Recently, forced ventilating air conditioning system has been widely used in modern buildings. However, It is obvious that this kind of system may affect on the response of fire detectors at real fire incidents, especially, on the ionization smoke detector, which is critically influenced by air stream. Therefore we studied to verify the response characteristics of air stream by ionization smoke detector for the design of facilities in practice. In this study, experiments were executed to examine the correlation between air velocity and the ionization detector's responses with var-ious air velocity and smoke densities in the simulated test room. As a result of experiments, ionization detector's operating time is in reverse proportion to air velocity. And the detector shows more sensitive reaction when the velocity of smoke stream increase over 60 cm/s. In addition, it was shown that ionization smoke detector is more sensitive to smoldering fires in paper than that in petro-chemicals.

In this study, the smoke flows of the inner subway station were visualized through a numerical analysis and visualization experiment in the subway fire. A transparent acrylic model was designed and installed as 1:25th scale-down as the actual subway station by using geometrical similarity The properties of subway fire were reconstructed according to Densimetric Froude Similarity. The 47 to 53 ratio of the mixed air and Helium was inputted in the inner acrylic model to describe 1MW fire intensity with reference to the experiment paper. For the same time, the fire smoke from a smoke generator was inputted in the inner acrylic model with the mixture. At this time, the buoyancy effect of Helium gas went up the smoke to the acrylic model. When the sheet beam of Ar-lon laser was given out to the top and stair of subway model, the digital camcorder took the images of the scattered cluster of smoke particles when applying the smoke management system and PSD.

The present study investigates the effect of balcony on external smoke movement of high rise building through the fire tests of the 1/10 reduced model scale using Froude scaling. A hexane pool fire is used to examine the smoke movement for various opening sizes of balcony and temperature distributions are measured by T-type thermocouples. Also, hydrogen bubble technique is applied to visualize the smoke movement near the balcony. Measured temperatures of the closed balcony is 2.5 times higher than those of the open balcony because the external smoke in case of the closed balcony rise along the vertical wall. The maximum vertical temperature of partially closed balcony is similar with fully closed balcony and mean temperature inside of balcony increases as opening size of balcony decreases. The experimental results show that the balcony space plays an important roles in preventing fire propagation and cooling of smoke layer. In order to ensure the fire safety in high rise building design, a series of systematic researches are required to examine the various type of balconies.
In Part II, the temperature and smoke particle distributions of the extraction system, which yielded the best smoke removal performance among the three smoke control systems in Part I, for extraction flowrates of 0.6∼2.4 ㎥/s and two fire sizes of 200 ㎾ and 2 ㎿ were presented. The same numerical method was utilized to the same computational domain and configurations as Part I. It was shown that the extraction flowrate affects the smoke control performance significantly, and that a similar trend in improving the smoke removal performance with the increasing extraction flowrate between the two fire sizes. An extraction flowrate of 2.4 ㎥/s or higher was required for the temperature in the escape route less than $^{\circ}C$ for the given situations.

Hot-smoke testing in Australia has progressed to the stage where there is an Australian Standard for these tests. The purpose of such tests is twofold: firstly they can validate computer modeling predictions for smoke movement, and secondly they can demonstrate that the smoke control systems and associated fire safety systems function satisfactorily. Hot-smoke tests were carried out in March 1997 at two of Sydney's underground railway stations, namely St James and Museum. The purpose of the tests was to demonstrate that the smoke control systems performed their functions as intended. Tests were carried out in the concourses and on the platforms, and trains ran during the tests so that the effect of moving trains on smoke movement could be observed. A total of five tests were carried out and video recordings were taken of each. This is the first time that hot-smoke tests have been carried out in an underground station with trains running. The paper discusses some of the interesting observations and the problems identified by the tests.

According to building law, there are only regulations on the fire prevention compartments that can perform the function of partial smoke compartment, but the building law management of the smoke compartment for effective smoke diffusion prevention and control is not possible. The lack of control on the smoke compartment such as leakage rate on the penetrating part, and the lack of leakage rate in the design of smoke control of fire safety law resulted in the absence of fundamental safety technology. Therefore, this study seeks to find solutions to domestic problems after reviewing relevant domestic laws and regulations.
In restroom on high-rise building, exhaust system comprising the blower and duct is installed to discharge the odor and the water is suppled. Thus the restroom with fire and flame protection system may be used as refuge area in a fire situation. The study presents the smoke-proof system which operates such that the exhaust system to discharge the odor is converted to air supply system and appropriate pressure difference between the restroom and the accommodation is maintained. Also real-scale test facilities of smoke-proof system for refuge space using a restroom are installed on 5-story smoke control test building and experiments for evaluating the operational performance of smoke-proof system are carried out.

The big issue in fire and life safety protection in atriums is that hot smoke can spread vertically via the atrium openings, and impact atrium floors remote from the fire. Three different strategies to provide fire and life safety protection for atrium space were evaluated in this study, using the FDS model. Strategy A is the atrium protection approach addressed in the Korean Building Fire Protection Code, where atria are required to be enclosed with fire shutters from the $2^{nd}$ floor to the atrium top, and the ground floor is allowed to open to the atrium; in this case, no smoke control is required. Strategy B is the atrium protection approach, with smoke control provided in accordance with NFPA 92B; in this case, no atrium floor is enclosed. Strategy C is the atrium protection approach, in which some of the upper atrium floors are enclosed (the case of the top atrium floor being enclosed is evaluated in this study), and atrium smoke control is also provided to protect the lower atrium floors.
In order to investigate the fire-induced smoke movement in a three-dimensional room with an open door, numerical and experimental study was performed. The center, wall, and corner fire plumes for various sized fires were studied experimentally in a rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. The numerical results from a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) field model were compared with experimental results obtained in this and from literature. Comparisons of SMEP and experimental results have shown reasonable agreement. As the fire strength became larger for the center fires, the air mass flow rate in the door, average hot layer temperature, flame angle and mean flame height were observed to increase but the doorway-neutral-planeheight and the steady-state time were observed to decrease. Also as the wall effect became larger in room fires, the hot layer temperature, mean flame height, doorway-neutral-planeheight and steady-state time were observed to increase. In the egress point of view considering the smoke filling time and the early spread of plume in the room space, the results of the center fire appeared to be more dangerous as compared with the wall and the corner fire. Thus it is necessary to consider the wall effect as an important factor in designing efficient fire protection systems.
The main objective of the present study is to investigate smoke propagation in railway tunnels with rescue stations. In particular, based on measurement of HRR (heat release rate) for pool fires formed at different locations, the influence of fire source location on smoke behavior is examined. The fuel is n-heptane and pool fires are generated with a square length 4cm. With the use of MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for fire source, extensive numerical simulations are performed by using the commercial code FLUENT (Ver.6.3) Predicted smoke temperatures and smoke propagation are discussed. From numerical predictions, it is found that ventilation systems may be necessary in the railway tunnels because the smoke moves along the tunnel, and consequently it enters the non-accident tunnel. It is also confirmed that the cross-passage and fire protection wall systems contribute to control the smoke.
