After $SnO_2$ fine powder by precipitation method, Ca as crystallization inhibitor and Pd as catalyst were added to $SnO_2$ raw material by various methods. Thick film device was fabricated on the alumina substrate by mixing ethylene glycol and such mixed powders. The sensing characteristics of the device for methane gas were investigated. The most excellent gas sensing property was shown by the thick film device fabricated by Method 3 in which Ca and Pd doped $SnO_2$ powder is prepared by mixing $SnO_2$ powder, 0.1 wt% Ca acetate and 1 wt% $PdCl_2$ in deionized water and by calcining the mixture, after $Sn(OH)_4$ is dried at $110^{\circ}C$ for 36h. The sensitivity of the sensor fabricated with $SnO_2$-0.1 wt%Ca acetate-1wt%$PdCl_2$ powder heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h was about 86% for 5,000 ppm methane in air at $350^{\circ}C$ of the operating temperature. Response time and recovery were also excellent.

Recently, Japan has showed strong demand for protection of consumers against misleading specification provided by producers, establishing the committee for JIS and ISO. To protect domestic market and overcome potential subordinate relationship in overseas market, several universities and institutes in Korea have performed collaborative works on the standardization of test method f3r photocatalytic activity concerning the selected application fields. This article deals with the process and the result for the method of testing photocatalytic sol or suspended powder using optical fiber. Currently, this method is Intended for TiO2, but can be applied for various photocatalytic raw materials that can be activated by visible light and solar irradiation.
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thick films with a thickness of $10-20{\mu}m$ were fabricated on silicone substrates using an aerosol deposition method. The starting powder, which had diameters of $1-2{\mu}m$, was observed using SEM. The average diameter ($d_{50}$) was $1.1{\mu}m$. An XRD analysis showed a typical perovskite structure, a mixture of the tetragonal phase and rhombohedral phase. The as-deposited film with nano-sized grains had a fairly dense microstructure without any cracks. The deposited film showed a mixture of an amorphous phase and a very fine crystalline phase by diffraction pattern analysis using TEM. The as-deposited films on silicon were annealed at a temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. A 20-${\mu}m$ thick PZT film was torn out as a result of the high compressive stress between the PZT film and substrate.
Condensed ethyl silicate(CES) solutions were prepared from $SiCl_4$ and ethanol which is different in water content(2.5, 5.0 and 7.0wt.% ). To investigate the sol-gel transition behaviors of CES and PHT(partially hydrolyzed TEOS) solutions, the measurement of volume change, density, $SiO_2$ content, intrinsic viscosity and number average molecular weight were conducted with elapsed time. The polymer shapes of CES were discussed from the relation between the intrinsic viscosity[$\eta$] and the number average molecular weight($\bar{Mn}$). CES-3 prepared from ethanol containing 7.0wt.% $H_2O$ had different sol-gel transition behaviors from CES-1 (2.5wt.% $H_2O$) and CES-2(5.Owt.% $H_2O$), but similar behaviors to those of PHT which is used for controlling the hydrolysis rata of TEOS when composite ceramic materials were manufactured from silicon alkoxides. On the basis of Mark-Hawink relation, $[{\eta}]=K\bar{Mn}^{{\alpha}}$, the polymer shape of CES solutions were determined linear siloxane polymers because all solutions had ${\alpha}$ values in the range from 0.53 to 0.84. Especially, CES-3 showed to be a favorable raw materials for composite ceramics due to its similar properties to those of PHT.
The needs for the ultra fine particles have been increased in preparation field of raw powders such as fine ceramics and high functional products. In this study, a series of wet grinding experiments were carried out on inorganic powders such as calcite, pyrophyllite and talc by a stirred ball mill. The particle size distribution of ground products of each test material fur a given grinding time was found to be expressed by the grinding rate (selection function) which was obtained from the grinding kinetics analysis. The median diameter decreased from 6.49 to $0.47{\mu}m$ in calcite, and decreased from 3.91 to $1.14{\mu}m$ in pyrophyllite. However, in talc, median diameter was decreased a little bit from 10.30 to $6.67{\mu}m$. The grinding rate changing on calcite and pyriphyllite were similar at the same conditions. However, in the case of talc, it was observed that the grinding rate was not increased compared to other samples.

Abstract The increasing application of $Al_2$,$O_3$ and related ceramics as engineering materials is because of their attractive properties of fine ceramics. One solution to the wide variety of ceramic to metal combination lies in the effective joining. Active metal brazing of $Al_2$,$O_3$, to STS304 was investigated using Cu -Ti alloys. Titanium additive is chosen since it is good oxide former~. Brazing is performed under vacuum($10^{-3}$-$10^{-4}$ torr), a temperature between 1100 and 120$0^{\circ}C$ and time of 0.5-1.5hr. The microstructure of the brazed joints of $Al_2$,$O_3$ to STS304 with Cu-Ti insert metals were examined by using optical microscope and SEM and reaction products were analyzed by using EDX, WDX and XRD. Also interfacial reactions occuring during the brazing of $Al_2$,$O_3$/Cu-Ti/STS304 system are discussed. Experimental results showed formation of Titanium oxide T$i_2$$O_3$ which is attributable to the joining $Al_2$,$O_3$ to STS304 with Cu-Ti insert metal.

Phase evolution, microstructure and the electrical properties such as $k_p$ and $Q_m$ of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3[PMN]-Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O3[PM'N]-PbZrO_3[PZ]-PbTiO_3[PT]$ quaternary system were investigated within the compositional ranges $0{\leq}y{\leq}0.125$, y+z=0.125, and $0.39{\leq}x{\leq}0.54$ of the formula $Pb_{0.97}Sr_{0.03}[Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_y\;(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_z\;(Zr_{x}Ti_{1-x})_{1-(y+z)}]O_3$. In the case of increasing Mn/(Mg+Mn) ratio for a fixed Zr/Ti ratio of 47.5/52.5, phase relation remained unchanged but the grain size drastically decreased, and the electrical properties changed as following: both $k_P$ and $Q_m$ reached the peak values at $Mn/(Mg+Mn)\cong0.3l7$ and gradually decreased; $\varepsilon33^T$ showed a monotonic decrease; P-E hysteresis loop gradually changed to asymmetrical one, and $E_i$ increased in correspondence. With increasing Zr/Ti ratio for a fixed Mn/(Mg+Mn) ratio of 0.317, on the contrary, the cell parameter $(\alpha^2c)^{1/3}$ gradually increased, and tetragonal-rhombohedral morphotropic phase boundary appeared in the range of $51/49{\leq}Zr/Ti{\leq}54/46$. the meantime, the grain size substantially increased, and the electrical properties changed as following: $k_P$ and $\varepsilon33^T$ reached peak values at Zr/Ti=51/49 and 48/52, respectively, and then gradually decreased; change of $Q_m$ was adverse to $k_P$; both $E_C\;and\;E_i$ considerably decreased while $P_S$ moderately increased. For the system 0.125(PMN+PM'N)-0.875PZT studied, the composition Mn/(Mg+Mn)=0.3l7 and Zr/Ti=51/49 revealed some promising electrical properties for piezoelectric transformer application such as $k_P=0.58,\;Q_m\cong1000$, and $\varepsilon^T_{33}=970$, as well as dense and fine-grained microstructure.

A porous ceramic which has fine porosity and small specific gravity is made with Cenosphere and Ball Clay under condition of $1,250^{\circ}C$ in calcination temperature and 30 minutes of calcination time. The average size of porous ceramic was about $2.5{\times}10^{-5}$ m and pores are well developed. The void-fraction of porous ceramic was 67.1% under the input of Cenosphere and Ball clay with the weight ratio of 100 to 5. However, as weight ratio of Ball Clay increased to 20, 40, 100, the void fraction decreased to 58.4, 56.7, 47% respectively. When the weight ratio of Cenosphere and Ball Clay was 100 to 100, the apparent density of porous ceramic was $1.04g/cm^3$. which is twice the density when the weight ratio of Ball Clay was 5. On the other hand, absorption rate decreased by at least 100%. In condition of weight ratio of Cenosphere and Ball Clay was 100 to 100, compressive strength of porous ceramic was 30 (MPa), improve by about 76% or more when the weight ratio of Ball Clay was 5.
In preparing PSZT powder by hydrothermal synthesis, effects of reaction temperature, concentration of raw materials and mineralizer on crystallinity, particle size distribution, and dielectric constant were investigated. By varying the concentration of mineralizer and the ratio of Pb to Sr or Zr to Ti, crystalline PSZT powder, having the mean particle size of $0.3{\sim}15{\mu}m$, was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis in the temperature range of $120{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ for a 2h reaction. PSZT ceramics, having dielectric constant of 1000~3000, were prepared at $1150^{\circ}C$ for a 2h sintering reaction of the PSZT powders. Experimental results showed that the weight mean particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ was obtained when the concentration of KOH in the solution was 10 wt % and the ratio of Pb to Sr was 0.95/0.05, that of Zr to Ti was 0.52/0.48. It also showed that the ceramics of dielectric constant of 2900 were prepared through sintering of this PSZT powder. Size of PSZT particles became smaller with its narrow distribution as the concentration of KOH increased up to 10 wt %. However, it came to be larger at this concentration and above. By adding small amount of Sr that would not affect that crystallinity of particles we can improve dielectric property of sintered materials. Addition of Zr may shift the major crystal phase of synthetic PSZT powder from tetragonal to rhombohedral phase.

Hexacelsian ($BaO{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$) powder was prepared by a solution-polymerization route employing PVA solution as a polymeric carrier. A fine amorphous-type hexacelsian powder with an average particle size of 0.8 $\mu \textrm{m}$ and a BET specific surface area of $63 \textrm{m}^2$/g was made by a ball-milling the powder precursor for 12 h after calcination at $800^{\circ}C$ for :1 h. A densified hexacelsian was obtained through sintering at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an air atmosphere. The $\alpha\longleftrightarrow\beta$ and $\beta\longleftrightarrow\gamma$ displacive phase transformation in polycrystalline hexacelsia,n was examined by using dilatometry and differential scanning calorimtry. The reconstructive transformation between hexacelsian and celsian was obtained by annealing at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 72h. Volume contraction of 5.6% was accompanied by the reconstructive transformation.
