The approximation properties for $L^2$-projection, Raviart-Thomas projection, and inverse inequality have been derived in 3 dimensional space. h-p-mixed finite element methods for strongly nonlinear second order elliptic problems are proposed and analyzed in 3D. Solvability and convergence of the linearized problem have been shown through duality argument and fixed point argument. The analysis is carried out in detail using Raviart-Thomas-Nedelec spaces as an example.
In the current study, automatic tool compensation is accomplished by using a finite element stamping analysis for a center roof rail made of UHSS in order to satisfy the specifications for shape accuracy. The initial blank shape is calculated from a finite element inverse analysis and potential forming defects such as tearing and wrinkling are determined by the finite element stamping analysis based on the initial tool shape. The blank shape is optimized to meet the shape requirements of the final product with the stamping analysis, and die compensation is determined with the information about springback. The specifications for shape accuracy were successfully achieved by the proposed die compensation scheme using the finite element stamping analysis. The current study demonstrates that the compensation tendency is similar when the proposed scheme is used or when the compensation is performed by trial and error in the press-shop. This similarity verifies that the automatic compensation scheme can be used effectively in the first stage of tool design especially for components made from UHSS.

In this paper, identification of isotropic and orthotropic linear elastic material constitutive parameters has been demonstrated by a FEA-free energy-based inverse analysis method. An important feature of the proposed method is that it requires no finite element (FE) simulation of the tested material. Full-field displacements calculated using digital image correlation (DIC) are used to compute DIC stress fields enforcing the equilibrium condition and DIC strain fields using interpolation functions. Boundary tractions and displacements are implicitly recast into an objective function that measures the energy residual of external work and internal elastic strain energy. The energy conservation principle states that the residual should be zero, and so minimizing this objective function inversely identifies the constitutive parameters. Synthetic data from simulated testing of isotropic materials and orthotropic composite materials under 2D plane stress conditions are used for verification of the proposed method. When identifying the constitutive parameters, it is beneficial to apply loadings in multiple directions, and in ways that create non-uniform stress distributions. The sensitivity of the parameter identification method to noise in both the measured full-field DIC displacements and loadings has been investigated.
Finite Element analysis is widely applied to elevated temperature forging processes and shows a lot of information of plastic deformation such as strain, stress, defects, damages and temperature distributions. In highly elevated temperature deformation processes, temperature of material and tool have significant influence on tool life, deformation conditions and productivities. To predict temperature related properties accurately, adequate coefficients of not only contact heat transfer between material and dies but also convection heat transfer due to coolants are required. In most F.E analysis, too higher value of contact heat transfer coefficient is usually applied to get acceptable temperature distribution of tool. For contact heat transfer coefficients between die and workpiece, accurate values were evaluated with different pressure and lubricants conditions. But convection heat transfer coefficients have not been investigated for forging lubricants. In this research, convection heat transfer coefficients for cooling by emulsion lubricants are suggested by experiment and Inverse method. To verify acquired convection and contact heat transfer coefficients, tool temperature was measured for the comparison between measured tool temperature and analysis results. To increase analysis accuracy, repeated analysis scheme was applied till temperature of the tool got to be in the steady-state conditions. Verification of heat transfer coefficients both contact and convection heat transfer coefficients was proven with good accordance between measurement and analysis.
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline thin-films, critical for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) components, are known to have the size effect and the scatter in the length scale of microns by the numbers of intensive investigation by experiments and simulations. So, the consideration of the microstructure is essential to cover these length scale effects. The lattice based stochastic model for the microstructure evolution is used to simulate the actual microstructure, and the fast and reliable algorithm is described in this paper. The kinetics parameters, which are the key parameters for the microstructure evolution based on the nucleation and growth mechanism, are extracted from the given micrograph of a polycrystalline material by an inverse method. And the method is verified by the comparison of the quantitative measures, the number of grains and the grain size distribution, for the actual and simulated microstructures. Finite element mesh is then generated on this lattice based microstructure by the developed code. And the statistical finite element analysis is accomplished for selected microstructure.
The static behavior of continuous system is described by the elastic curve method or is approximately analyzed by a finite element method to be modeled as a discrete system. If a continuous system is constrained by linear constraints which restrict its static behavior, its behavior can be approximately described by the finite element method. It is not easy to describe the constrained behavior by continuous coordinate system. Starting from the generalized inverse method provided by Eun, Lee and Chung, this study is to expand the equation to the continuous systems, to perform the structural analysis of the beam under a uniform loading with interior spring supports, and to investigate the validity of the proposed method through applications.
Many process parameters have an effect on the auto-body panel forming process. A well-designed blank shape causes the material to flow smoothly, reduces the punch and yields a product with uniform thickness distribution. Therefore, the determination of an initial blank shape plays the important role of saving time and cost in the auto-body panel forming process. For these reasons, some approaches to estimate the initial blank shape have been implemented in this paper, the one-step approach by using a finite element inverse method will be introduced to predict the initial blank shape the developed program is applied to auto-body panel forming.
This paper presents the results of finite element simulations of elastic wave propagation in an underwater steel plate and the verification of a proposed method utilizing elastic wave-based damage detection. For the simulation and verification, we carried out the following procedures. First, three-dimensional finite element models were constructed using a general purpose finite element program. Second, two types of damages (mechanical defects and deteriorations) were applied to the underwater steel plate and three parameters (defect location, defect width, and depth) were considered to adjust the severity of the applied damages. Third, elastic waves were generated using the oblique incident method with a Gaussian tone burst, and the response signals were obtained at the receiving point for each defect or deterioration case. In addition, the received time domain signals were analyzed, particularly by measuring the magnitudes of the maximum amplitudes. Finally, the presence and severity of each type of damage were identified by the decreasing ratios of the maximum amplitudes. The results showed that the received signals for the models had the same global pattern with minor changes in the amplitudes and phases, and the decreasing ratio generally increased as the damage area increased. In addition, we found that the defect depth was more critical than the width in the decrease of the amplitude. This mainly occurred because the layout of the depth interfered with the elastic wave propagation in a more severe manner than the layout of the width. An inverse analysis showed that the proposed method is applicable for detecting mechanical defects and quantifying their severity.
In this paper, we prpose a method for tracking optimally a spatial trajectory of the end-effector of flexible robot arms with multiple joints. The proposed method finds joint trajectories and joint torques necessary to produce the desired end-effector motion of flexible manipulator. In inverse kinematics, optimized joint trajectories are computed from elastic equations. In inverse dynamics, joint torques are obtained from the joint euqations by using the optimized joint trajectories. The equations of motion using finite element method and virtual work principle are employed. Optimal control is applied to optimize joint trajectories which are computed in inverse kinematics. The simulation result of a flexible planar manipulator is presented.
Physical importance of cutting temperatures has long been recognized. Cutting temperatures have strongly influenced both the tool life and the metallurgical state of machined surfaces. Temperatures in drilling processes are particularly important, because chips remain in contact with the tool for a relatively long time in a hole. Tool temperatures tend to be higher in drilling processes than in other in machining processes. This paper concerns with modeling of thermal behaviors in drilling processes as well as estimation of the cutting temperature distribution based on remote temperature measurements. One- and two-dimensional estimation problems are proposed to analyze drilling temperatures. The proposed thermal models are compared with solutions of finite element methods. Observer algorithms are developed to solve inverse heat conduction problems. In order to apply the estimation of cutting temperatures, approximation methods are proposed by using the solution of the finite element method. In two-dimensional analysis, a moving heat source according to feedrate of the drilling process is regarded as a fixed heat source with respect to the drilling location. Simulation results confirm the application of the proposed methods.
