This paper concerns the finite element (FE) modeling approach for NATM tunneling in water bearing ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as soil-water characteristics, location of hydraulic boundary conditions, the way of modeling drainage flow, among others. The results indicate that the soil-water characteristics play the most important role in the tunneling-induced settlement characteristics. Based on the results, modeling guidelines were suggested for stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling of NATM tunneling.

The analysis of thermoplastic automotive bumpers needs not only characterizations of the thermomechanical properties of thermoplastic materials but also the finite element method which can solve the problems with a large deflection, an elastic-inelastic deformation, and a change of a contact state. This paper describes the modeling techniques in the finite element analysis in order to get a good prediction of thermoplastic bumper behaviors. Simplification effects of a complex geometry of thermoplastic bumpers are studied by comparing the results from static loading tests and the finite element analysis.

This paper introduces a geometric modelling system adopted in a newly developed preprocessor for finite element analysis of three dimensional structures. The formulation is characterized by hierarchical construction of structural model which consists of control points, curves, surfaces and solids. Various surface and solid modeling schemes based on blending functions and boundary representation are systematized for finite element mesh generation. The modeling system is integrated with model synthesis and operations which facilitate modelling of complex structures.
The information on local stress acting in a bridge is required in many occasions such as fatigue assessment. The analysis by beam elements cannot yield this class of information adequately, while the finite element modeling of an entire long-span bridge by shell elements is impractical. In the present study, the hybrid modeling is tried out: only part of a bridge in which the point of interest is located is discretized by shell elements and the remaining part is modeled by beam elements. By solving a simple box girder problem, the effectiveness of this approach is discussed. This technique is then applied to the Rama IX Bridge for local stress evaluation. The numerical results compare very well with the results of a full-scale static loading test. The present research thus offers a practical yet accurate technique for the stress analysis of a long-span cable-stayed bridge.
Advanced material models for concrete are not widely available in general purpose finite element codes. Parameters to define them complicate the implementation because they are case sensitive. In addition to this, their validity under severe shear condition has not been verified. In this article, simple engineering plasticity material models available in a commercial finite element code are used to demonstrate that complicated shear behavior can be calculated with reasonable accuracy. For this purpose dynamic response of a squat shear wall that had been tested on a shaking table as part of an experimental program conducted in Japan is analyzed. Both the finite element and material aspects of the modeling are examined. A corrective artifice for general engineering plasticity models to account for shear effects in concrete is developed. The results of modifications in modeling the concrete in compression are evaluated and compared with experimental response quantities.

An electromagnetic linear actuator is controlled precisely and securely and is useful in devices that require linear motion. The most commonly used method in the performance verification process for an electromagnetic actuator is finite element analysis that utilizes CAE. However, finite element analysis has the disadvantage that modeling and analysis consume a lot of time. Accordingly, lumped parameter analysis can be an alternative approach to the finite element method because of its computation iteration capability with fair accuracy. In this paper, the lumped parameter model and simulation results are presented. In addition, the results of the lumped parameter analysis are compared with those obtained from finite element analysis for verification.
When the temperature of a structure varies, there is a tendency to produce changes in the shape of the structure. The resulting actions may be of considerable importance in the analysis of the structures having non-prismatic members. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the modeling, analysis and behavior of the non-prismatic members subjected to temperature changes with the aid of finite element modeling. The fixed-end moments and fixed-end forces of such members due to temperature changes were computed through a comprehensive parametric study. It was demonstrated that the conventional methods using frame elements can lead to significant errors, and the deviations can reach to unacceptable levels for these types of structures. The design formulas and the dimensionless design coefficients were proposed based on a comprehensive parametric study using two-dimensional plane-stress finite element models. The fixed-end actions of the non-prismatic members having parabolic and straight haunches due to temperature changes can be determined using the proposed approach without necessitating a detailed finite element model solution. Additionally, the robust results of the finite element analyses allowed examining the sources and magnitudes of the errors in the conventional analysis.
This paper deals with the application of joint element in the finite element modeling of discontinuities encountered during rock tunneling. A nodal displacement joint element was implemented in a two dimensional finite element program GEOFE2D. The applicability of the joint element for modeling of discontinuities and the numerical stability of the implemented algorithm were examined by comparing the results of reduced small scale model tests as well as commercially available FEM program. The GEOFE2D was then used to analyze a tunnel crossed by a major discontinuity for the purpose of understanding the effect of discontinuity on the tunnel behavior. In addition, a modeling technique for the junction of discontinuity and shotcrete lining was presented. The results of analysis indicated that the stress-strain field around the tunnel is significantly altered by the presence of discontinuity, and that the stresses in the shotcrete lining considerably increase at the junction of the shotcrete lining and the discontinuity. It is therefore concluded that the major discontinuities must be carefully modeled in the finite element analysis of a tunneling problem in order to obtain more reliable results close to actual tunnel behavior.
This paper describes effects of infill walls on behavior of RC frame with low strength, including numerical modeling, modal testing and finite-element model updating. For this purpose full scaled, one bay and one story RC frame is produced and tested for plane and brick in-filled conditions. Ambient-vibration testis applied to identify dynamic characteristics under natural excitations. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are used to obtain experimental dynamic characteristics. A numerical modal analysis is performed on the developed two-dimensional finite element model of the frames using SAP2000 software to provide numerical frequencies and mode shapes. Dynamic characteristics obtained by numerical and experimental are compared with each other and finite element model of the frames are updated by changing some uncertain modeling parameters such as material properties and boundary conditions to reduce the differences between the results. At the end of the study, maximum differences in the natural frequencies are reduced on average from 34% to 9% and a good agreement is found between numerical and experimental dynamic characteristics after finite-element model updating. In addition, it is seen material properties are more effective parameters in the finite element model updating of plane frame. However, for brick in-filled frame changes in boundary conditions determine the model updating process.

Due to the great complexity of the physical phenomena involved in most ultrasonic nondestructive testing, the numerical method is effective in many cases of their theoretical modeling. A brief overview is provided in this paper of the numerical methods used in modeling ultrasonic nondestructive testing, with an emphasis on the finite difference and the finite element methods. The procedures of execution, special considerations required, and some previous research results of the finite difference and the finite element methods are presented, with a rather extensive list of work reported in the literature. These numerical modeling techniques for ultrasonic nondestructive testing are expected to be more reliable and more convenient, as a result of the continuing technological development of computers.
