  • Because of the recent increase in maritime cargo capacity, the production and price of crude oil have been rising. As oil prices have risen, many problems have occurred in the industry. To solve these problems, marine resources are being actively developed, and there has been an increase in the orders for special vessels and marine structures for the development of marine resources. However, consequently, various kinds of accidents have also occurred in these special vessels and structures. One of the major types of accidents involves fire and explosion, which cause many casualties and property damage. Therefore, various studies to estimate and prevent such accidents have been carried out. In this study, as basic research for the prevention of fire and explosion, numerical simulations on combustion were carried out by using a commercial grid generation program, Gridgen, and a CFD program, ANSYS-CFX. The influences of some parameters, such as the grid system, turbulence model, turbulent dissipation rate, and so on, on the simulation results were investigated, and optimum ones were chosen. It was found that the present results adopting these parameters agreed moderately well with other experimental and numerical ones.

  • Combustion characteristics of gasoline/ethanol fuel were investigated both numerically and experimentally for vehicle fire safety. The numerical simulation was performed on the well-stirred reactor (WSR) to simulate the homogeneous gasoline engine and to clarify the effect of ethanol addition in the gasoline fuel. The simulating cases with three independent variables, i.e. ethanol mole fraction, equivalence ratio and residence time, were designed to predict and optimized systematically based on the response surface method (RSM). The results of stoichiometric gasoline surrogate show that the auto-ignition temperature increases but NOx yields decrease with increasing ethanol mole fraction. This implies that the bioethanol added gasoline is an eco-friendly fuel on engine running condition. However, unburned hydrocarbon is increased dramatically with increasing ethanol content, which results from the incomplete combustion and hence need to adjust combustion itself rather than an after-treatment system. For more tangible understanding of gasoline/ethanol fuel on pollutant emissions, experimental measurements of combustion products were performed in gasoline/ethanol pool fires in the cup burner. The results show that soot yield by gravimetric sampling was decreased dramatically as ethanol was added, but NOx emission was almost comparable regardless of ethanol mole fraction. For soot morphology by TEM sampling, the incipient soot such as a liquid like PAHs was observed clearly on the soot of higher ethanol containing gasoline, and the soot might be matured under the undiluted gasoline fuel.

  • The combustion characteristic was evaluated for Pinus densiflora, used as a building material in Hanok, which were treated with two different flame retardant method. The specimen was brushed with flame retardant liquid two or three times and then let the specimen dehydrated during 24 h for spreaded treating. And the other specimen was soaked in the liquid for 72 h. The test methods were inflammability test using meker burner and heat release rate test using cone calorimeter. As a result for the tests, flame retardant treated specimens met the requirements of the inflammability and the spreaded treated method was more efficient than immersed method. The spreaded treated specimen had lower combustive properties than immersed specimen in TTI (time to ignition), PHRR (peak heat release rate), MLR (mass loss rate) and THR (total heat release).

  • The carbonized length and area of plywood by the various spreading concentration of water glass and the type of additives were measured in accordance with the 45° MecKel's burner method of the fire protection performance standard of the Korean National Fire Agency. As a result of treating water glass with a concentration of 20 to 50 % on plywood, the flame retardancy tended to increase in proportion to the concentration of water glass. However, the optimum concentration of water glass was determined to be 30 % due to the efflorescence and sticky on the surface of plywood treated with high-concentration water glass of more than 30 %. As a result of the experiment by adding different proportions of additives to the water glass with concentration of 30 %, the standard of flame performance standard was satisfied under the conditions with the addition of 15% potassium hydroxide and 1-10% aluminum hydroxide, respectively. On the other hand, there were no significant difference in the flame retardancy by adding magnesium sulfate. These results about the flame retardancy of plywood by water glass and additives were expected to be basic data for improving flame-retardant treated wood.

  • A flame stability diagram in a partially premixed flame is typically expressed using the axis coordinates of heat input rate and equivalence ratio. These diagrams are inadequate for identifying changes in combustion conditions and flame stability when a reference fuel is substituted with other fuels under identical operating conditions. This study proposes a new type of diagram and validates it experimentally. In this new diagram, the axis coordinates are air flow rate and Wobbe fuel flow rate, defined as the fuel flow rate multiplied by the square root of the relative density. The diagram was validated in trials using various fuels, including $CH_4$, $C_{3}H_{8}$, and LFG-$C_{3}H_{8}$ mixed fuels, in a domestic gas-range and an gas interchangeability test burner. The results of these trials show that the new diagram can provide information useful for assessing gas interchangeability of combustion conditions and flame stability when one fuel is substituted with another under identical operating conditions.

  • The characteristics of soot deposition on the cold wall in laminar diffusion flames have been numerically analyzed with a two-dimension with the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). In particular, the effects of surrounding air temperature and wall temperature have been discussed. The fuel for the flame is an ethylene ($C_2H_4$). The surrounding oxygen concentration is 35%. Surrounding air temperatures are 300K, 600K, 900K and 1200K. Wall temperatures are 300K, 600K and 1200K. The soot deposition length defined as the relative approach distance to the wall per a given axial distance is newly introduced as a parameter to evaluate the soot deposition tendency on the wall. The result shows that soot deposition length is increased with increasing the surrounding air temperatures and with decreasing the wall temperature. And the numerical results led to the conclusion that it is essential to consider the thermophoretic effect for understanding the soot deposition on the cold wall properly.

  • In this study, $20Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator which can be apply to the hydrogen station was tested for hydrogen station application. $20Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator was developed by upgrading concept of stacking plate reactor from former $20Nm^3/hr$ scale plate hydrogen generator. concepts for improving system efficiency and performance include such as idea of heat recovery from the exhaust, exhaust duct which is especially design for plate type reactor reinforcement of insulation, enlargement of heat exchange area of reactor, introduction of desulphurizer reactor and PROX rector in a compact design, introduction of back fire protection structure of plate burner and so on, We can learn that final prototype of scale-up $20Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator can be operated steadily in 100% road at which over 94% of methane conversion(S/C=3.75) was obtained. In case of making up the weak point, we expect that it is possible to apply to hydrogen station by way of showing an example.

  • A cup burner experiment was performed to investigate the effect of the oxidizer velocity and concentration on flame instability near extinction. Heptane was used as a fuel and air diluted by nitrogen and carbon dioxide was used in the oxidizer stream. Two types of flame instabilities at the flame base and at axial downstream were observed near extinction. The instability at the flame base could be characterized by cell, swing, and rotation modes, and the cell mode changed to the rotation mode through the swing mode as the oxidizer velocity increased. To assess the parameters for the flame instability, the initial mixture strengths, Lewis number, and adiabatic flame temperature were investigated under each condition. The Lewis number might be the most important among them, but it is impossible to generalize because of the insufficient number of cases. Furthermore, the axial periodic flickering motion disappeared at low and high oxidizer velocities near extinction. This resulted from the fact that low oxidizer velocity induced evaporated fuel velocity below the critical velocity and high velocity made the reacting fuel velocity comparable.

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion and emissions in pulverized coal fired boiler for using high moisture coal and dry coal through computational fluid dynamics(CFD). We validated this boiler model with performance data of the boiler. The results of flow characteristics showed that climbing speed of gases was increased as blending ratio of high moisture coal was increased. It can decrease a residence time of fuel in the furnace. And it influence coal combustion. The coal burnout and NOx generation in burner level were decreased as increasing blending ratio of high moisture coal. The gas temperature and NOx formation were increased after OFA level due to coal burnout delay.

  • Numerical simulation of the natural gas steam reforming process for on-site hydrogen production in a $H_2$ fueling station was conducted on the basis of process material and heat balances. The effects of reforming parameters on the process efficiency of hydrogen production were investigated, and set-point values of each of the parameters to minimize the sizes of unit process equipments and to secure a stable operability of the reforming process were suggested. S/C ratio of the reforming reactants was found to be a crucial parameter in the reforming process mostly governing both the hydrogen production efficiency and the stable operability of the process. The operation of the process was regarded to be stable if the feed water(WR) as a reforming reactant could evaporate completely to dry steam through HRSG. The optimum S/C ratio was 3.0 where the process efficiency of hydrogen production was maximized and the stable operability of the process was secured. The optimum feed rates of natural gas(NGR) and WR as reforming reactants and natural gas(NGB) as a burner fuel were also determined for the hydrogen production rate of $27\;Nm^3/h$.
