  • This paper presents a 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method used for indoor propagation simulations where the electromagnetic wav eis uniformly excited on th eone of the wall in a building and affected by an indoor obstacles. In cases of simulation and measurement, the frequency of 851 MHz is used. The conductivities of walls, floor, ceiling and indoor obstacles are measured and used for simulations. These simulations are carried out using different boundary condition such as mur's absorbing boundary condition (ABC) and perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. The PML technique is found to be well-suited to this analysis because of it's smaller computational domain than mur's ABC. The measured signal strengths are compared to simulated values with good agreement.

  • In this paper, the higher order FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to obtain the frequency response characteristics of the cylindrical metamaterial slab. FDTD method is one of strongest electromagnetic numerical method which is widely used to analyze the metamaterial structure because of its simplicity and the dispersive FDTD equation which has the dispersive effective dielectric constant and permeability are derived to analyze the metamaterials. This derived dispersive FDTD equation has no errors in analyzing the dielectric materials but there are some time and frequency errors in case of analyzing the metamaterials. We used the higher order FDTD method to obtain the accurate frequency response of the metamaterials. Comparisons between the dispersive FDTD method and the higher order FDTD method are performed in this paper also. From the results, we concluded that more accurate frequency response for various metamaterials applications can be obtained using the proposed method in this paper.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the frequency characteristics and the crosstalk of the adjacent parallel lines and the crossed lines in high-speed packaging interconnections by using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D FDTD) method. To analyze the actual crosstalk phenomena in the transmission of the high-speed digital sgnal, the step pulse with fast rise time was used for the source excitation signal instead of using the Gaussian pulse that is generally used in FDTD. To veify the theoretical resutls, the experimental interconnection lines that were fabricated on the Duroid substrate($\varepsilon_{r}$=2.33, h=0.787 [mm]) were tested by TDR(time domain reflectometry). The results show good agreement between the analyzed results and the tested outcomes.

  • Delay-sum back projection(DSBP) algorithm and the time reversal algorithm based on the finite-difference time-domain method are compared. The two algorithms, which operate in the time domain, can process the ultra-wideband (UWB) radar data to generate images that are close to the original location and shape of the target. For the experiment, the UWB radar consists of a network analyzer, a resistive V dipole antenna, a scanner, and a control computer. The radar aperture is synthesized by linearly scanning the antenna. A calibration procedure is applied to the measured data to remove signal distortion and clutter. The two algorithms are applied to the same data on the same platform. It is shown that the DSBP algorithm produces better images but takes longer time to produce the images than the FDTD-TR algorithm.

  • Using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method that analyzes the Maxwell equations in time domain, we simulated the characteristics of optical wave propagation and defect modes in two-dimensional photonic crystals composed of dielectric cylinders located on triangular, square, and honeycomb lattices. In particular, we investigated the properties of defect modes as the permittvity of the defects is varied. aried.

  • In this paper, we studied efficient modeling strategies when we simulate the 3D time-domain acoustic wave propagation using a cell-based finite difference method which can handle the variations of both P-wave velocity and density. The standard finite difference method assigns physical properties such as velocities of elastic waves and density to grid points; on the other hand, the cell-based finite difference method assigns physical properties to cells between grid points. The cell-based finite difference method uses average physical properties of adjacent cells to calculate the finite difference equation centered at a grid point. This feature increases the computational cost of the cell-based finite difference method compared to the standard finite different method. In this study, we used additional memory to mitigate the computational overburden and thus reduced the calculation time by more than 30 %. Furthermore, we were able to enhance the performance of the modeling on several media with limited density variations by using the cell-based and standard finite difference methods together.

  • In the present paper, the sloshing flow in the liquid holds of a large tanker is simulated using a numerical method. In the fluid domain, the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with free surface is solved using a finite difference method, and the realistic shapes of multi holds are modeled including the internal members. The time-history of the tank motion is obtained using a time-domain program for ship motion. In order to computer the impulsive pressures on internal structures, a concept of buffer zone is adopted near the tank ceiling during impact occurrence. This study demonstrates that the global fluid motion in the multi liquid holds of ships and FPSO's can be simulated using the numerical method and the corresponding local pressure can be predicted with reasonable accuracy.

  • We perform a electromagnetic analysis method for indirect effects of a high-conductive structure such as an aircraft exposed by lightning, by using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. The lightning waveform used to analyze indirect effects has low frequency spectrum and high-conductive materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber composite materials have very short skin depths, and thus, it requires large memory and long computation time using conventional three dimensional FDTD analysis method. We develop an efficient electromagnetic analysis method suitable for lightning and high-conductive structures. The developed analysis method is based on two dimensional FDTD and impedance network boundary condition(INBC) algorithms and we investigate the indirect effects on the structures exposed to lightning.
