  • In this study, the fire suppression characteristics of a water mist with natural wind in a road tunnel were calculated using the FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulation) code. In addition, the cooling and the chemical kinetic effects of water vapor on fire extinction ere investigated in a counterflow non-premixed flame using a detailed chemistry. As a result, the behavior of fire plume and the spray characteristics of water mist are modified remarkably with the increasing of wind velocity. In the case which is not the external natural wind, small droplets are more efficient in fire suppression than large droplets. However, the large droplets show better results on the fire suppression than the small droplets with the increasing of wind velocity. It can be estimated that the natural wind disturb the penetration of water droplets into the flame region and decrease the effect of oxygen dilution. Finally, it can be identified that the fire into the natural wind can be suppressed with smaller amount of $H_2O$ by flame stretching effect in the flame region than one in an enclosure, and the chemical kinetic effects of $H_2O$ on fire extinction are not affected significantly the velocity of natural wind.

  • We carried out a one-way heating experiment on the PC panel manufactured by changing the filling depths(20,30,40,50mm) of concrete regarding the fire strength in order to measure the inner concrete pressure which is a direct cause of concrete spalling. This fire experiment was conducted under the fire strength conditions of ISO 834 Standard, Modified Hydrocarbon and the maximum value of Pore Pressure was measured. As a result of analyzing the time it took to reach maximum pressure, it showed that the time rising to the maximum pressure of high strength concrete of 40MPa is slower than that of a 24MPa tunnel lining. In case of ISO fire conditions, spalling damage might take place in heating period of $20{\sim}40$ minutes in the range of $100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ temperature. In case of MHC fire conditions, the area damaged by fire can appear after a lapse of $25{\sim}50$ minutes in the range of $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ temperature.

  • This study provides a basic data necessary to design a facility of smoke management after calculating the critical velocity of the gradient scale model tunnel and reviewing its adequacy to establish an optimum disaster prevention system for a road tunnel at fire. The experiment is carried out by using Froude scaling to a scale model which is about 1/29 as big as the real tunnel, and its critical velocity calculation is calculated to the 0-2% gradient of the tunnel. The result shows that the higher the gradient is, the stronger the critical velocity, but that it doesn't affect the critical velocity so much when the gradient is less 2%. In addition, this result is studied in comparison with the results done by other researchers to review the adequacy of the critical velocity.

  • A quantitative risk assessment method for quantitatively evaluating the fire risk in designing a road tunnel disaster prevention facilities has been introduced to evaluate the appropriateness of a disaster prevention facility in a large tunnel through which all vehicle types pass. However, since the quantitative risk assessment method of the developed can be applied only to the large sectional area tunnels (large tunnels), it is necessary to develop a quantitative risk assessment method for road tunnels passing only small cars which has recently been constructed or planned. In this study, fire accidents scenarios and quantitative risk assesment method for small road tunnels through small cars only which is based on the methods for existing road tunnels (large tunnels). And the risk according to the distance between cross passage is evaluated. As a result, in order to satisfy the societal risk assessment criteria, the distance of the appropriate distance between cross passages was estimated to be 200 m, and the effect of the ventilation system of the large port exhaust ventilation system was quantitatively analyzed by comparing the longitudinal ventilation system.

  • Recently, a fire suddenly broke out in a crowded theater, and many people were unable to find an escape route, becoming entangled, injured, and suffocating from smoke inhalation, resulting in a large-scale fire accident. Even though most of the people were young, they were unable to evacuate. If they had been elderly, it could have resulted in greater casualties. In particular, since it is difficult to receive accurate location information from GPS indoor, there is an urgent need for location-based services using beacons and an emergency evacuation system that intuitively shows evacuation routes in augmented reality using smart-phones. In this paper, an augmented reality-based emergency evacuation smartphone app was developed based on identifying fire locations and evacuation routes using beacons and fire sensors (IoT). In the future, if the proposed system is applied to indoor spaces where people are crowded, rapid evacuation will be possible even in a sudden fire accident, minimizing human damage.

  • In this study, we investigated the operation of railroad fire fighting vehicles against fires on trains in a long railway tunnel. In recent years, long railway tunnels (more than 10 km in length) have been built and the number of such tunnels, such as the Geumjeong tunnel (20.3 km in length) on the Gyeongbu high speed line, Solan tunnel (16.7 km in length) on the Yeongdong line and Yulhyeon tunnel (50.3 km in length) on the Suseo high speed line which is scheduled to be opened in the second half of 2016, is increasing. Significant damage is to be expected, due to the increased evacuation time and limited accessibility of fire services when the train is stopped by an urgent fire in the tunnel. Special fire fighting vehicles capable of running on rails have been developed and operated in overseas advanced countries. Therefore, a fire-response system using Unimog vehicles, which can run on road and rail, instead of road vehicles, is necessary. The characteristics of the railway tunnel and thermal environmental change caused by a train fire in a tunnel were analyzed in this study. Also, the operational requirements of the railroad fire fighting vehicles were evaluated by taking into account the specifications of the railroad fire fighting vehicles under development.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the standard of fire lane design to improve the performance of disaster prevention in local area. To accomplish it, we have focused on three research methods as below: first, we have expected disaster occurrence based on emergency tendency in local area; second, we have verified fire lane routes design through fire lane modeling and network analysis; third, we have quantitatively examined a possibility of danger of fire lanes through current road network modeling and analysis. The result of this study could be helpful to effective fire lane designs and quantitative analyses.

  • This study was executed to review feasibility on the calculation of critical velocity with a reduced model of an actual tunnel in order to establish the optimum fire protection system for a fire in road tunnels. In a scaled model about 1/29 of an actual tunnel based on the Froude scaling, critical velocity was calculated by visualizing smoke flow and analyzing correlation with temperature. In the experiment, critical velocities at which smoke backflow length became zero showed a small difference within about 5% compared to results calculated by the Kennedy formula, and the relation between smoke flow and temperature distribution appeared similarly without getting greatly influenced by changes in fire intensity.

  • The flow field in road tunnel is influenced by some facts such as piston effect of vehicle's move, operation of ventilation facilities, natural wind and buoyancy effect of fire plume. Among those, jet fan is one of main ventilation facilities especially in longitudinal ventilation system of tunnel. In this study to analyze tunnel flow induced by operation of jet fan, numerical simulation has been carried out. The velocity distributions and streamlines in tunnel are examined to consider the three-dimensional characteristics of tunnel flow caused by jet fan.
