Incorporating concepts of biodiversity into modern aquaculture: macroalgal species richness enhances bioremediation efficiency in a lumpfish hatchery

  • Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food producing sectors; however, intensive farming techniques of finfish have raised environmental concerns, especially through the release of excessive nutrients into surrounding waters. Biodiversity has been widely shown to enhance ecosystem functions and services, but there has been limited testing or application of this key ecological relationship in aquaculture. This study tested the applicability of the biodiversity-function relationship to integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), asking whether species richness can enhance the efficiency of macroalgal bioremediation of wastewater from finfish aquaculture. Five macroalgal species (Chondrus crispus, Fucus serratus, Palmaria palmata, Porphyra dioica, and Ulva sp.) were cultivated in mono- and polyculture in water originating from a lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) hatchery. Total seaweed biomass production, specific growth rates (SGR), and the removal of ammonium (NH4+), total oxidised nitrogen (TON), and phosphate (PO43-) from the wastewater were measured. Species richness increased total seaweed biomass production by 11% above the average component monoculture, driven by an increase in up to 5% in SGR of fast-growing macroalgal species in polycultures. Macroalgal species richness further enhanced ammonium uptake by 25%, and TON uptake by nearly 10%. Phosphate uptake was not improved by increased species richness. The increased uptake of NH4+ and TON with increased macroalgal species richness suggests the complementary use of different nitrogen forms (NH4+ vs. TON) in macroalgal polycultures. The results demonstrate enhanced bioremediation efficiency by increased macroalgal species richness and show the potential of integrating biodiversity-function research to improve aquaculture sustainability.

  • 적조란 유해조류의 대 번식으로 바다물의 색깔이 변하는 일시적인 자연현상으로 어패류를 집단 폐사 시킨다. 유해 적조류에 의한 국내 수산업 피해가 증가함에 따라서 적조에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 특히 적조 발생 예측은 적조에 대한 피해를 최소화 시킬 수 있다. 그러나 국내의 적조 현상 예측에 대한 대부분의 연구는 단순히 적조 분류에 집중되어 있어서 적조발생 예측에는 미흡하다. 본 논문은 퍼지 추론을 이용한 새로운 적조발생 예측 방법을 제안한다.

한국에서 발생한 시구아테라: 증례보고 (Ciguatera fish poisoning in Korea: a case report)

  • Ciguatera is the commonest syndrome of marine poisoning that is caused by the ingestion of ciguatoxins that accumulate in certain tropical and subtropical finfish. It is endemic throughout the subtropical and tropical regions of the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean and has been rarely reported in Korea. With the expansion of travel, tourism, and the import of fish from the tropics, ciguatera poisoning now affects a diverse population. We report a case of ciguatera in a 70-year-old woman, presenting with general paralysis and coma, which developed after consuming codfish and mackerel in Korea.

Effects of land-based fish farm effluent on the morphology and growth of Ascophyllum nodosum (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) in southwestern Nova Scotia

  • Phenotypic plasticity was examined in the economically and ecologically important brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum in southwestern Nova Scotia, considering specifically how nutrient loading affected its vegetative and reproductive features. To determine this, we examined morphometric changes in A. nodosum from two sites receiving direct effluent impacts from a land-based finfish aquaculture facility and from two control sites, approximately 2 km away from the aquaculture facility in opposite directions. Fronds from test sites were significantly younger than from control sites (5 y vs. 8 y); however, fronds from farm sites were significantly larger (219 g vs. 90 g) because of their higher growth rates. Thalli from farm sites had greater reproductive potential, as shown by numbers of receptacle initials (797 initials vs. 281 initials). These results suggest limited nutrient inflows from land-based aquaculture may positively affect adjacent Ascophyllum populations by inducing higher growth rates. We conclude that the coordination of effluent management from land-based aquaculture with natural resource harvesting of A. nodosum may be beneficial. Further study is necessary to determine the limits of nutrient loading for this potentially beneficial outcome.

  • The northeastern Pacific and eastern Bering Sea supports large and divers finfish and shellfish compelxes. The North Pacific fishing grounds are largest fish production total 30.89 percent of the world in 1983. Recent action by the around countries extending their fisheies jurisdiction to 200 mile has provided a new environment. The new approch to fisheries management has resulted in an arormous expansion in tile demand for scientific information. These are no longer limited to biological concerns. Emphasis has been focused recently on the need to understand the economic, social, politics and philosophy characteristics of a fishing and how they will be affected by management decisions. The horizontal management and portfolio management for fisheries has increased interest in complex biological models and the coupling of these models with economic, politics and phyisophy components. Successful completion of this task will require and expanded understanding of oceanographic, biological, economic, social, politics and philosophic process associated with fisheries. Particular attention should be devoted to acquiring information an data processing for Korean trawl fishery, stock assessment in the areas. The need for international collaboration in management must be stressed. Some northeast Pacific and eastern Bering Sea fish stock migrate over long distances and political boundaries. Further, nearly all the fish stocks are harvested by several nations. The features require cooperation and coordination of research activities. The horizontal management will be made a way these activities for the around countries in the sea. Strongly, tile proposed again, Pacific International Council for Exploration of the Seas, PICES will interest between all users of the area's fisheries.

  • Formalin, 37% formaldehyde, has been employed as a chemical for controlling ectoparasites and aquatic fungi responsible for infectious fish of diseases in hatcheries and culture facilities (Roberts, 1978; Schnick, 1991; Rach et al., 1997). Regarding the commercial usage of formaldehyde in the aquaculture industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three commercial products as parasiticides in a species-specific manner: Paracide-F and Formalin-F for bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, salmon, and trout and Parasite-S for all finfish (FDA, 1998). Withdrawal time for these products was legally zero when used as permitted under the regulations. With the increased production of cultured fish in Korea, such as olive Hounder Paralichthys olivaceus and black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, application of formalin to diseased fish has become more frequent. Moreover, there is still some concern about environmental exposures caused by effluents from fish culture facilities. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate residues in fish resulting from therapeutic usage of formalin in the aquaculture industry and to document the rate of disappearance of formaldehyde in seawater treated with formalin. In situ Hybridization of a Megalocytivirus Using Nucleic Acid Probes against ATPase and the Major Capsid Protein of Rock Bream Iridovirus

  • Systemic infections of maricultured fishes by Megalocytivirus species have occurred over a broad area in South Korea, causing extensive economic loss. We developed digoxigenin-labeled nucleic acid probes against the 230-bp ATPase and 311-bp major capsid protein (MCP) of rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus iridovirus (RBIV) using polymerase chain reaction, and an in situ hybridization (ISH) method to detect Megalocytivirus in formalin-fixed tissues of mariculture species (rock bream, sea bass, and olive flounder). ISH-positive cells were abundant in the hematopoietic and connective tissues of various organs, while brain tissue showed little or no signal. The ISH procedure can become an important diagnostic tool in complement with histopathological methods, and advances epidemiological studies on the origin and distribution of Megalocytivirus in mariculture.

북신만의 적조에 관하여 (Red Tides in Mariculture Farms in Puksin Bay, Korea)

  • 여러 규모의 적조 현상이 1970년대 말부터 우리나라 대부분의 패류 및 어류 양식장이 있는 남해안에서 일어나고 있다. 경남 충무의 북신만도 이곳 중의 하나로 1980년대 초부터 매년 적조가 나타나고 있다. $1990\~1991$년 사이에 양식 생물의 대량 폐사가 이곳에 나타났고 이때의 우점 적조 생물 종은 90년 11월과 91년 6월에 Leplocylindrus danicus, 90년 12월과 91년 8월에는 Skeletonema costatum, 그리고 91년 8월에는 Nitzschia seriata, 91년 7월에는 Gymnodinium splendens로 기록되었으며 적조 시기의 최대 클로로필-a 량은 $265.7{\mu}/l$였다. 이렇게 빈번하게 발생하는 적조 현상은 부근 해역의 부영양화와 관계 있으며 적조와 부영양화의 상관 관계에 대하여 본 논문에서 논의하였다.

수산생물질병에 대한 국가관리체제의 문제점과 개선방안에 관한 연구 (A study on the Problematic and Effective Framework of the National Aquatic Animal Health Management and Legislation in Korea)

  • During the last two decades, the rapid increase in aquaculture world wide, particularly in finfish and shellfish culture, is the result of both area expansion and production intensification. Under these conditions, the prevalence and spread of infectious diseases have increased as a result of higher infection pressure and decreased resistance of the aquatic animals. Accordingly, the effective control of infectious diseases has become more and more important to development of aquaculture. Recently the Pathology Team of National Fisheries Research and Development(NFRDI), has played pivotal roles in establishing the national management and control system of aquatic animal health and disease by new legislative works and technical guidelines. Under the national aquatic animal disease control framework, the Pathology Team of NFRDI and MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) should also establish effective management and regulations, with the support of enforcement and monitoring policies. In conjunction with effective aquatic disease national management, financial assistance or alternative compensation options for aquaculture should also be available in the event of production losses or eradication system.

양식어류의 자동먹이공급장치 개발 연구-I (A study on the development of auto-feeding system for the cultured fish-I)

  • This paper introduces an auto-feeding system to exactly control the feeding time and the amount to cultured fishes in aquaculture industrial field. To reduce expensive costs or labors in this field, it was designed by the concept of controlling feed quantity exactly on the basis of fish's feeding behavior pattern in water tank. A feed control method of this system was developed for controlling feed amount by rotor capacity and motor rotated number. Moreover, a scattering section was selected by rotate way of propeller wing to scatter dried feed to designated site, and then, the diameter of its wing was 250mm and maximum scattering distance was 7.6m for 600rpm. Furthermore, the scattering ways were embodied 2 types such as a simplified way and a multistage shift way looks like a manual scattering. As a results, the multistage shift way is more effective to discharge the dried feed widely than the simple way in the water tank.
