Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is being considered as a technology to replace the conventional manufacturing process of titanium alloys. However, coarse β grains, which can extend through several deposited materials, result in strong textures and anisotropy. As a solution, we study the plastic deformation effects of ultrasonic needle peening (UNP) on the microstructure. UNP treated materials deform plastically and the dislocation density increases. Fine α+α' grains with low aspect ratio are observed in the UNP treated specimens. UNP treated WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys have higher strength and lower elongation than those characteristics of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Due to UNP treatment, the z-axis directional specimens exhibit a greater effect of reducing elongation than do the x-axis directional specimens. The UNP treatment produces fine grains in proportion to the number of times UNP is performed, thereby increasing strength. UNP processes produce a large number of dislocations in the WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys, with the most dislocations being formed at the surface.
Red pepper calyx cutting devices using a impacting force by a rotational cutter were devised and tested to obtain the fundamental data for development of a calyx removal unit. Fresh red peppers with 80∼87%(w.b.) of initial moisture contents were used as experimental materials. Square and wire type of rotational cutters were used to cut the red pepper calyx and the fresh red peppers were fed into the device both manually and automatically. Three rotational speeds of 250, 500, 700rpm were selected for a square, and 1000, 1500, 1800rpm for a wire type cutter respectively. Four types of red pepper fixing unit were used in manual feeding. The cutting rate of the square type cutter was over 50% regardless the shape and specification of the cutter. For the wire type cutter, the copper wire and nylon chord could not be applied to cut the red pepper calyx because of the low cutting rate. But for the fine wire, the cutting rate was higher and the cutting mechanism was more steady than copper wire and nylon chord. The cutting rate of automatic feeding and wire type cutting unit was about 70% for all levels of the rotational speed. The cutting rate was highly related to the impacting point of red pepper in carrier box. To increase the cutting rate using the rotational cutter, a proper device and mechanism was required to keep the impacting point consistently.
Recent researches on nanofluids have mainly focused on the increase of thermal conductivity of nanofluids under static condition. The ultimate goal of using nanofluids, however, is to enhance the heat transfer performance under fluid flow. So it has been highly necessary to devise a simple and accurate measuring apparatus which effectively compares the heat transfer capability between the base and nanofluids. Though the convective heat transfer coefficient is not the complete index for the heat transfer capability, it might be one of useful indications of heat transfer enhancement. In this article, the working principles of experimental system for convective heat transfer coefficient around a heated fine wire in cross flow of nanofluids and its application example to three samples of nano lubrication oils are explained in detail.
A new relative motion control methodology for a following system to an independent leading system is proposed for controlling relative position, velocity, and tension etc. It is based on maintaining minimum relative error between two independent systems. The control command of the following system to a leading system is generated by adding the current command and the output of the relative error compensation. The proposed control method is implemented on the experimental equipment which is a wire winding-unwinding system to control the tension of the line. The results show the unwinding system(follower) following the independent motion of the winding system(leader) to control the constant tension of the line in order to keep the roller dancer in reference position. The relative motion control method proposed in this paper can be applied to high precision equipment for unwinding and winding fine wire, fine fiber, and tape etc.
Punching tools like an electrodes are made by milling or etching or EDM. These methods had time consuming, low efficiency and air pollution. So, we have developed a shearing device which counter punching method for burrless cutting of micro wire. Using the straightened SUS304 wire with $200{\mu}m$ diameter, we confirmed the tendency of the shear plane for punch tools. It was impossible to completely remove the bun in the shearing process. In order to minimize the burr size and fine shear plane, we have accomplished the various experiment conditions such as the U-groove, the effect of the counter punch, shear angle and clearance. The results of the experiments show that indentation, slip plane and bent shape were related to the shear angle and clearance.
Micro-wire made from straightening process invents high added value and it has been adopted many industrial fields. Therefore, many research activities about straightening process are advanced actively. It is known that fine straightness of micro-wire can be obtained by removing residual stress induced during the manufacturing processes. Generally, residual stress is removed or minimized through several drawing processes with heat treatment. In this study, the residual stress at each straightening process is calculated and monitored by finite element analyses and the main reason of stress change is investigated.

As the martensite structure cause fracture failure during drawing from 5.5mm rod to 3.05mm dia. wire without additional heat treatment, the optium cooling condition to inhibit the occurrence of martensite was investigated. In order to get SAE9254+V quality, the effects of alloying element, vanadium on the mechanical properties were investigated. Based upon CCT and TTT curves and the results form cooling test in mill, optimun cooling was found in the condition of the laying head temp of 780$^{\circ}C$ and of the conveyor speed at 0.15m/sec with the whole cover closed. The wire rods produced under the condition showed the best mechanical properties of 120kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in TS and 50% in RA, having an excellent drawability. In vanadium added steels, tensile strength was improved without degrading elongation and charpy impact value. That means the strengthening by vanadium is mainly due to the grain refinement by the fine precipitates during tempering process.
A new design of contact detection algorithm is proposed for the z-axis of a wire bonder that interconnects between pads and leads in semiconductor manufacturing processes. Fast and stable contact detection of the z-axis is extremely important fer maintaining proper quality in the fine pitch gold wire bonding process, which has a small pad size of below 70um. The new method is based on a statistical approach and designed for the discrete Kalman filter. Real wire bonding experimental results are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm.
Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is one of the unconventional machining processes, which is utilizing electrical energy to remove work-piece. In recent years WEDM used widely in die-sinking industry because WEDM can machine any hard materials if only it has conductivity and can machine accurately to the complex geometry, for fine wire is used in WEDM for the tool electrode. However WEDM is non-contact machining process, which is utilizing discharge phenomena occurring between two electrodes, the size of the machined part is larger than that of the tool electrode size. It is called discharge gap or clearance the difference size between the tool electrode and the machined part in WEDM. By the experiment clearances according to the machining condition was investigated.
