  • Plastically deformed layer influences the mechanical property of the mechanical element such as creep hardening, microscopical crack and stress corrosion destruction. Therefore, the property so called the surface integrity has to be considered, and the machined surface including plastic deformation, distribution of stress has to be conducted quantitatively. This paper explains the orthogonal cutting, and made an orthogonal cutting model using the finite element method, then analyzed cutting power, plastic deformation of workpiece. It introduces the developed subsequent recrystallizations technique for measurement of the plastic strain of machined surface, and verified the technique.

  • To predict the radiating noise from the vibrating surface, it is required to know the velocity distribution of vibrating surface exactly as possible as it can. Although it can be obtained by finite element method, their accuracy is limited by theuncertainty of preparing input data such as material propoerties, damping, excitation, and the actual boundary conditions. Experimental values are accurate but are seldom available as many asthe data points compared to FEM mesh. Therefore, hybrid method of experiment and finite element method, called modal expansion technique, is investigated for the preparatin of accurate element method at specified frequencies and for the verification of this scheme, related experiment is performed. In high frequency range above 2000 Hz, piezo-electric material is used as an actuator.

  • The scaled-boundary finite element method is a novel semi-analytical technique, combining the advantages of the finite element and the boundary element methods with unique properties of its own. The method works by weakening the governing differential equations in one coordinate direction through the introduction of shape functions, then solving the weakened equations analytically in the other (radial) coordinate direction. These coordinate directions are defined by the geometry of the domain and a scaling centre. This paper presents a general development of the scaled boundary finite-element method for two-dimensional problems where two boundaries of the solution domain are similar. Unlike three-dimensional and axisymmetric problems of the same type, the use of logarithmic solutions of the weakened differential equations is found to be necessary. The accuracy and efficiency of the procedure is demonstrated through two examples. The first of these examples uses the standard finite element method to provide a comparable solution, while the second combines both solution techniques in a single analysis. One significant application of the new technique is the generation of transition super-elements requiring few degrees of freedom that can connect two regions of vastly different levels of discretisation.

  • In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to arbitrarily activate the nodal points in finite element model through the meshless approximation methods such as MLS(moving least squares method), and theoretical investigations are carried out including the consistency and boundeness of numerical solution to prove the validity of the proposed method. By using the proposed node activation technique, one can activate and handle only the concerned nodes as unknown variables among the large number of nodal points in the finite element model. Therefore, the proposed technique has a great potential in design and reanalysis procedure.

  • This paper presents the details of finite element (FE) modeling and analysis of an external prestressing technique to strengthen a prestressed concrete (PSC) end block. Various methods of external prestressing techniques have been discussed. In the proposed technique, transfer of external force is in shear mode on the end block creating a complex stress distribution. The proposed technique is useful when the ends of the PSC girders are not accessible. Finite element modeling issues have been outlined. Brief description about material nonlinearity including key aspects in modeling inelastic behaviour has been provided. Finite element (FE) modeling including material, loading has been explained in depth. FE analysis for linear and nonlinear static analysis has been conducted for varying external loadings. Various responses such as out-of-plane deformation and slip have been computed and compared with the corresponding experimental observations. From the study, it has been observed that the computed slope and slip of the steel bracket under external loading is in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations.

  • In this paper, finite element with embedded discontinuous line is introduced in order to avoid the difficulties of adding new nodal points along with crack growth in discrete crack model. With the discontinuous element using discontinuous shape function, stiffness matrix of finite element is derived and dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Using the finite element program made with employed algorithms, algorithm is verified and fracture analysis of simple concrete beam is performed.

  • Metal bonded rubber spring is used in primary suspension component of the high speed train. The aim of this study is to establish a finite element analysis technique for the metal bonded rubber spring. Some theoretical analyses were performed on the hyperelastic behavior in rubber material and test are carried out to acquire the constants in strain energy function for it. Also, finite element analysis were executed to evaluate the design parameter and behavior of deformation and stress distribution using by the commercial finite element code.

  • The reliable stress intensity factor analysis is required for fracture mechanics design or safety evaluation of mechanical joints at which cracks often initiate and grow. It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints usually nucleate as corner cracks at the faying surface of joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. In this paper, three dimensional finite element analyses are performed for elliptical arc through cracks in mechanical joints. Thereafter stress intensity factors along elliptical crack front including two surface points are determined by the virtual crack closure technique. Virtual crack closure technique is a method to calculate stress intensity factor using the finite element analysis and can be applied to non-orthogonal mesh. As a result, the effects of clearance on the stress intensity factor are investigated and crack shape are then predicted.

  • In the finite element simulation of hot forging processes using hexahedron, remeshing of a flash is very difficult. The mesh compression method is a remeshing technique to construct an effective hexahedral mesh. However, because mesh is distorted during the compression procedure or the mesh compression method, mesh smoothing is necessary to improve the mesh Qualify. in this study, several geometric mesh smoothing techniques and a matrix norm optimization technique are applied and compared which is more adaptive to the mesh compression method.
