Biomechanical behavior of the human femur is very important in various clinical situations. In this study, the data of FE models based on DICOM file exported from Computed tomography(CT). We generated FE models(voxel model, tetra model) of human femur using CT slide image. We compared them with Yon Mises stress results derived from finite element analysis(FEA). Comparing the two models, we found a correlation of them. As a result, the tetra model based proposed marching cube algorithm is a valid and accurate method to predict parameters of the complex biomechanical behavior of human femur.

Finite element analysis was performed to analyze structural safety of a new heavy-duty direct injection diesel engine. A half section of the in-line 6-cylinder engine was selected as a computational domain. A mapping method was used to project heat transfer coefficients from CFD results of engine coolant flow onto the FE model. The accurate setting of thermal boundary condition on the FE model was expected to result in improved prediction of temperature, cylinder bore distortion, and stresses. Characteristics of high cycle fatigue were investigated by assuming the engine was operated under the following five loading conditions repeatedly; assembly force, assembly force with thermal loading, alternating maximum gas pressure loading at each cylinder combined with assembly force and thermal loading. Distribution of fatigue safety factor was calculated by using it Haigh diagram in which the maximum and the minimum stresses were selected from the five loading cases.

Finite element analysis is frequently used to get dynamic characteristics of complex structures. Since the results often show differences from experimentally measured ones, updating of finite element models is performed to make the FE results agree with measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use frequency response function data. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method using simulated and experimental data for a cantilever beam. Damping effect is included in FE models, and FRFs for rotational displacements are calculated from FRFs for translational displacements using interpolation.
This study investigates to provide a fast solution to the problem of bearing capacity in layered soils with easily obtainable parameters that does not require the use of any charts or calculations of different parameters. Therefore, a hybrid approach including both the finite element (FE) method and machine learning technique have been applied. Firstly, a FE model has been generated which is validated by the results of in-situ loading tests. Then, a total of 192 three-dimensional FE analyses have been performed. A data set has been created utilizing the soil properties, footing sizes, layered conditions used in the FE analyses and the ultimate bearing capacity values obtained from the FE analyses to be used in multigene genetic programming (MGGP). Problem has been modeled with five input and one output parameter to propose a bearing capacity formula. Ultimate bearing capacity values estimated from the proposed formula using data set consisting of 20 data independent of total data set used in MGGP modelling have been compared to the bearing capacities calculated with semi-empirical methods. It was observed that the MGGP method yielded successful results for the problem considered. The proposed formula provides reasonable predictions and efficient enough to be used in practice.

The major objective of the present paper is to develop a channel cutting machine and to establish an analytical technique for actual shearing process. Isothermal finite element(FE)-simulation of the shearing process are carried out using FE software DEFORM. The element-kill method has enabled the achievement of FE-simulation from the initial stage to the final stage of the shearing process. The effects of the punch-die clearance on the shearing process are investigated.

This paper describes an automatic finite element(FE) mesh generation for three-dimensional structures consisting of free-form surfaces. This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid and shell structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional solid and shell structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.

In this paper, the residual stresses for the wide-band laser heat treatment using a polygon mirror have been analyzed. The results of FE analysis are compared with the experimental results. ANSYS Version 5.3, a commercial FE-code, is used for the FE stress analysis. The structural analysis was performed on after thermal analysis. The residual stress distribution across the hardened area was measured by the X-ray diffraction technique. The laser hardening conditions, 2kW laser power and 2mm/s travel speed, were used for the experiment and the FE analysis. Analysis results, which is maximum tensile residual stress is about 143MPa and maximum compressive residual stress is about -380MPa. Under same parameters with the analysis, experimental results indicate that MTRS is about 152MPa and MCRS is about -312MPa. The experimental results is about 6% higher than the FE analysis. As a result, residual stress data from the experiment close well with that of the FE analysis.

The virbration characteristics of a passenger car steering column are studied by using a modal test and a finite element (FE) analysis. To verify the FE model and the results, an experiment using the impact exciting method is performed. Two types of the steering column in this study are considered as follows; (ⅰ) the non-tilt type steering column and (ⅱ) the upper-tilt type steering column. The experimental results are compared with those o the FE analysis, and it ti shown that the results agree with each other. The effects of various design parameters such as the bracket thickness, the column diameter on the natural frequencies are also investigated by FE analysis.

To solve the 3D eddy current problems by using FE(finite element) method with MVP(magnetic vector potential) and electric scalar potential, Coulomb gauge condition and current continuity condition have to be considered. Coulomb gauge condition enforced on existing FE formulations to insure the uniqueness of MVP looks unnatural and current continuity condition which can be driven from Ampere's law looks unnecessary. So in this paper the effect of two conditions on FE formulations are investigated in order to help to obtain accurate numerical simulation results.
