  • The mechanical behavior of rectangular foundation plates with perimetric beams and internal stiffening beams of the plate is herein analyzed, taking the foundation design into account. A series of dimensionless parameters related to the geometry of the studied elements were defined. In order to generalize the problem statement, an initial settlements was considered. A numeric procedure was developed for the resolution by means of the Finite Differences Method that takes into account the stiffness of the plate, the perimetric and internal plate beams and the soil reaction module. Iterative algorithms were employed which, for each of the analyzed cases, made it possible to find displacements and reaction percentages taken by the plate and those that discharge directly into the perimetric beams, practically without affecting the plate. To enhance its mechanical behavior the internal stiffening beams were prestressed and the results obtained with and without prestressing were compared. This analysis was made considering the load conditions and the soil reaction module constant.

  • PURPOSES : This paper numerically evaluates the contribution of transverse steel to the structural behavior of continuously reinforced concrete pavements to understand the role of transverse steel. METHODS : Two-lane continuously reinforced concrete pavements with and without transverse steel were analyzed through finite element analysis with the aid of commercial finite element analysis program DIANA; the difference in their structural behavior such as deflection, joint opening, and stress distribution was then evaluated. Twenty-node brick elements and three-node beam elements were used to model concrete and steel, respectively. Sub-layers were modeled with horizontal and vertical tensionless spring elements. The interactions between steel and surrounding concrete were considered by connecting their nodes with three orthogonal spring elements. Both wheel loading and environmental loading in addition to self-weight were considered. RESULTS : The use of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements does not have significant effects on the structural behavior. The surface deflections change very little with the use of transverse steel. The joint opening decreases when transverse steel is used but the reduction is quite small. The transverse concrete stress, rather, increases when transverse steel is used due to the restraint exerted by the steel but the increase is quite small as well. CONCLUSIONS : The main role of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements is supporting longitudinal steel and/or controlling unexpected longitudinal cracks rather than enhancing the structural capacity.

  • In the present study, a new kind of multivariable Reissner-Mindlin plate elements with two kinds of variables based on B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) is constructed to solve the static and vibration problems of a square Reissner-Mindlin plate, a skew Reissner-Mindlin plate, and a Reissner-Mindlin plate on an elastic foundation. Based on generalized variational principle, finite element formulations are derived from generalized potential energy functional. The two-dimensional tensor product BSWI is employed to form the shape functions and construct multivariable BSWI elements. The multivariable wavelet finite element method proposed here can improve the solving accuracy apparently because generalized stress and strain are interpolated separately. In addition, compared with commonly used Daubechies wavelet finite element method, BSWI has explicit expression and a very good approximation property which guarantee the satisfying results. The efficiency of the proposed multivariable Reissner-Mindlin plate elements are verified through some numerical examples in the end.

  • In the present paper, development of the three-dimensional (3D) computational code based on Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) for solving the multigroup forward/adjoint diffusion equation in both rectangular and hexagonal geometries is reported. Linear approximation of shape functions in the GFEM with unstructured tetrahedron elements is used in the calculation. Both criticality and fixed source calculations may be performed using the developed GFEM-3D computational code. An acceptable level of accuracy at a low computational cost is the main advantage of applying the unstructured tetrahedron elements. The unstructured tetrahedron elements generated with Gambit software are used in the GFEM-3D computational code through a developed interface. The forward/adjoint multiplication factor, forward/adjoint flux distribution, and power distribution in the reactor core are calculated using the power iteration method. Criticality calculations are benchmarked against the valid solution of the neutron diffusion equation for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-3D and Water-Water Energetic Reactor (VVER)-1000 reactor cores. In addition, validation of the calculations against the $P_1$ approximation of the transport theory is investigated in relation to the liquid metal fast breeder reactor benchmark problem. The neutron fixed source calculations are benchmarked through a comparison with the results obtained from similar computational codes. Finally, an analysis of the sensitivity of calculations to the number of elements is performed.

  • This paper presents a computer program for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis. With this computer program the fluid can be modeled by a spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid element which uses rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and near field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil is represented by the frequency dependent dynamic infinite elements. Sine this method models directly the fluid-structure-soil system it can be applied to the dynamci analysis of 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. For the purpose of verification dynamic analyses for tanks on a rigid foundation and on compliant embankment are carried out. Comparison of the present results with those by ANSYS program shows good agreement.

  • An automatic mesh generation scheme has been developed for finite element analysis with two-dimensional, quadrilateral elements. The basic strategies of the method are to transform the analysis domain into loops with key nodes and the loops are recursively subdivided into subloops with the use of best split lines. Finally by using the basic loop operators, the meshes are completed. In this algorithm an eight-node loop operator is proposed, which is useful in the area where the change of element size is large and the splitting criteria for subdividing the loops have also been modified to the existing algorithms. Lines, arcs, and cubic spline curves are used to define the boundaries of analysis domain. Sample meshes for several geometries are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm.

  • This paper is focused on the buckling and post buckling behaviour of rectangular corrugated board panels simply supported and subjected to compression load. The aim of the work is to understand the failure mechanism of investigated structure in order to quantify the effect of design parameters on the strength of a panel of given geometry. Two numerical models were developed adopting the finite element method. In the first one the corrugated board is represented by means of shell elements adopting an equivalent material, in the second the local structure is described in full detail modelling both straight and corrugated layers by means of shell elements and representing the connection between layers by special interface elements. The model correctness was checked by the comparison between out of plane central displacement predicted by the models and the experimental values found in literature. For the same case the effect of panel planarity error was evaluated. Finally a parametric analysis to investigate the effect of design parameters was carried out.

  • It has previously been proposed that the yield-line method of analysis for reinforced concrete slabs could be automated via the use of rigid finite elements, assuming all deformations occur along element edges. However, the solutions obtained using this approach can be observed to be highly sensitive to mesh topology. To address this, a revised formulation that incorporates modified yield criteria to account for the presence of non-zero shear forces at interfaces between elements is proposed. The resulting formulation remains simple, with linear programming (LP) still used to obtain solutions for problems involving Johansen's square yield criteria. The results obtained are shown to agree well with literature solutions for various slab problems involving uniform loading and a range of geometries and boundary conditions.
