Stress Intensity Factor Analysis of Nozzle Considering Pressure and Heat Transfer on Crack Face (균열면에 작용하는 내압과 열전달의 영향을 고려한 노즐부의 응력확대계수 해석)

  • In order to investigate the effect of nozzle on stress concentration in pressure vessels, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed. The results were compared with those for corresponding two dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses. A three dimensional finite element model with a surface crack was also designed to evaluate the effect of internal pressure and heat transfer on crack face, and the resulting stress intensity factors from the finite element analyses were compared with those for ASME Sec. XI and Raju-Newman's stress intensity factor solution. As a result, the validity of currently available stress intensity factor solutions for a surface crack was reviewed in the presence of geometrical complexity, heat transfer and internal pressure.

  • This study is performed to understand three dimensional characteristics of weld residual stress for the surface weld on the stainless steel plate. AISI 304 plate with one path weld on the surface was used as a test specimen. Finite element analysis was done to analyze thermal transient and residual stress due to weld. The result of finite element analysis was validated by previous paper and measurement data. Among various techniques for residual stress measurement, instrumented ball indentation method was applied. The calculated residual stresses by finite element analysis showed good agreement with the measured results.

Effects of Drilling Degrees of Freedom in the Finite Element Modeling of P- and SV-wave Scattering Problems

  • This paper deals with a hybrid finite element method for wave scattering problems in infinite domains. Scattering of waves involving complex geometries, in conjunction with infinite domains is modeled by introducing a mathematical boundary within which a finite element representation is employed. On the mathematical boundary, the finite element representation is matched with a known analytical solution in the infinite domain in terms of fields and their derivatives. The derivative continuity is implemented by using a slope constraint. Drilling degrees of freedom at each node of the finite element model are introduced to make the numerical model more sensitive to the transverse component of the elastodynamic field. To verify the effects of drilling degrees freedom and slope constraints individually, reflection of normally incident P and SV waves on a traction free half spaces is considered. For the P-wave incidence, the results indicate that the use of slope constraint is more effective because it suppresses artificial reflection at the mathematical boundary. For the SV-wave case, the use of drilling degrees freedom is more effective by reducing numerical error at irregular frequencies.

  • A finite element interface system for the design of optimal spot welding locations has been developed. In order to find out the optimal locations of spot welding points, iterative finite element an alyses are necessary, and thus automatic generation of finite element model for the structures with spot welded pointsis required. In this interface system, quadrilateral shell elements are automatically generated for finite element analysis of spot welded structured, which employs a domain decomposition methodand adaptive mesh(h-method).

  • The mechanical structures generally have discontinuous parts such as the cracks, notches and holes owing to various reasons. In this paper, in order to analyze effectively these singularity problems using the finite element method, a mixed analysis method which an analytical solution and finite element solutions are simultaneously used is newly proposed. As the analytical solution is used in the singularity region and the finite element solutions are used in the remaining regions except this singular zone, this analysis method reasonably provides for the numerical solution of a singularity problem. Through various numerical examples, it is shown that the proposed analysis method is very convenient and gives comparatively accurate solution.

  • An Eulerian finite element method for the analysis of steady state rolling/extrusion of sintered powder metals is presented. Initial guess of the porosity distribution in an Eulerian mesh is obtained from the velocity and scaled pressure field computed by the Consistent Penalty finite element formulations-the standard one and the consistent penalty type one-are invoked for the analysis of strain hardening, dilatant viscoplastic deformation of porous metals. Comparisons of the predicted distributions of porosity to those by a Lagrangian finite element method and by experiments reported in the articles prove the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method.

  • TPE is used as alternative for rubber, the best example is the weather strip for automobile. The nonlinear material properties of weather strip were important to predict the behaviors of weather strip. Uniaxial tension and equi-biaxial tension tests were performed to achieve the nonlinear material constant and stress-strain curves. The nonlinear material constant of weather strip is evaluated by using the nonlinear finite element analysis. In this paper, the prediction for weather strip is analyzed by using commercial finite element program, ANSYS. The nonlinear finite element analysis of weather strip is executed to predict the behavior of weather strip for automobile.

A Development of Finite Element Model on Jet Loom Structures for the Improvement of Dynamic Characteristics (동특성 개선을 위한 제트직기 구조물의 유한요소모델 개발)

  • Since many reciprocating and rotating components are attached to jet loom structure. it is exposed to a more vibration and moise problems than the other textile machinery. Thus the design of the jet loom frame is very important to characterize the dynamic response. In this study, a finite element model of jet loom main frame was developed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of jet loom. Two different finite element models of different main frames were constructed and these models were validated by the experimental results. Dynamic characteristics such natural frequencies and mode shapes were in good agreement between the finite element analysis and experimental results within 10% error range. It is expected that the result from this study can be used as the basic information of jet loom dynamic analysis and be extended for further analysis of forced response case.

  • In this paper, efficient and accurate contact search algorithm is proposed for the contact problems by the finite element method. A slave node and a maser contact segment is defined using the side of a finite element on the contact surface. The specific goal is to develop techniques of reducing the nonsmoothness of the contact interactions arising from the finite element discretization of the contact surface. Contact detection is accomplished by monitoring the territory of the slave nodes throughout the calculation for possible penetration of a master surface. To establish the validity of the proposed algorithm, some different process and geometries examples were simulated. Efforts are focused on the error rate that is based on the penetrated area through the simulations fur large deformation with contact surface between deformable bodies. A proposed algorithm offers improvements in contact detection from the simulation results.

  • This paper introduces a CAE-based design procedure in the press forming process for the fabrication of sheet metal parts used in proto-cars. The finite element analysis reveals formability problems during the forming process of a floor member and a front cross member that constitute a rear floor assembly. The study proposes the modification of the initial blank shape or intermediate trimming of the product to prevent failure during forming. It is confirmed by the tryout process as well as the finite element analysis that sound prototype can be obtained with the modified design. The finite element analysis result also provides fairly good prediction of springback amounts used for the post-compensation of the product.
