Analysis of Changes in Power Generation of Each Power Generation Company by the Fine-Dust Seasonal Management System (미세먼지 계절관리제로 인한 발전사별 전력생산량 변화 분석)

  • The fine-dust season management system refers to the policy of implementing enhanced reduction measures in transportation, power, business and living sectors in winter, when fine dust levels are high. The fine dust season management system is a regulatory policy that causes social costs and transfers to various economic players. Equity is an important issue for the cost burden. Therefore, in this study, the cost of each power generator was analyzed using the coal power generation reduction amount of each power generator to verify that the cost of the power sector is evenly distributed. In particular, the effect of the fine dust season management system on coal power generation of power generators was analyzed by applying a synthetic control method that can identify the time-variable effect of the policy. It was confirmed that the fine dust season management system reduced volume of fuel and power generation in coal power plants, resulting in an increase in the cost of the power generation sector, even considering the effect of some power demand due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, it could be seen that these costs were not distributed equally among the generators, and that they were more costly to the specific generators.Social costs incurred by fine dust season management need to be improved so that stakeholders are equally burdened.

Electric Collection Filter for Ultrafine Dust Removal (초미세먼지 제거를 위한 전기집진 필터에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, indoor air pollution has become a crucial environmental problem. Hence, the purification of indoor air is an important issue. Typical physical filters show relatively high dust collection efficiency at a dust particle size of more than 5.0 ㎛ but extremely low efficiency at an ultrafine size of less than 2.5 ㎛. In this study, an electric field filter was proposed to capture ultrafine dust with a size of less than 5.0 ㎛. Simulation results showed that the electric field filter effectively removed ultrafine dust. In addition, sufficient dust collection efficiency was obtained even with a simple plate-shaped filter without bending the Chevron filter.

The Study of Scattering Dust and Radiation Dose in Pedestrian Tunnels in Metropolitan Area (수도권 보행터널 내부에 존재하는 비산 먼지와 방사선량의 연구)

  • In the present, external environmental factors affect human health. In particular, the most important issue is fine dust in these days. Because fine dust is inhaled through the human respiratory system is known to be harmful to health. Tunnels for cars and people can also be easily seen around us. This study, the amount of scattering radiation was measured for walkable tunnels about dust. For the measurement method, dust and radiation dose in the tunnel were measured on good weather (fine dust level: 0 ~ 30 ㎍/㎥) and normal day (fine dust level: 0 ~ 80 ㎍/㎥). The measurement resulted in an increase of 10~20 % of dust in the center of the tunnel on a good weather day and an increase of 20~30 % of dust in the center of the tunnel on normal weather. On the other hand, the results of tunnel measurement of radiation dose increased by 10~20 % at the center of the tunnel non-depending on the weather. As a result, pedestrians should pay attention to scattering dust and scattered radiation while moving through the tunnel. Therefore, it is recommended to wear a filter mask of PM2.5 or less during frequent tunnel walking.

  • With the rapid progress of industrialization, indoor air quality is a very important factor for modern people who spend most of their day indoors. The recent issue of fine dust and radon on the portal site's popularity search shows that interest in indoor air quality has increased. Fine dust causes respiratory diseases, and radon causes severe lung cancer. The new material was tested using plant activated carbon, palm activated carbon and bamboo activated carbon. Both palm activated carbon and bamboo activated carbon are porous materials and generate smooth physical adsorption. As a result of the experiment, both the activated carbon tends to gradually decrease in strength and fluidity as the replacement ratio increases. The reason for this is that both activated carbons have the property of absorbing moisture, so it is judged that the strength is lowered by absorbing moisture necessary for curing. In the case of fluidity, it is judged that the fluidity is reduced by absorbing the moisture required for the flow. In the future, if the problem of the color of the finished cured body is compensated, it will be possible to manufacture a functional finishing board to replace the existing interior finishing material.

Effects of Community-Based SSI Programs on Promoting Middle School Students' Understanding of Issues and Character and Values as Citizens: Focused on Fine Dust Issues (지역사회연계 미세먼지 교육프로그램이 중학생들의 이슈에 대한 이해와 시민으로서의 인성과 가치관 함양에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of community-based SSI programs (SSI-COMM) regarding "fine dust" on promoting middle school students' understanding of community issues and their character and values as citizens. SSI-COMM on fine dust was implemented in 4 middle schools located in Seoul, and 151 7th graders participated in the program lasting over 8 weeks. Data was collected through two questionnaires (i.e. students' understanding of issues, and character and values as citizens) and individual interviews with selected students. Results indicated that there were statistically significant increases in their understanding of fine dust issue after the program. In addition, the program significantly contributed to enhancing students' character and values, especially in the domains of social and moral compassion and socioscientific accountability. Student interviews revealed that they became more aware of the local community problems caused by fine dusts and started to consider what efforts should be made to solve them. They also felt individual responsibility for the occurrence of fine dust, and the need for participation and practice of community activities for vulnerable groups in affected areas.

A Case Study on the Features of General Citizen's Scientific Participation and Action: Focus on the Case of Responding to Fine Dust Issue (일반 시민의 과학적 참여와 실천 사례 연구: 미세먼지 문제 대응 활동을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate qualitatively two cases of general citizens' scientific participation and activities responding to fine dust problem. The processes of their scientific actions were investigated and categorized inductively based on three stages: problem recognition stage, information collection and analysis stage, and sharing and spreading stage. As a result, in the 'problem recognition' stage, two participants recognized the seriousness of the fine dust problem as they felt a threat to their health and began to act practically by questioning the accuracy of public data. In the 'information collection and analysis' stage, a participant collected as much information as possible and compared them in order to obtain more accurate information for her situation. On the other hand, another participant conducted various experiments in person to get the information which is appropriate to his situation. Finally, in the 'Sharing and Spreading' stage, both participants created and shared various materials based on online environment, and continued their activities with a sense of contribution through others assistance. Educational implications are discussed in terms of civic science education and scientific literacy.

  • Air pollution has become a social issue. Particularly, interest in fine dust is increasing. Various kinds of sensors are being used to measure fine dust. The most commonly used infrared detection dust sensors operate by sensing the diffraction of light through an infrared receiver and sensing the light reflected by the dust in the air. However, this method has a drawback in which accurate data analysis is difficult due to deviation caused by the noise during measurement. In order to overcome such drawbacks, in this thesis, a low pass filter algorithm of FIR(Finite Impulse Response) filter was designed and implemented.

Filtration Characteristics of Paticulate Matter at Bag Filters Coated with PTFE Membrane During Off-Line Pulsing (PTFE membrane이 코팅된 여과백의 off-line 탈진시 미세먼지 집진 특성)

  • Particulate matter becomes an important issue in the environmental society recently so that it is necessary to evaluate that the commercial application of baghouse systems for effective control of fine particulates is viable. A laboratory-scale baghouse experimental apparatus with filter bags made of PTFE felt or PTFE felt coated with PTFE membrane is used to investigate the filtration performances of fine particulates. Experiments by changing filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, and average dust particle size show that the dust collection efficiency becomes higher at lower filtration velocity, higher inlet dust concentration and larger average dust particle size. The total pressure drop through the filter media and dust layer becomes higher at higher filtration velocity and higher inlet dust concentration. The dust collection efficiency is higher and the pressure drop is lower at a baghouse with filter bags coated with PTFE membrane than that without membrane coating. From the result that the dust collection efficiency of $PM_{2.5}$ in a reasonable filtration velocity range during off-line pulsing at a baghouse with PTFE felt bag filters coated with PTFE membrane is as high as 99.99%, it is confirmed that the use of baghouse is an effective measure to control the fine particulates.

The Effect of STEAM Program using Arduino on Preservice Science Teachers' STEAM Core Competencies (아두이노를 활용한 STEAM 프로그램이 예비 과학교사의 융합인재 핵심역량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study explores the effects of STEAM program using Arduino on preservice science teachers toward their STEAM core competencies. The STEAM program using Arduino consists of four stages: presentation of situation, creative design, emotional touch, and evaluation. The preservice science teachers learned the theoretical backgrounds of STEAM and Arduino. Then, they were given the chance to think about an environmental issue, which is fine dust. The preservice teachers designed an air cleaner and a fine dust measuring instrument using Arduino. The preservice science teachers also produced the air cleaner and the measuring instrument using Arduino. They measured the level of fine dust in the classroom before and after the use of the air cleaner. That is, the preservice teachers experienced each stage of STEAM: seriousness of fine dust, design and production of the measuring instrument of fine dust and air cleaner, and evaluation of the effectiveness of air cleaner. Further, they reflected on their experiences of STEAM program using Arduino. The results indicate that these preservice science teachers statistically improved communication competency, problem-solving competency, gathering information competency, logical analytical thinking competency, and creativity competency. However, there were no statistical improvements on teamwork competency and self-development competency. This study suggests that experiencing STEAM program using Arduino is valuable for the preservice science teachers to develop STEAM core competencies and further implement STEAM program their science classes in the future.

  • According with annual report by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), South Korea is at the top of the list of countries with bad air pollution (fine dust particles) and the South Korean government announced the cause to be due to the particle emissions of large and old diesel vehicles. To solve this issue, the government (jointly with related ministries), promoted the "Special Measures for Comprehensive Fine Dust Management Program" as a way to improve environmental pollution by reducing the overall output of fine dust particles emitted by public vehicles. The measure implemented a gas subsidy system to convert eco-friendly vehicles of city and chartered buses throughout the country. In this study, we take a look at the economical evaluation, comparison and analysis of the conversion of diesel vehicles to natural gas (CNG) vehicles. This report represent the basis for the need to expand the funds of the subsidy program and reviews the feasibility of the policy by taking into consideration the social and economical benefits and the effect in the environment when converting diesel fuel to natural gas vehicles through the type-specific fuel conversion scenarios.
