  • Based on continuum mechanics and the principle of virtual displacements, incremental total Lagrangian formulation (T.L.) and incremental updated Lagrangian formulation (U.L.) were presented. Both T.L. and U.L. considered the large displacement stiffness matrix, which was modified to be symmetrical matrix. According to the incremental updated Lagrangian formulation, small strain, large displacement, finite rotation of three dimensional Timoshenko fiber beam element tangent stiffness matrix was developed. Considering large displacement and finite rotation, a new type of tangent stiffness matrix of the beam element was developed. According to the basic assumption of plane section, the displacement field of an arbitrary fiber was presented in terms of nodal displacement of centroid of cross-area. In addition, shear deformation effect was taken account. Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element method program has been developed and several examples were tested to demonstrate the accuracy and generality of the three dimensional beam element.

  • In order to evaluate the integrity of nuclear power plants, J-integral calculation is crucial. For this purpose, finite element method is popularly used to obtain J-integral. However, high cost time consuming preprocess should be performed to design the finite element model of a cracked structure. Also, the J-integral should be verified by alternative method since it may differ depending on the calculation method. The objective of this paper is to develop a three-dimensional elastic-plastic J-integral analysis system which is named as EPAS. The EPAS program consists of an automatic mesh generator for a through-wall crack and a surface crack, a solver based on ABAQUS program, and a J-integral calculation program which provides DI(Domain Integral) and EDI(Equivalent Domain Integral) based J-integral calculation. Using the EPAS program, an optimized finite element model for a cracked structure can be generated and corresponding J-integral can be obtained subsequently.

  • This paper presents a formulation to include the prestressing effects in available numerical models for the nonlinear material, instantaneous and long-term analysis of prestressed concrete shell structures, based on the displacement formulation of the finite element method. A four-node flat shell element is adopted for nonlinear analysis of prestressed concrete shells. This element was incorporated into an existing general-purpose finite element analysis program. A distinctive characteristic of the element is its capability to simulate the behavior of shells subjected to a variety of types of loading and drilling rotational stiffness. Consequently, the response of prestressed concrete shell structures can be predicted accurately using the proposed nonlinear finite element procedure.

  • The finite leement method is a effetive analysis technique for obtaining approximate solutions of continuum problems with boundary conditions. This paper deals with the programming for the application of this method and the preciser analysis of the magnetic field in the air gap of the linear stepper motor by the method. The finite element analysis based on the variational principle is adopted and the computer program for reducing input data and a large number of the memory words required by the system matrix is presented. The 2-dimensional analysis of the air gap is made and several cases according to varying the position are considered.

  • Steam turbine rotors are the most critical and highly stressed components of a steam power plant; therefore, the life expectancy of the turbine rotor is an important consideration for the safety of a steam power plant. The objective of this paper is to develop a life estimation program for turbine rotors for all possible operating conditions. For this purpose, finite element analysis was carried out for four normal operating modes (cold, warm, hot and very hot starts) using ABAQUS codes. The results are made into databases to evaluate the life expenditure for an actual operating condition. For any other possible abnormal operating condition, the operating data are transmitted to the server (workstation) through a network to carry out finite element analysis. Damage estimation is carried out by transmitting the finite element analysis results to the personal computer, and then the life expectancy is calculated.

  • This paper is the study on stress analysis for tooth modification of high speed gear using a finite element method. Gear drives constitute very important mechanisms in transmitting mechanical power processes compromising several cost effective and engineering advantages. The load transmission occurred by the contacting surfaces arises variable elastic deformations which are being evaluated through finite element analysis. The automatic gear design program is developed to model gear shape precisely. This gear design system developed was used by pre-processor of FEM packages. The distribution of stresses at contacting surfaces was examined when gear tooth contacts. And this paper proposes method for the tooth modification after carrying out stress analysis using a finite element method.

  • Effective properties of ceramic matrix plain woven textile composites were calculated using finite element analysis. The considered geometry is a unit cell of plain weave and the analysis was performed by commercial finite element program, ANSYS. The materials for analysis are 3 types for matrix, 1 type for fiber with various volume fraction. The result indicates that the effective properties of ceramic matrix composites can be controlled by the volume fraction. The result can be used for numerical analysis using ceramic matrix composites.

  • A thermo-viscoplastic finite element program was developed to analyze the compression molding of SMC process. Deformation of the material was modelled by using the flow-rule. Heat balance during the process was coupled to the deformation. In the cure study, a kinetic model was adopted to describe the cure behavior. The numerical kinetic model was integrated with the thermo-viscoplastic numerical analysis by adding heat generation due to the chemical reaction of the workpiece in the heat transfer analysis. The integrated finite element program can simulate a whole sequential molding process including deformation, heat transfer, and chemical reaction. A practical SMC molding process with T-shaped substructure was simulated. The simulated results showed good agreements with experiments.

  • In this study, a stochastic finite element model is proposed with a view to consider the uncertainty of physical properties of discontinuous rock mass in the analysis of structural behavior on underground caverns. In so doing, the LHS(Latin Hypercube sampling) technique has been applied to make up weak points of the Crude Monte Carlo technique. Concerning the effect of discontinuities, a joint finite element model is used that is known to be superior in explaining faults, cleavage, things of that nature. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, the variables such as the the elastic modulus, the poisson's ratio, the joint shear stiffness, and the joint normal stiffness have been used, all of which can be applicable through normal distribution, log-normal distribution, and rectangulary uniform distribution. The validity of the newly developed computer program has been confirmed in terms of verification examples. And, the applicability of the program has been tested in terms of the analysis of the circular cavern in discontinuous rock mass.
