To analyze the behavior of a soil beam under pore water pressure, the results of analytical solutions and finite element analysis (FEM) were compared quantitatively. In contrast to the results of the analytical solution, the horizontal stress obtained from the FEM did not show a symmetrical distribution. On the other hand, the horizontal stress became closer to symmetrical distribution as the number of elements of the soil beam were increased. A comparison of the horizontal stresses from the analytic solution with those obtained from Gaussian points of FEM showed that the magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 3 elements was 6% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the compressive stress from the FEM using the same elements was 37% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. The magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 6 elements was 61% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the compressive stress from the FEM using the elements was 83% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. Vertical stresses, which were obtained from the analytical solution, showed a continuous distribution with the depth of the soil beam, whereas the vertical stresses from the FEM showed a discrete distribution corresponding to each element. The results also showed that the average value of the vertical stresses of each element was close to that of the pore water pressure. A comparison of the vertical displacements computed at the near vertical center line of the soil beam from the FEM with those of the analytical solution showed that the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 3 elements was 35% of the value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 6 elements was 57% of the value of the analytical solution.

This study presents the shape iteration method and the updated Lagrangian methods to calculate the initial tension and the reference length of cables of cable-stayed bridges. The girders and towers of cable-stayed bridge are modelled as 3-dimensional frame elements and the cable as nonlinear truss element or Ernst's cable element. Compared with the initial tensions of cables by finite element method in this study and by trial-and error method in practices, the tensions by the former are shown to be a little less than the those by the latter. The reference lengths of cables by Ernst's cable elements are almost consistent with those of cables by nonlinear truss elements. And the reference length of cables in this study are almost consistent with the arc length of beam with the same initial tension. Therefore the reference lengths of cables in cable-stayed bridges are shown to be obtained simply by the theory of beam with the initial tension calculated in this study.

Conventional seismic design of concentrically braced frame (CBF) structures suggests that the gusset plate connecting a steel brace to beams and/or columns should be designed as non-dissipative in earthquakes, while the steel brace members should be designed as dissipative elements. These design intentions lead to thicker and larger gusset plates in design on one hand and a potentially under-rated contribution of gusset plates in design, on the other hand. In contrast, research has shown that compact and thinner gusset plates designed in accordance with the elliptical clearance method rather than the conventional standard linear clearance method can enhance system ductility and energy dissipation capacity in concentrically braced steel frames. In order to assess the two design methods, six cyclic push-over tests on full scale models of concentric braced steel frame structures were conducted. Furthermore, a 3D finite element (FE) shell model, incorporating state-of-the-art tools and techniques in numerical simulation, was developed that successfully replicates the response of gusset plate and bracing members under fully reversed cyclic axial loading. Direct measurements from strain gauges applied to the physical models were used primarily to validate FE models, while comparisons of hysteresis load-displacement loops from physical and numerical models were used to highlight the overall performance of the FE models. The study shows the two design methods attain structural response as per the design intentions; however, the elliptical clearance method has a superiority over the standard linear method as a fact of improving detailing of the gusset plates, enhancing resisting capacity and improving deformability of a CBF structure. Considerations were proposed for improvement of guidelines for detailing gusset plates and bracing members in CBF structures.
This study was designed to investigate the displacements and reaction forces of teeth caused by the application of the rectangular shape-memory arch wires with curve of Spee. Computer-aided three dimensional finite element method was adopted. This finite element model consists of brick element for teeth, beam element for the wire, and contact element for the periodontal ligament. And the application of the MEAW(Multiloop Edgewise Arch Wire) was also studied so that the results of the two methods can be compared each other. Total number of the nodes and elements were found to be 5925 and 4031, repectively. In addition, several types of elastics and corresponding displacements and reaction forces were examined. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. When the rectangular shape-memory arch wire with curve of Sun was used alone, the intrusion and labioversion was noticeable on the upper incisors, while the upper molars showed less intrusion. With MEAW, the intrusion and labioversion of the upper incisors were slightly larger than those when the shape-memory arch wire was used, but on the upper molars the opposite result was obtained with respect to the intrusion. 2. The shape-memory arch wire with the vertical elastics caused the larger downward displacement on the upper canine than that when the MEAW was used with the vertical elastics. However, the downward displacement of the upper incisors was larger in MEAW. The uprighting and buccoversion of the molars were observed in both cases. 3. The use of the Class II or III elastics showed the extrusion and changes in torque of the corresponding teeth. The downward displacement of the upper canine was increased when the Class II and vertical elastics were applied simultaneously, but it was decreased when both of the Class III and vertical elastics were used.

Recently, extensive research on crack analysis using extended finite element method(XFEM) which has main advantages in element re-meshing and visualization of cracks has been conducted. However, its application was restricted to the members of a single material. In this study, the applicability and feasibility of the XFEM to the multiple crack analysis of reinforced concrete beams were demonstrated. ABAQUS which has implemented XFEM was used for the crack analysis and its results were compared with test results. Enriched degree-of-freedom locking phenomenon was discovered and its causes and the ways to prevent it were suggested. The locking occurs when cracks in the adjacent elements simultaneously develop. A modelling technique for multiple cracking similar to test results was also proposed. The analysis with XFEM showed similar results to the tests in terms of crack patterns, spacing of cracks, and load-deflection relationship.

This study provides the elastic stress intensity factors, K, for circumferential and longitudinal surface cracked straight pipes under single or combined loads of internal pressure, bending, and torsion based on three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analyses. FE results are compared with two different types of defect assessment codes (API-579-1 and RCC-MR A16) to prove the accuracy of the FE results and the differences between the codes. Through the 3D FE analysis, it is found that the stress intensity factors are sensitive to the number of elements, which they were believed to not be sensitive to because of path independence. Differences were also found between the FE analysis results for crack defining methods and the results obtained by two different types of defect assessment codes.
Flutter is a dangerous phenomenon encountered in flexible structures subjected to aerodynamic forces. This includes aircraft, buildings and bridges. Flutter occurs as a result of interactions between aerodynamic, stiffness, and inertia forces on a structure. In an aircraft, as the speed of the flow increases, there may be a point at which the structural damping is insufficient to damp out the motion which is increasing due to aerodynamic energy being added to the structure. This vibration can cause structural failure, and therefore considering flutter characteristics is an essential part of designing an aircraft. Scientists and engineers studied flutter and developed theories and mathematical tools to analyze the phenomenon. Strip theory aerodynamics, beam structural models, unsteady lifting surface methods (e.g., Doublet-Lattice) and finite element models expanded analysis capabilities. Periodic Structures have been in the focus of research for their useful characteristics and ability to attenuate vibration in frequency bands called "stop-bands". A periodic structure consists of cells which differ in material or geometry. As vibration waves travel along the structure and face the cell boundaries, some waves pass and some are reflected back, which may cause destructive interference with the succeeding waves. This may reduce the vibration level of the structure, and hence improve its dynamic performance. In this paper, for the first time, we analyze the flutter characteristics of a wing with a periodic change in its sandwich construction. The new technique preserves the external geometry of the wing structure and depends on changing the material of the sandwich core. The periodic analysis and the vibration response characteristics of the model are investigated using a finite element model for the wing. Previous studies investigating the dynamic bending response of a periodic sandwich beam in the absence of flow have shown promising results.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between 3D bone architectural parameters and direction-related elastic moduli of cancellous bone of mandibular condyle. Materials and Methods: Two micro-pigs (Micro-$pig^R$, PWG Genetics Korea) were used. Each pig was about 12 months old and weighing around 44 kg. 31 cylindrical bone specimen were obtained from cancellous bone of condyles for 3D analysis and measured by micro-computed tomography. Six parameters were trabecular thickness (Tb. Th), bone specific surface (BS/BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), structure model index (SMI), degree of anisotropy (DA) and 3-dimensional fractal dimension (3DFD). Elastic moduli of three orthogonal directions (superior-inferior (SI), medial-lateral (ML), andterior-posterior (AP) direction) were calculated through finite element analysis. Results: Elastic modulus of superior-inferior direction was higher than those of other directions. Elastic moduli of 3 orthogonal directions showed different correlation with 3D architectural parameters. Elastic moduli of SI and ML directions showed significant strong to moderate correlation with BV/TV, SMI and 3DFD. Conclusion: Elastic modulus of cancellous bone of pig mandibular condyle was highest in the SI direction and it was supposed that the change into plate-like structure of trabeculae was mainly affected by increase of trabeculae of SI and ML directions.
Substructuring methods are often used in finite element structural analyses. In this study a multi-level substructuring(MLSS) algorithm is developed and proposed as a possible candidate for finite element fluid solvers. The present algorithm consists of four stages such as a gathering, a condensing, a solving and a scattering stage. At each level, a predetermined number of elements are gathered and condensed to form an element of higher level. At the highest level, each sub-domain consists of only one super-element. Thus, the inversion process of a stiffness matrix associated with internal degrees of freedom of each sub-domain has been replaced by a sequential static condensation of gathered element matrices. The global algebraic system arising from the assembly of each sub-domain matrices is solved using a well-known iterative solver such as the conjugare gradient(CG) or the conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method. A time comparison with CG has been performed on a 2-D Poisson problem. With one domain the computing time by MLSS is comparable with that by CG up to about 260,000 d.o.f. For 263,169 d.o.f using 8 x 8 sub-domains, the time by MLSS is reduced to a value less than $30\%$ of that by CG. The lid-driven cavity problem has been solved for Re = 3200 using the element interpolation degree(Deg.) up to cubic. in this case, preconditioning techniques usually accompanied by iterative solvers are not needed. Finite element formulation for the incompressible flow has been stabilized by a modified residual procedure proposed by Ilinca et al.[9].
An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In conventional approaches to predicting rail noise, the rail is regarded as placed in a free space so that the reflection from the ground is not included. However, in order to predict rail noise close to the rail, the effect of the ground should be contained in the analysis. In this study the rail noise reflected from the ground is investigated using the wavenumber domain finite element and boundary element methods. First, two rail models, one using rail attached to the rigid ground and one using rail located above rigid ground, are considered and examined to determine the rigid ground effect in terms of the radiation efficiency. From this analysis, it was found that the two models give considerably different results, so that the distance between the rail and the ground is an important factor. Second, an impedance condition was set for the ground and the effect of the ground impedance on the rail noise was evaluated for the two rail models.
