The present study aims to generate turbulent inflow data to more accurately represent the turbulent flow around a square cylinder when the inflow turbulence level is significant. The modified random flow generation (RFG) technique in conjunction with a previously developed LES code is successfully adopted into a finite element based fluid flow solver to generate the required inflow turbulence boundary conditions for the three-dimensional (3-D) LES computations of transitional turbulent flow around a square cylinder at Reynolds number of 22,000. The near wall region is modelled without using wall approximate conditions and a wall damping coefficient is introduced into the calculation of sub-grid length scale in the boundary layer of the cylinder wall. The numerical results obtained from simulations are compared with each other and with the experimental data for different inflow turbulence boundary conditions in order to discuss the issues such as the synthetic inflow turbulence effects on the 3-D transitional flow behaviour in the near wake and the free shear layer, the basic mechanism by which stream turbulence interacts with the mean flow over the cylinder body and the prediction of integral flow parameters. The comparison among the LES results with and without inflow turbulence and the experimental data emphasizes that the turbulent inflow data generated by the present RFG technique for the LES computation can be a viable approach in accurately predicting the effects of inflow turbulence on the near wake turbulent flow characteristics around a bluff body.
Oil-Hydraulic pump consisting of swing twin-cylinder becomes to be used as a next generation of low vacuum pump. However, there is no enough flow-analysis for design improvement. It is essential to develope a numerical method for flow-analysis before manufacturing, in economic sense. Using a commercial code (Fluent), developed for flow-analysis, useful informations for design of pump were provided. Two-dimensional analysis has been performed to investigate the flow parameters such as pressure and velocity distributions between the swing twin-cylinder and the fixed cylinder. This numerical method will be used to design a better performance of pump consisting of swing twin-cylinder.

The effect of rotation on the unsteady laminar flaw past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. The numerical solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equation obtained, using two different numerical methods. One is an accurate spectral method and the other is a finite volume method(FVM). First, the flaw around a stationary circular cylinder is investigated to understand the basic phenomenon of flaw separation and bluff body wake. Next, the flow characteristics of the laminar flow, past a rotating circular cylinder, are investigated, using a FVM developed in this study. By the effect of rotation, it is seen that values of lift increase, while the values of mean drag decrease. Further, the criteria of angular velocity, at which the Karman vorteces disappear, is also determined.

This paper presents the results of an extensive numerical analysis program devoted to the investigation of the mechanical behaviour of bolted ball-cylinder joints. The analysis program is developed by means of finite element (FE) models implemented in the non-linear code ABAQUS. The FE models have been accurately calibrated on the basis of available experimental results. It is indicated that the FE models could be used effectively to describe the mechanical performance of bolted ball-cylinder joints, including failure modes, stress distributions and load-displacement curves. Therefore, the proposed FE models could be regarded as an efficient and accurate tool to investigate the mechanical behavior of bolted ball-cylinder joints. In addition, to develop a further investigation, parametric studies were performed, varying the dimensions of hollow cylinders, rectangular tubes, convex washers and ribbed stiffener. It is found that the dimensions of hollow cylinders, rectangular tubes and ribbed stiffener influenced the mechanical behaviour of bolted ball-cylinder joints significantly. On the contrary, the effects of the dimensions of convex washers were negligible.

Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis of a circular cylinder surrounded by incompressible turbulent flow is presented. The fluid flow is modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with large-eddy simulation for turbulent vortical flows. The circular cylinder is modeled as elastic continuum described by elasto-dynamic equation of motion. Finite element method based approach is utilized for unified formulation of fluid-structure interaction analysis. The magnitude and frequency of structural response is analysed in comparison to the driving fluid forces.

In this study, we simulate the aerodynamic sounds generated by a two-dimensional circular cylinder in a uniform flow are simulated by applying the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). The third-order-accurate up-wind scheme (UTOPIA) is used for the spatial derivatives. and the second-order-accurate Runge-Kutta scheme is applied for the time marching. The results show that we successively capture very small acoustic pressure fluctuations with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street compared with the Pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder The propagation velocity of the acoustic waves shows that the points of peak pressure are biased upstream due to the Doppler effect in the uniform flow For the downstream. on the other hand. it quickly Propagates. It is also apparent that the amplitude of sound Pressure is Proportional to $r^{-1/2}$, r being the distance from the center of the circular cylinder. To investigate the effect of the lattice dependence furthermore a 2D computation of the tone noise radiated by a NACA0012 with a blunt trailing edge at high incidence and low Reynolds number is also investigated.
In this paper, constraint-based fracture mechanics analyses of hollow cylinders with internal circumferential crack under tensile loading are conducted. Finite element analyses of the cracked cylinders are carried out to determine the fracture parameters including elastic T-stresses, and fully-plastic J-integrals. Linear elastic finite element analysis is conducted to obtain the T-stresses, and elastic-plastic analysis is conducted to obtain the fully plastic J-integrals. A wide range of cylinder geometries are studied, with cylinder radius ratios of $r_i/r_o$ = 0.2 to 0.8 and crack depth ratio a/t = 0.2 to 0.8. Fully plastic J-integrals are obtained for Ramberg-Osgood power law hardening material of n = 3, 5 and 10. These fracture parameters are then used to construct conventional and constraint-based failure assessment diagrams (FADs) to determine the maximum load carrying capacity of cracked cylinders. It is demonstrated that these tensile loaded cylinders with circumferential cracks are under low constraint conditions, and the load carrying capacity are higher when the low constraint effects are properly accounted for, using constraint-based FADs, comparing to the predictions from the conventional FADs.

Piston seal is a device designed to prevent leakage in split connecctions or between relatively moving part. Contact force, critical pressure at which extrusion occurs, leakage rate, fluid film thickness and friction force have been analyzed for some design parameter such as clearance between cylinder wall piston, depth of rectangular groove and pressure of sealed hydraulic fluid. In this paper, we analyze displacement and stress of Wearing by finite element analysis to understand Contact Behaviour Characters.
The purpose of this study was to develop the implant which has superior stress distribution and primary stability to others by using Instron test and finite element method. The model used in the experiment were cylinder type implant, tapered screw type implant, screw type implants. Recognizing that the number of samples were small and the lack of applying press-fit conditions to the cylinder type, we can make the following conclusions.
Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow around rectangular cylinders with various side ratios, D/H, from 0.2 to 2.0 is carried out for Reynolds number of 1000 by using multi-directional finite difference method in multi-grid. The predicted results are well compared with the experimental data. It is found that fluid dynamics characteristics alternate between high pressure mode. and low pressure mode of the base pressure for rectangular cylinder of D/H=0.2-0.6.
