Shell finite elements are widely used for the analysis of thin section objects such as sheet metal parts, automobile bodies and et al. due to their computational efficiency. Since many of input data for finite element analysis are given as solid models or triangulated surface models, one should extract midsurface information from these input data initially and then construct shell meshes on the extracted midsurfaces. In this paper, a method of generating shell elements on midsurfaces directly from input models has been proposed, in which midsurface generating process can be omitted. In order to construct shell meshes, the input models should be triangulated on surfaces first, and then tetrahedral elements are generated by using an advancing front method, and finally mid shell surfaces are obtained from tetrahedral meshes. Some examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
In the present paper, development of the three-dimensional (3D) computational code based on Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) for solving the multigroup forward/adjoint diffusion equation in both rectangular and hexagonal geometries is reported. Linear approximation of shape functions in the GFEM with unstructured tetrahedron elements is used in the calculation. Both criticality and fixed source calculations may be performed using the developed GFEM-3D computational code. An acceptable level of accuracy at a low computational cost is the main advantage of applying the unstructured tetrahedron elements. The unstructured tetrahedron elements generated with Gambit software are used in the GFEM-3D computational code through a developed interface. The forward/adjoint multiplication factor, forward/adjoint flux distribution, and power distribution in the reactor core are calculated using the power iteration method. Criticality calculations are benchmarked against the valid solution of the neutron diffusion equation for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-3D and Water-Water Energetic Reactor (VVER)-1000 reactor cores. In addition, validation of the calculations against the $P_1$ approximation of the transport theory is investigated in relation to the liquid metal fast breeder reactor benchmark problem. The neutron fixed source calculations are benchmarked through a comparison with the results obtained from similar computational codes. Finally, an analysis of the sensitivity of calculations to the number of elements is performed.

The paper deals with the problem related to the modelling of riveted assemblies for crashworthiness analysis of full-scale complete aircraft structures. Comparisons between experiments and standard FE computations on high-energy accidental situations onto aluminium riveted panels show that macroscopic plastic strains are not sufficiently localised in the FE shells connected to rivet elements. The main reason is related to the structural embrittlement caused by holes, which are currently not modelled. Consequently, standard displacement FE models do not succeed in initialising and propagating the rupture in sheet metal plates and along rivet rows as observed in the experiments. However, the literature survey show that it is possible to formulate super-elements featuring defects that both give accurate singular strain fields and are compatible with standard displacement finite elements. These super-elements can be related to the displacement model of the hybrid-Trefftz principle of the finite element method, which is a kind of domain decomposition method. A feature of hybrid-Trefftz finite elements is that they are mainly used for elastic computations. It is thus proposed to investigate the possibility of formulating a hybrid displacement finite element, including the effects of a hole, dedicated to crashworthiness analysis of full-scale aeronautic structures.
When we use a Finite Elements Method (FEM) to solve a linear static analysis problem, number of elements need to be sufficiently small for convergence of the solution. If we analysis a part, whose curvature is varying heavily, we face to determine how small the elements size is, because the calculated stress is increased as the elements are smaller. In this case, we need to analysis with mesh insensitive method, stress linearization. We can get a solution that is not varying with the elements size if the size is smaller than a certain level. In this paper, we evaluate a pressure vessel having geometrical discontinuities using stress linearization. First, we analysis the vessel with global model, including all part of the vessel, using large shell elements. Second, we analysis the local part of the vessel, which is the small part occurring maximum stress, using small continuum elements. Last, we evaluate the safety of the pressure vessel according to the ASME Sec. VIII Div 2.
For the wave propagation problems, the influence of time-dependent dynamic behavior must be accounted in the analysis. In this study, the dynamic analysis method which combines finite elements and boundary elements is developed for the wave propagation problem modelling the infinity of medium through 3-D boundary elements and underground structure through degenerated finite shell elements. Performing dynamic analysis of underground tunnels by the proposed coupling method of boundary and finite elements, it is found that the change of the stiffness of structures has a good effect on the response. It is also found that the consideration of the repeating effect due to moving traffic loads which is difficult with existing 2-D dynamic analysis can be possible with the 3-D analysis in time domain.

In this paper, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element solutions obtained by MINI-elements based triangular elements and tetrahedral elements are compared with those obtained from numerically well-behaved rectangular and hexahedral elements. The theoretical background of the MINI-elements is introduced in detail and the rigid-viscoplastic finite element formulation is also given. Discussion on the results of the MINI-elements is made with emphasis on the effect of a stabilizer simplifying velocity-bubble coupled terms.
In this paper, the approximately coupled method of finite element method and boundary element method to obtain efficient and accurate analysis results is proposed for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem with a geometrically abruptly changing part. As the finite element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node and four-node plane stress element is applied, and as the boundary element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node boundary element is applied. In the modeling stage, firstly, an entire analysis target object is modeled as finite elements, and then a geometrically abruptly changing part is modeled as boundary elements. The boundary element is defined using the nodes defined for modeling finite elements. In the analysis stage, finite element analysis is firstly performed on a entire analysis target object, and boundary element analysis is automatically performed afterwards. As for the boundary conditions at boundary element analysis, displacement conditions and stress conditions, which are the results of finite element analysis, are applied. As a numerical example, the analysis results for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem, a plate with a crack, are presented and investigated.
This analytical study was carried out to make quality and productivity up in designing the frame-type furniture with semi-rigid joint by understanding the mechanical and structural behavior of the joint and by evaluating the validity of application of the time-saving Finite Element Method to its structural analysis. Slope deflection equation for rigid joint was modified to describe the moment-rotation behavior of semi-rigid joint and the joint stiffness factor(Z) could be calculated to lessen the experimental expense. It was proved that Finite Element Analysis with imaginary elements having equivalent MOE to the semi-rigid joint could be the alternative method for the structural analysis of the frame-type furniture, comparing the internal rotation of the 2-dimensional beam-to-column model with two-pin(wooden dowel) from the finite element method with other available theoretical and experimental rotation value.
When a large ship is advancing in waves, ship undergoes the hydroelastic response, which has influences on structural stability and the fatigue destruction etc. of the ship. Therefore, to predict accurate hydroelastic response, it is necessary to analyze hydroelastic response including fluid-structure interaction. In this research, a ship is divided into many hull elements to calculate the fluid forces and wave exciting forces on each elements using three-dimensional source distribution method. The calculated fluid forces and wave exciting forces are assigned to nodes of hull elements. The neighbor nodes are connected with elastic beam elements. We analyzed hydroelastic responses, and those are formulated by using finite element method. Particularly, to estimate the influence of forward speed on the hydroelastic responses, we use two different methods : Full Hull Rotation Method(FHRM) and Sectional Hull Rotation Method(SHRM).
Three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite element is applied to seismic response analysis of an oil storage tank with a floating roof. The fluid element utilized in the present analysis is formulated based on the displacement finite element method considering only volumetric elasticity and its element stiffness matrix is derived by using one-point integration method in order to avoid volumetric locking. The method usually adds a rotational penalty stiffness to satisfy the irrotational condition for fluid motion and modifies element mass matrices through the projected mass method to suppress spurious hourglass-mode appeared in compensation for one-point integration. In the fluid element utilized in the present paper, a small hourglass stiffness is employed. The fluid and structure domains for the objective oil storage tank are modeled by eight-node solid elements and four-node shell elements, respectively, and the transient response of the floating roof structure or the free surface are evaluated by implicit direct time integration method. The results of seismic response analyses are compared with those by other method and the validation of the present analysis using three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite elements is shown.
