The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire modus: Zone model and Field model. The zone mode used is the CFAST(version 1.6) mode developed at the Building and Fire Research laboratories, NIST in the USA. The lied model is a self-developed fire field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fro-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i. e. Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for Ire clear height and the smoke layer temperature.

For solving the liked set of velocity and pressure equation, the PISO algorithm, which strengthened the velocity-pressure coupling, was used. Since PISO algorithm is a time-marching procedure, computing time si very fast. A numerical procedure is described for predicting the motion and structural responses of the very large floating offshore structures supported by multiple 3-D floating bodies of arbitrary shape in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach taking into account of the hydrodynamic interactions among the multiple floating bodies is based on a combination of the 3-D source distribution method, the wave interaction theory, the finite element method and the spectral analysis method to get the significant values of the dynamic responses in the multi-directional irregular waves. The effects of wave interactions and directionality on the dynamic responses of a very large offshore structure, which is semisubmersible ring type, are numerically examined.
Many mathematical techniques have been developed to determine the muscle forces and force distribution in biomechanical human model, because it is so important to understand internal forces resisting external loading. However, a three-dimensional mathematical model of wrist joint, which is essential to develop solid modeling and artificial wrist joint, has not been well developed. This study proposed to define three-dimensional mathematical model of distal radius and ulna of the human wrist and to develop a detailed two-dimensional finite element through comparisons to existing analytical models and experimental tests. This mathematical model were accurately recreated, allowing the internal tendon force as well as force transmission and distribution through the distal radios and ulna during dynamic loadings. The results found in this study indicate and support the findings of other investigator that cyclic loading condition results in higher compression force on distal radius and ulna and may be source of wrist disorder.

In this paper, the optimum shape design of stator slot of induction motors for iron loss reduction is proposed. To obtain the flux distribution in induction motors, 2-D finite element method with voltage source is employed. The iron loss is calculated from the iron loss data given by the iron manufacturer. To calculate the sensitivity of iron loss to shape variation, the sensitivity analysis of discrete approach is used. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-phase squirrel cage induction motor. The nodes at stator slot boundary of the induction motor are defined as design parameters. By controlling these parameters under the constant volume of iron, we can minimize the iron loss. Furthermore, the stator copper loss is reduced by increasing the slot area. So the stator slot area is determined at the point that the summation of iron loss and copper loss of stator is minimized. Since the constraint of constant volume of iron is nonlinear to the design parameters, the Gradient Projection method is used as an optimization algorithm.

For constructing the steel structures of ship and automobiles etc, thin plate welding has been extensively used in recent years. However. the welding of plate produces welding deformation and residual stress which sometimes extremely harm to the safty of structure in the course of construction and operation. Therefore, in order to accurately prediet the welding deformation and residual stress, it is important to exactly analyze the distribution of temperature during welding in thin plate and take into account the moving effect of the heat source. In this paper, two dimensional unstationary heat conduction problemes of thin plate are formulated using an isoparametric finite element. After the development of the computer program, this method is applied to some specimens, and the analyzed results are compared with the experimental ones to confirm the usefulness of this method.

Self-potential (SP) is sensitive to groundwater flow and there are many causes to generate SP. Among many mechanisms of SP, pore-fluid flow in porous media can generate potential without any external current source, which is referred to as electrokinetic potential or streaming potential. When calculating SP responses on the surface due to geothermal fluid within an engineered geothermal system (EGS) reservoir, SP anomaly is usually considered to be generated by fluid injection or production within the reservoir. However, SP anomaly can also result from geothermal water fluid within EGS reservoirs experiencing temperature changes between injection and production wells. For more precise simulation of SP responses, we developed an algorithm being able to take account of SP anomalies produced by not only water injection and production but also the fluid of geothermal water, based on three-dimensional finite-element-method employing tetrahedron elements; the developed algorithm can simulate electrical potential responses by both point source and volume source. After verifying the developed algorithm, we assumed a simple geothermal reservoir model and analyzed SP responses caused by geothermal water injection and production. We are going to further analyze SP responses for geothermal water in the presence of water production and injection, considering temperature distribution and geothermal water flow in the following research.

SPT-Uphole tomography method was introduced for the evaluation of near subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution map. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in geotechnical site investigation was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. Vs distribution map which is the triangular shape around the boring point can be developed by tomography inversion. To obtain the exact travel time information of shear wave component, a procedure using the magnitude summation of vertical and horizontal components was used based on the evaluation of particle motion at the surface. It was verified that proposed method could give reliable Vs distribution map through the numerical study using the FEM (Finite Element Method) model. Finally, SPT-Uphole tomography method was performed at the weathered soil site where several boring data with SPT-N values are available, and the feasibility of proposed method was verified in the field.

Any relative deformation between the cutting tool and the workpiece at the machining point, results directly in form and dimensional errors. The source of relative deformations between the cutting tool and the workpiece at the contact point may be due to thermal, weight, and cutting forces. This paper presents an investigation into dry and fluid machining with the objective of evaluating shape accuracy effect for the turning process of Al6061. The thermal distribution of cutting tool and cutting force was predicted using finite element method after measuring the temperature of the tool holder. To reach this goal, shape accuracy turning experiments are carried out according to cutting conditions with dry and fluid machining methods. The variable cutting conditions are cutting speed, depth of cutting and feed rate.

For the numerical computation of three-dimensional compressible flow field within a blade row in a centrifugal compressor, a quasi 3-dimensional solver which combines a reversible B-B flow and an irreversible H-S flow using finite element methods was developed. In a reversible B-B flow, the governing coordinates are modified in order to be applied to any type of turbomachinery, and two kinds of stream functions are introduced in order to make the Kutta condition exactly satisfied. In an irreversible H-S flow, the changes of entropy in the irreversible governing equations are determined not by empirical source but by the theoretical treatment of dissipation forces. The dissipation forces are obtained from the distribution of shear stresses in the flow passage which are given from the wall shear stresses using the exponential functions. A more accurate quasi-3-dimensional solver is established where the effect of body forces is involved in the non-axisymmetric H-S flow. Some numerical results obtained from authors' previous studies for axial flow machines assure that the present method is able to predict well as long as the flow is subsonic and not under strong viscous effect.
