleration level in various components of spacecraft due to pyrotechnic devices is important. In this paper, two methods for pyroshock prediction, an empirical model and statistical energy analysis in conjunction with virtual mode synthesis, are applied to predict shock response of a low altitude earth observation satellite during launch vehicle separation. The predicted results are then evaluated through comparison with the shock test results.

  • Mica capacitor is being adopted for high voltage firing unit of guided weapon system because of its superior impact enduring property relative to ceramic capacitor. Reliability of localized mica high voltage capacitors was verified through environmental test like terminal strength test, humidity test, thermal shock test and accelerated life test for application to high voltage firing unit. Failure mode of mica capacitor is a decrease of insulation resistance and its final dielectric breakdown. Main constants of accelerated life model were derived experimentally and voltage constant and activation energy were 5.28 and 0.805 eV respectively. Lifetime of mica capacitor at normal use condition was calculated to be 38.5 years by acceleration factor, 496, and lifetime at accelerated condition and this long lifetime confirmed that mica high voltage capacitor could be applied for firing unit.
